How to choose the most suitable style?
Before creating a pattern for a summer dress or sundress, choose the most suitable style, taking into account:
- features of the figure;
- desired outfit silhouette;
- material used.
For example, thin girls can afford to wear almost any dress: tight-fitting and loose-fitting, regardless of the degree of stiffness of the fabric. In this case, when making patterns, add a few centimeters to the circumference of the hips and chest, especially if you are using hard material. Thanks to these tricks, the dress will turn out to be quite loose, and the skirt will emphasize fragility and slimness.
For those with curvy figures, it is better to sew items from stiff fabric that does not drape well, and choose outfits of a close-fitting style. If you add too much stiff fabric at the hips, the dress will look baggy and add even more volume. Such increases can only be made using thin fabric that drapes well. Long dresses with a little flare at the bottom look great.
Girls with pronounced shapes - large breasts and convex buttocks - can safely sew fitted knitted dresses. Such a product will be able to “sit down” correctly, emphasizing the beauty of its shape.
We will sew our summer sundress from chiffon . If you have skirt and you don’t wear it, it will be quite suitable for our sundress. If there is no suitable skirt, then simply cut out a semi-sun skirt. In this case, we build the top line not according to the size of the waist circumference, but take the circumference under the chest, because We will sew the skirt under the bust. You can even add spacing for easy assembly. We emphasize the waist with a wide fabric belt like on the top. This way you won’t look like a ball, but you will get a very beautiful sundress .
First
, take measurements and create a pattern . On the finished pattern, measure the distance from the chest line to the line under the chest. Leave a notch on the front of the pattern. We measure the resulting distance from the waist to the line under the chest. We put exactly the same distance from the waist on the back. Trim off the excess bottom part. Outline the pattern on the fabric.
For the top we took beige chiffon crepe. Our skirt is made of milky chiffon, it is very transparent. Therefore, under the bottom of the top layer we will make two more skirts from cream chiffon. Having previously applied two and three layers of skirts, we settled on three layers of skirt. Next we cut out the straps. We will need strips 35 cm long and 5 cm wide.
We duplicate them with doubler. Iron it well. Place right sides together and stitch along the edges. We got “sausages”.
We insert a long strong thread into the needle. We fix it at one edge, sewing it a little. We insert the needle through the entire strap from the inside and pull the needle.
The strap turned out.
We smooth it so that the seam is not visible from the front side. It can be on the other side in the center or remain as a side seam on the fold.
We need two top patterns.
Since the top will be double, all the seams will be hidden between the two layers. We duplicate the top layer of the top. We create the desired neckline on the chest.
We make all the drawn relief grooves.
When sewing the cutout on the front, do not forget to insert our straps into the seam. Before assembling the parts, you can try them on the model and mark the place of the straps. The same goes for the back.
Sew together the front and back of the top on the sides. On the left side we will have a hidden zipper, so on this side we sew the seam from the top only 4-5 cm.
We sew all three parts of the skirt along the line of connection with the top and pull the skirt together to create a gather.
Mark reference centers to evenly distribute the fabric along the seam.
Sew on the top layer of the skirt from the beginning. Then the next two in turn. We do not add the last one to the side zipper by 5 cm. We will add it after sewing on the zipper.
Sew in the side zipper. From the beginning one side. We're trying to close it. Mark the butt seam on the fabric. Then sew on the second part of the zipper. We check that our zipper is fastened well.
Sew the bottom layer of the skirt so that the seam is hidden between the two petticoats. We complete the bottom layer of the skirt closer to the zipper.
We also sew the inside of the top to the zipper so that the seam is between the two parts of the top, on the inside.
We close all our seams with the second part (inner) and sew from the front side of the dress so that the seam runs along the line where the top and skirt meet.
In the same way as we made the straps, we make the belt. You don’t need to duplicate it, so that when we tie it, it doesn’t stick out at the back. Belt length 1.9 m.
Turn it inside out and smooth it out.
To prevent the belt from moving, we fix it by sewing it along the line under the chest in front.
The sundress is ready. In it you will be irresistible and elegant both at the resort and in the city.

DIY summer dresses and sundresses: patterns
Necessary materials:
- pencil with ruler;
- tracing paper;
- centimeter;
- a thin piece of soap or chalk;
- scissors;
- textile;
- ribbon or beautiful rope;
- pins;
- paper or old wallpaper.
Dress pattern with drawstring:
- First you need to draw a regular rectangle. Its dimensions depend on the length of the outfit, as well as how fitted the dress is. The length of the back should match the front of the product.
- Then you need to sew the seams located on the sides, shaping the upper part of the product as a drawstring.
- All that remains is to insert a ribbon inside the drawstring, which will then be tied at the shoulder.
These simple patterns for summer dresses and sundresses can be used to create a fitted outfit. To do this, you need to take stretch fabric, since it fits tightly to the figure. If there is no such fabric, then you can fit the dress by bending the line of the side seams at the waist (in the photo this is indicated by a blue dotted line). In this case, you need to sew an invisible zipper near the waist.
Pattern for a summer drapery dress:
- First you need to cut a rectangle, the length of which can be more than two meters. In this case, you need to take into account your own dimensions, as well as the desired “thickness” of the folds. The height of the rectangle is affected by the planned length of the outfit.
- The dress has only one seam, located at the back.
- To create a neckline, you need to make a small incision in the very center (about 10 cm).
- The upper part of the fabric is decorated, as in the previous model, by pulling two ropes or ribbons into the drawstring. The ends of these ribbons need to be sewn in at the back, and at the front they should go to the very center. It turns out that when putting on a dress, you will tie them around your neck.
- You can use most of the ribbon as a belt, tying the dress just below the chest.
The main thing when creating this model is to choose the appropriate material. The fabric should form soft folds and also be thin enough. Knitwear, satin, several types of crepe, and silk have similar properties. It is enough to try the fabric to the touch: when it flows, forming folds, as if flowing, then you can safely buy it.
Pattern of a wide summer sundress:
- When sewing summer dresses and sundresses with your own hands, making patterns is very simple: you need to take a T-shirt of a suitable size and trace it on the back of old wallpaper. You can begin to draw your outfit around the resulting outline.
- If the left half is slightly different from the right, it doesn't matter. You can draw one half first, and to make both sides symmetrical, simply fold it in the middle.
- Those with large breasts or pregnant women should make the front part of the product a little longer, because it will ride up a little in the front, which will make the dress look unsightly. It's best to make the front longer and trim off the excess during fitting if the outfit will fit well.
- After drawing the pattern, you need to cut it out and transfer it to the fabric.
- The shoulder and side seams are first basted by hand for fitting: if the dress fits well, then you can sew them with a machine.
- It remains to process the armholes with the décolleté area. To do this, the edges are beautifully curved inward. You can purchase bias tape to finish the neckline.
You need to choose fabric for such an outfit according to the same principle as for the above-mentioned model. The material used must be thin enough. If you choose a fabric that is too stiff, you will get a trapezoidal sundress that will “stand up like a stake.”
Summer provides women with the opportunity to experiment with patterns and colors of their outfits, to be unique, bright and noticeable. And what dress will fit best if not sewn with your own hands? This outfit looks more flattering, because you will create a pattern taking into account your body shape. A properly tailored dress will not pull or press too much, or restrict movement, and you will be simply irresistible in it!
