What you need to shorten laces
To make them shorter, you can simply cut off the fittings and singe the ends with a lighter. But this will not look aesthetically pleasing, and the shoes will lose their presentable appearance.
Therefore, you should use more careful methods. For this you will need:
- cocktail straw. Ideally, a heat-shrinkable tube;
- matches or lighter. A hair dryer is also suitable;
- scissors;
- polyurethane glue;
- felt-tip pen;
- scotch.
Popular methods
Before you start shortening the fixing element, you need to measure the required length:
- shoes should be put on and secured so that the foot is as comfortable as possible;
- the fittings need to be marked. This can be done using a felt-tip pen. They need to draw lines on both ends of the clamp, marking the length that needs to be cut.
After this, you should choose the most convenient shortening option.
Simplest
The option is suitable for regular laces. They are found in sneakers and sneakers. You will need adhesive tape or tape for this. With this method, the ends of the fittings must be tightly wrapped with tape.
"Beautiful" way
This is the most accurate option. It requires scissors, straws and a lighter.
- laces must be cut according to the markings;
- Tips need to be made from straws. You should cut two pieces about 2 cm long;
- the ends of the fittings should be threaded into tubes;
- Using a lighter or match, the pieces of straw need to be heated. This must be done carefully so as not to spoil anything;
- When the plastic tips have cooled, the finished fittings can be put back in.
Important!
The ends of the laces can be additionally treated with polyurethane glue. This will protect them from moisture.
"Sticky Fingers"
For this option you will also need glue. In this case, superglue will not work, as it will quickly glue your fingers together. Apply a small amount of glue to the ends of the fittings and then give them a cone shape.
Giving the product the required length is quite simple. In addition to these methods, you can learn how to fix them beautifully. Some methods also make them shorter. If there is no time to shorten, then you can buy new fittings of the required length.
These shoes are made mainly of leather, but there are options made of suede and textile. The sole height of boat shoes can be very thin, or vice versa, quite thick.
Topsiders differ from other shoes in that they have a white sole and a mandatory lace at the top and edge around the entire circumference. The number of holes for the lace depends on the designer’s idea; there can be only 2 of them on each shoe, or maybe 6 of them.
It is the lace that distinguishes boat shoes from classic moccasins. To tie shoelaces on boat shoes
, you need to have a certain skill. Watch the video instructions and you will definitely learn how to do this. Unfortunately, all videos are in English. Apparently, in our country these shoes have not found such wide demand.
How to tie shoelaces with an original “lattice” pattern
- We pull the lace through the first two holes.
- We drag the right edge of the lace into the left fourth hole from the outside to the inside.
- Then we drag it into the fifth left hole from the inside.
- We do the same with the left edge of the lace.
- We shift the left edge of the lace to the right side under the other lace, pull it through the second right hole from the outside in, then into the third right hole from the inside out.
- We do the same with the other edge of the lace.
- We shift the left edge of the lace to the right side under the stitch closest to it and pull it through the last right hole from the inside out. We do the same with the other edge of the lace.

Knitting needle method
Sometimes the laces are too long. As a result, they dangle awkwardly and you step on them. The solution is to buy new, shorter ones. But if you need to shorten your shoelaces right away, then use the methods described below to save yourself.
Shortening laces is as easy as pie - take it and cut it with scissors. It’s more difficult to do it carefully so that it looks beautiful. But in this life nothing is impossible. Especially something that concerns such an earthly thing as shoelaces.
The easiest way
Works with regular laces (most often found in sneakers. Its essence: tightly wrap the end with transparent tape.
“Sticky fingers”
Another option is to soak the end of the lace with glue (but not superglue - your fingers will just stick together). Then give this tip a pointed shape.
The most beautiful option
The most beautiful option is to use thin metal tubes. They can be found in radio parts stores or flea markets. After sawing off the tube to the required length, insert a cord into it and pour glue inside, or make small dents with a nail. The result will differ from the factory one, but still. Another option is not to pour glue and make holes with a nail, but to cauterize the tube. See how it's done:
How to shorten a lace
Each of us has known since childhood how to properly tie laces on sneakers. But it often turns out that the reliability of a node is not as high as we would like. The laces get untied every now and then, especially during training or active sports. Stepping on the dangling end of a lace is not a pleasant event. Therefore, it will be useful for sports and outdoor enthusiasts to learn several reliable methods for lacing shoes.
Before moving on to lacing methods, let's look at the root of the problem. Why is the lacing of sneakers often unreliable? Even a tightly tied knot can unravel spontaneously.
, leaving behind a light trail of surprise. The cause may be the laces themselves, incorrect knots, carelessness of the wearer and many other factors.
The most common reasons for untying knots
are:
- The laces are made of silk or coated with wax (“waxed”)
. Such laces are quite slippery, and therefore most popular knots are simply unreliable. - The so-called “grandmother’s bow” is used
. It is this knot that is familiar to each of us from early childhood. Unfortunately, this is the most unreliable way to lace shoes. - Severe frost
. During frost, laces may lose elasticity and become noticeably harder. This will make them more slippery. As a result, the knot may unravel on its own. - Too short or, conversely, too long laces
. There is a whole system about what length of laces is needed for a particular number of holes. A lace of the wrong size risks unraveling on its own, even if the knot is made correctly and skillfully.
Important! With laces that slip or dangle loosely in the holes, it is better not to do anything at all. Just replace them with new high-quality laces, preferably made of cotton. After this, you can begin to study the types of lacing.
Simple ways to tie shoelaces
There are many ways to tie laces on sneakers and other shoes. All of them can be used for visual variety if you are tired of the same lacing.
Traditional way
The most famous method is used in many countries around the world, including for lacing children's shoes. Most parents ask the question: “How to tie laces on children's shoes?” The main purpose of lacing a child’s shoes is to ensure the comfort of the feet and avoid chafing of the laces when walking.
Tying steps:
- Insert the lace into the furthest holes, outward at both ends.
- Cross the two edges of the lace and push them through the next holes outward, just like the first time.
- Repeat until the last holes.
- Tie a strong bow at the end.
Lacing with knots
In its stages, this lacing is similar to the traditional method. The only difference is that the laces threaded through the holes do not simply cross, but are tied together, as at the initial stage of knot formation.
European way
The shoes lace up very quickly and tightly. The method is often used to tie laces on army boots:
- Thread the lace through the first bottom holes to the inside.
- Place the first lace crosswise into the second loop with the end up.
- Pass this end of the lace into the second loop opposite.
- Pass the second lace crosswise into the third loop with the end up.
- Thread the second lace into the third loop opposite.
- Thread the laces crosswise, skipping one row of holes to the top ones.
- Tie a strong bow from the ends of the lace.
How to properly lace your training shoes?
To understand how to tie the laces on sneakers, you can experiment. Through trial and error, you will quickly find the best option. But if you don’t want to spend time searching for a solution on your own, we bring to your attention information that has been verified by millions of sports shoe wearers!
Basic lacing methods
“Grandma’s bow”, as the simplest lacing method, is known to everyone. But its popularity is not evidence of effectiveness
. These knots get undone much more often than most others. Let's look at several basic methods of lacing sneakers and sneakers.
Australian Ian Figen's method
It turned out to be so simple and reliable that it brought its creator a lot of money.
Ayan now has a popular website dedicated to lacing techniques. As you can see in the figure, the essence of the method is to insert the loops into one another before creating the characteristic “bow”
, and not just tie them, as in the traditional unreliable method. However, there is no point in describing Figen’s method: it is better to learn from an image. By the way, it was taken from Ayan’s website, like the rest of the images in this article.
Rice. 1. Ian Figen's method
If you don't trust a stranger to tell you how to insert laces into your sneakers, here's another good way. Many people rightly consider it the perfect combination of simplicity and reliability
.
It can be described as a “ double bow
”, and it is called sliding because
after tying there is free space
. This is what makes the node reliable. If you tighten it tightly, it will come undone pretty quickly. As you can see from the image, making such a knot is not at all difficult!
Rice. 2. Double slip knot
Finally, we offer another popular method. This is the surgeon's knot
, otherwise called the “Sherpa knot”.
It is very difficult to do - even the image shows as many as 8 steps instead of 6. This method is the most difficult, but lacing the sneakers according to the photo will allow you to master it quite quickly. You just need to learn how to correctly wrap one loop around another
, and everything else will be a matter of technique. Believe me, it's worth it!
Rice. 3. Surgeon’s knot, or “Sherpa knot”
If the method you know is not among those listed above, this does not make it bad. There are many unpopular, but also effective types of lacing for sports shoes. Look for the one you like best.
Tricks when creating a node
To create a great knot, sometimes it is not enough to know some effective lacing technique. Laces can be slippery and therefore require additional means of “insurance”. Additionally, exertion during exercise increases the risk of loosening compared to normal walking. So, what tricks can you use to protect your shoelaces from unraveling spontaneously?
?
The main “insurance” means are:
- Hide the ends of the laces
. We will look at this issue in more detail at the end of the article. For now, let’s say that you need to hide even short ends, and not just excessively long ones. - Pay attention not only to the knot, but also to the lacing
. The more often the ends of the lace intersect and intertwine during the lacing process, the less likely it is that the sneaker will “loose” and thereby weaken the knot. - Experiment with knot strength
. If the laces come undone, try tightening the knot more or, conversely, loosening the knot. Sometimes this becomes the most effective solution to the problem. - Check the unit immediately before starting training
. During the time you walk from home to the training place, the knot may loosen a little, and tightening it before starting classes is the right decision.
How to tie your shoe laces beautifully with a jagged knot
- We pull the lace through the first two holes from the outside to the inside.
- We drag the right edge of the lace into the second right hole from the inside out, then into the second left hole from the outside in.
- Now we drag the lower left edge of the lace into the third right hole from the inside out.
- We stretch the same edge of the lace into the third left hole from the outside to the inside.
- Similarly, we drag both edges of the lace into the fourth holes.
- Same thing with the fifth holes.
- In this way we lace to the end and pull the edges of the laces from the inside out.
How to lace sneakers for children?
You've probably noticed that some lacing methods are quite complicated. The child most likely will not be able to cope with them.
. But at school there are regular physical education lessons, and children themselves are forced to change into sports shoes, tying their own laces. Bumps and bruises resulting from untied shoelaces during physical education are by no means uncommon.
What should a child do with unruly laces? There are several general recommendations:
- Don't teach your child complex knots
. The parents' best intentions are understandable, but if the child cannot properly master the chosen type of lacing, the knot will be made incorrectly and risks coming undone. The optimal option is the “golden mean” between simplicity and reliability of the unit. - Buy cotton laces for your child
. They provide the best grip and do not slip, so the risk of coming undone is quite low. With waxed or silk laces, things are much more complicated. - Take care of the optimal length
. Children's sneakers often use unreliable, slippery laces, but their length is always optimal. Therefore, new cotton laces should be the same size as the original ones.
Children's shoes themselves also play an important role. If the sneakers are very loose, then they are unlikely to be suitable for physical education lessons, even despite the reliable and high-quality knot.
What to do with the ends of the laces?
We've already talked a lot about how to lace your sneakers correctly. But even if the knot is made correctly, due to the non-ideal length of the laces, the ends often remain too long
. You also need to do something with them, because during training they can get caught on something or get under the sole.
The basic solution to the problem of long laces is to use the top eyelet correctly. You need to lace the sneakers so that the lace goes inside the top hole and does not come out. This will allow you to conveniently hide the loose edges inside the sneaker - either between the tongue and the walls of the shoe, or between the walls of the shoe and the foot.
If the previous advice was not enough, then there are other tricks
:
- you can make a knot not from above, but under the tongue (suitable only for loose shoes, otherwise it puts pressure on the foot);
- you can tie a “bow” not in the center, but on the side, and then tuck both ends on one side;
- if the laces are too long, you can tie them around your shin (suitable when wearing trousers and jeans);
- You can buy lace anchors - small plastic accessories created specifically for “cleaning up” the free edges of laces.
Materials and tools
The easiest way to make laces shorter at home is to trim off the excess with scissors and singe it with a lighter. The procedure takes a minimum of time, but has a significant drawback - the cut ends look ugly. In addition, over time they may begin to bloom. It is also worth considering that a fixing element processed in this way simplifies the appearance of the shoe and makes it less presentable. That is why it is better to use more careful methods to shorten laces. Depending on the method, to carry out the procedure you will need:
- drinking straw;
- matches or lighter;
- sharp scissors (not manicure scissors);
- high-quality polyurethane glue;
- marker with a thin rod;
- scotch.
Almost every one of these items can be found at home, making the procedure easier. If you have everything you need on hand and know how to shorten laces, the job will take a minimum of time. The product can be used for its intended purpose immediately after trimming.
Basic shortening methods
Before cutting the laces, you need to make sure that the measurements are taken correctly. It is worth understanding that it will not be possible to return the device to its original appearance. If a critical error is made, damaged products will need to be replaced with new ones. After checking the measurements again, you need to mark the fittings using a marker. They draw a line at both ends, marking the length that needs to be removed.
Simple
This is the easiest way to shorten shoelaces. It is guaranteed to be hassle-free and will take no more than 10 minutes. But the technique has a significant drawback - the retainer will not look very neat. This option is more suitable for ordinary laces that are inserted into sneakers or sneakers. All you need for the procedure is clear tape. Double-sided or colored tape is not suitable.
The essence of the technique is that the excess ends need to be folded to the required length and tightened tightly with tape. The tape will be securely attached to the material, thanks to which the lace will be fixed.
Tying the laces will be convenient, and they will also keep the shoes securely on your feet. Despite the simplicity and practicality of this method, it should be used only as a last resort. This is due to the fact that the appearance of the laces will not be ideal, due to which they will forgive the shoes.
"Sticky Fingers"
There is another effective method for cutting lace while maintaining its attractive appearance. Compared to the previous method, this procedure is more complex and painstaking, but gives a better result.
To shorten too long clamps using this method, you will need scissors and good polyurethane glue. You should not use superglue as it will dry too quickly. As a result, it will not be possible to shorten the laces, and in addition, there is a risk of completely ruining them. The polyurethane composition has a more suitable consistency and does not harden as quickly, so you need to use it.
All you need to do with the laces is mark the desired length, cut off the excess, leaving a margin of about 7-10 mm. Next, apply a drop of glue to the tip and give it a cone shape. During the procedure, light pressure should be applied to the material. The method is simple but effective. Its only drawback is that after work you will have to wash your fingers off the glue.
To avoid getting your hands dirty with glue, you can wear thin nitrile or rubber gloves.
Beautiful
Long laces usually have to be shortened by cutting. After that they don't always look neat. However, there is one option to remove excess length while maintaining the attractiveness of the ends. To work you will need scissors, a lighter and a drinking straw. Algorithm of actions:
- The laces must be cut according to the markings.
- 2 tips are made from the tube. To do this, cut 2 pieces about 1.5–2 cm long.
- The ends of the laces are carefully threaded into the tubes without going beyond the edges.
- Now you need to bring a lighter to the straw and gently heat it.
After heat treatment, the straw will tighten along the edges and take on a cone-shaped shape, due to which it will look very neat, reminiscent of a cap. Now the accessories can be put into shoes. It is advisable that the color of the straw matches the tone of the lace. If you want the retainer to look unusual and stylish, you can choose a contrasting color.
Each way to make shoelaces shorter has advantages and disadvantages. When choosing a method, you need to be guided only by your own preferences, and also take into account the type of shoes.
To simplify your work as much as possible and prevent errors, you should follow these recommendations:
- If shortening is carried out using glue, you can wear gloves on your hands. They will protect the skin from the sticky composition. Gloves are definitely needed for people who are allergic to household chemicals.
- If the procedure is carried out at home and requires the use of fire, have a fire extinguisher on hand.
In addition to the above methods, you can also shorten the laces using an alternative method. To do this, it is not necessary to cut the fastener, you just need to learn how to lace your shoes using a non-standard method. Many patterns will shorten the laces by half and at the same time give your sneakers or boots a creative look.

An easy way to wear pendants
I really love pendants with cabochons. Sometimes it happens that I embroider several pieces at once in a day, and then I sit and think about what to hang them on. Sometimes you come across such capricious stones that you have to rack your brains to figure out how to hang them in a more original way. On a gold or silver chain - it looks like a gypsy; knitting cords with beads is too cumbersome and can distract from the beauty of the stone. Especially for such things that do not fit into the usual framework, I use cord hangers. They are made very simply, even a novice needlewoman can cope with it the first time
To make such a lace, both waxed cord with a diameter of 1-2 mm and simple nylon knitted laces of similar thickness are suitable. You will also need a nylon transparent ribbon with a width of 4-6 mm (for a special chic, you can, of course, use satin ribbons of the same width). In accordance with the main color, we also choose fittings - for warm tones, gold, for cold tones, silver. For accessories, you need to purchase ribbon clips, several detachable rings, a carabiner lock and a 5-6 cm long chain to adjust the length of the lace. Tools include pliers or narrow nose pliers and scissors.
We measure the required length from the nylon tape. Usually it is 43-50 cm, but it is better to measure the length in advance, hang the finished pendant on a ribbon and show off in front of the mirror. From the bobbin with cord, measure 4 lengths of ribbon. So if its length is 44 cm, then we measure 176 cm of lace. Fold the cord in half and in half again, making 4 rows. We combine the ends together with the tape and put them into the clip
Use pliers to carefully bend one side of the mold, carefully pressing the metal
Repeat similarly with the second half of the clamp. Make sure it fits snugly on the lace
We do the same with the second end. Now you need to connect the lock and chain. We spread the split ring apart. We do not stretch it under any circumstances, the movement should only be perpendicular to the ring
We thread the open ring into the loop of the clip and carabiner
And clamp it with pliers. On the other side we insert a ring with a chain
Our cord is ready, you can hang a pendant of a suitable style and color on it

So that's why these clamps are needed. We sell them in our store, but no one knows how to properly use clips for laces and ribbons.

Ollie You can do it, only then it will turn out that half of the laces will stick out in different directions. Or should I braid it?
