DIY dragonfly costume from scrap material

The bright and glamorous costume of the Dragonfly personifies the graceful inhabitant of fresh water bodies, forests and meadows, which attracts the eye as it flies from flower to flower. You can see this insect in different colors: yellow, blue, light green, turquoise, purple, orange, as well as with brilliant tints of all shades of the rainbow. The large bulging eyes of the dragonfly simply attract with their mosaic look. This amazing creation of nature gives many ideas for creative flight in creating a carnival costume.

As the basis for the costume, you can take a soft blue dress with translucent organza flounces, or a turquoise blouse with pants made of light fabric. Perhaps the second option would be even preferable, since it better represents the graceful, slender abdomen of the insect.

Accessories: glasses, wings, magic wand for a DIY Dragonfly costume

Glasses for Dragonfly costume

Mandatory details of the dragonfly costume will be four narrow elongated wings and large round glasses with convex lenses that will display the insect’s huge eyes. Such glasses, in the style of the 70s, can be easily found at the market or in a store, or perhaps they were preserved in your grandmother's jewelry box.

But try making the wings yourself from available materials.

DIY wings for the New Year's Dragonfly costume

The process of making Dragonfly wings is similar to Butterfly wings. The difference is in the cheapness and originality of the material used. We will make dragonfly wings from wire and... garbage bags. But first things first.

The main thing is to get a piece of aluminum wire 3.5 m long or a piece of unnecessary single-core electrical wire in a plastic braid.

Bend this wire so that you get long, elongated wings attached to a narrow abdomen (2 on each side).

Now you need to tighten the wings. To do this, you don’t need to buy expensive fabric; buy 5 blue garbage bags with a volume of approximately 35 liters. Wrap the four bags around the wings, securing the plastic tape on the back side. Wrap the fifth bag around the central axis – the abdomen, also securing the bag at the end with tape.

Character: The dragonfly jumper is a representative of insects, characterized by a cheerful character and carefree nature.

Costume: The dragonfly is dressed in a green-blue jumpsuit with wings, and on its head there are glasses that imitate the large bulging eyes of a dragonfly. The overalls are made of fabric of two colors - blue and green. To do this, redraw the pattern from Fig. “Drawing of a Dragonfly costume” and transfer it to fabric. Cut the right side from blue fabric, and the left from green, not forgetting to add seam allowances - 1 cm on each side. Along the lines marked in the drawing, sew a regular underwear elastic on the wrong side, stretching it so that when free, the elastic tightens the fabric. Sew the middle seam of the overalls and overcast. Sew the instep seams of the overalls and overcast them. Fold the top edge of the overalls at a distance sufficient to thread the elastic through. Thread the elastic band. Fold the bottom of the overalls. Sew a 25 cm long strip of Velcro (the fuzzy half of the Velcro) onto the back middle seam.

Drawing of the Dragonfly costume Cut out a strip of blue fabric 40 cm long and 8 cm wide. Fold the strip lengthwise with the face inward and stitch along the edge, leaving a hole for turning it out. Turn the strap right side out and iron. Make a strap from green fabric in the same way. Sew the straps onto the back of the jumpsuit. Sew two buttons onto the front of the overalls, and work on the loops on the straps, having previously adjusted the length of the straps on the child. You can use buttons or Velcro as a fastener. The wings are made of wire and translucent fabric (nylon, chiffon, organza, etc.). Draw a pattern for the wings and bend the wire along the drawn contour. Cut wings from the fabric, adding 1 cm along the edge for seam allowances. Sew the fabric to the wire frame by hand or on a machine using a fine zigzag stitch. Sew a strip of Velcro 25 cm long onto the center of the wings from the back side. On the front side, in the center of the wings, sew a strip of fabric 3 cm wide and 27 cm long in order to hide the seams and sections of fabric underneath. You can decorate the wings with beads, glass beads, or paint them. Dragonfly eye glasses can be made from tea strainers. To do this, it is necessary to remove all excess from two strainers in the form of fasteners for a kettle, etc. and fasten them together with thin wire or thread. Thread a hat elastic into the outer holes and adjust it to the size of your head. There is another option for “marking” the eyes: wear large translucent sunglasses, and we are sure that this cute insect will not go unnoticed at the carnival.

Making a fly costume

Decide on the style and color scheme. The base will be black, it can be complemented by white, silver, brown or gold.

Option with a full skirt

A fluffy skirt looks more elegant than a straight one, and decorations (bows, colored inserts) will add playfulness and childlike spontaneity to the image.

An interesting and quick-to-make set will be made with a tulle skirt. It can be worn over regular clothes.

Materials:

  • Tulle is black and golden or another shade.
  • Satin ribbons (wide and narrow).
  • Satin fabric for a vest.
  • Wide elastic band.

Sew the vest with ties in the front or without them, at your discretion. For ties, use narrow satin ribbons that match the color of the fabric.

The tu-tu skirt is made as follows. Measure the child's waist, cut a wide elastic band to the desired length and sew the ends together. Tulle ribbons are knitted on top.

The easiest way to do this is to put a rubber band on the back of a chair or similar object.

The tulle strip should be twice the length of the skirt. Fold it in half and tie it to the elastic with a loop knot. An important point: the elastic band should not be pulled together; do not tighten the knots too tightly.

Knit knots close to each other, alternate colors.

Decorate the belt with a bow or ribbon.

Option with fringe

A simple and effective version of the Mukha-Tsokotukha costume for a girl with her own hands would be such a suit with an elegant “fringe”. For this you will need patience and a few free evenings.

Materials:

  • A t-shirt with a sleeve and any unnecessary skirt for the base.
  • Metallic gold cardboard (several sheets).
  • Foamiran (foam material, sold in craft stores) black and brown. For a budget-friendly alternative, use colored paper or thin cardboard.
  • Whatman.
  • Glue.

Instructions:

  • First of all, from a sheet of whatman paper, build something like a bib, as in the picture.

Measure along the length of the child’s torso, record the width and height. The bib should not fit too tightly.

  • Decorate the breast of the fly.

Divide a sheet of foamiran or colored paper in half and cut out strips without reaching the end of the sheet. Glue strip after strip onto the corset so that the gap between them is not visible. Attach the straps like on a backpack to keep the chest level.

Attach a bib to the base (long or short sleeve T-shirt) so that the child can take off and put on the T-shirt without damaging the structure.

  • Then start on the skirt.

Alternate a strip of brown leaf, which you cut into fringe, with a strip of black leaf. Alternatively, choose a solid color set. Sew to the skirt so that there are no gaps. The optimal length of the skirt should be no lower than the knee so that it does not restrict movement.

  • By combining the skirt and bib, you get the DIY fly costume from the photo above.

Important details of the image

In order for the appearance to truly resemble a mosquito, all the details should be thoroughly worked out. In nature, we see that all mosquitoes look the same. Although they have their differences, to the human eye they seem insignificant and are practically unrecognizable. We can only compare them by size.

The costume, on the contrary, will be different in that it can be created to suit every taste. It is not necessary to achieve an exact match; you can add something of your own. Get creative and don't be afraid to use your imagination!

IMPORTANT! When coming up with the appearance of a character, try to preserve the features of its structure.

Everything else depends on your imagination.

In order to get a full-fledged mosquito, you need to develop the following elements of the outfit.

  • The basis discussed above.
  • A cap that will serve as a head.
  • A nose or proboscis is also necessary.
  • Wings of any size.
  • Shoes that match your suit and are comfortable on your feet.

Important! All elements must be gray shades. This will be the leading color in the image of a mosquito.

Additionally, you can use red, purple, black colors, but do not put too much emphasis on them.

Step-by-step learning to weave a dragonfly from beads

  1. To make a beautiful dragonfly from beads, use the “Parallel Weaving” technique. Before making a dragonfly from beads, the diagram of which is shown in the photo, prepare a 0.3 mm wire. Make the middle of the dragonfly, its abdomen. To do this, take 30 cm of wire and put 1 black bead on it, stretch it to the middle. Pass the other end of the wire through it and tighten.

  2. Pick up 1 more black bead and pass the other end of the wire through it, tightening it. In the same way, collect 3 more beads so that there are 5 pieces in total.

  6. For the dragonfly's eyes, use 2 yellow beads. To do this, put 1 yellow bead on each side of the wire and pass the wire through the black bead of the previous row. Secure the ends of the wire by passing them through the black beads several times and trim them.

  11. Before making a beaded dragonfly with wings, take the dragonfly base and attach the top wing. To do this, pass one wire from the wing through the top row of 3 black beads, and the second through the row below and pull up the wing. Secure the wire through the beads and cut it off. Secure the second upper wing in the same way opposite the first.

The mosquito is one of the most unattractive insects. Participating in a matinee in a faded gray suit will not bring pleasure to a child. Therefore, we propose to sew Komarik a hussar suit. It is in this form that artists most often depict a mosquito when illustrating K. Chukovsky’s fairy tale “The Cluttering Fly.”

1. Jacket (uniform) 2. Trousers 3. Shako 4. Boots

Mask designs for cutting

There are different patterns that do not always symbolize animals. Children love cool costumes; a mask of a plague doctor, a mad genius or a gypsy is suitable for them. Some people play evil characters at matinees. In this case, masks with the face of the devil, an old sorcerer or uncle Chernomor would be relevant.

The black and white masks are painted by the children themselves. The advantage of sketches is that the child shows creativity. His cow comes in purple and his goat comes in flowery pink. After the matinee, the organizers organize competitions for the most interesting or original face mask.

When creating a New Year's image, masks of snowflakes, Father Frost, Snow Maiden or Baba Yaga are suitable. If a child does not want to wear a full-fledged mask, then the ears of a hare, fox or bear will suit him.

Emotion masks will convey a happy or sad mood. They are made in the shape of a sun or a popular smiley face.
