Make a paper tomato costume with your own hands

Master class “Vegetable caps for autumn”

Lately I've been tired of the usual flat printed hats vegetables for skits and round dances. I thought for a very long time about how to make them more interesting and brighter. In the end, this is what happened.

Material: colored corrugated paper, Whatman paper, ruler, pencil, scissors, stapler (or glue gun)

.

Step-by-step photos are presented using beets as an example.

1. To begin with, I took whatman paper and cut off a 7cm strip. and stapled the edges together. The result is a frame.

2. Then I measured burgundy corrugated paper along the length of the frame and folded it in half, so it’s stronger.

3. Using scissors, I made cuts on the paper at equal distances, approximately 4 cm long.

of the hat in a circle using a stapler (I stapled it inward so that they would not catch on the children’s hair)

.

5. I assembled the top, folded the corners and stapled it together to form a cone.

6. I cut out the tops from green corrugated paper, folded in half.

7. I turned the resulting cone of the cap inside and attached the tops from the inside so that the beets turned out round.

I made carrots and onions using the same principle. Only on the bow, so that the feathers stand, I fold them several times and attach each one separately. And I drew “eyes” on the carrots with marker.

I made the potatoes a little differently. I cut out a square from brown corrugated paper, covered the frame of the cap on top so that the paper remained on top, and secured it on four sides. Then I collected the remaining paper evenly in a circle. I stapled it on top in several places from the inside to create “eyes.”

From what and how can you sew a tomato costume with your own hands and at home?

What master classes and ideas are there for sewing an original carnival costume for the holiday?

The most important thing in the tomato costume is the detail in the form of a red ball. The easiest way to make it is to take two rectangular pieces of fabric - crepe-satin or taffeta (to better hold its shape) each about 1.5 meters long, depending on the height of the child. Sew along the sides, leaving holes for the arms. Fold the product along the bottom and top and pass the elastic (Fig. 1).

There is a slightly more complicated method : take fabric about 3 meters long, twice as wide as the width of the finished skirt. Stitch the side sections, and then proceed according to Figures 2-4. Sew straps to the finished skirt and wear it like a sundress. For this costume there must also be a green turtleneck, green tights or trousers. The collar can be made as in Figure 5. Tie a green bow on your head (if it’s a girl) or wear a rain cap (Figure 6).

If you have problems with sewing, then you don’t need to worry, you can still make an excellent tomato costume for a children’s party. So, if you need to make a tomato costume for a boy , then you can use green tights or pants (shorts) and a red top (T-shirt, shirt), onto which you can glue a tomato cut out of cardboard. Or cut out a strip of paper to fit the circumference of the child’s head, glue the ends together to make a circle, and stick a drawn or cut out tomato on it.

You can use the following template for cutting:

If you need a tomato costume for a girl , then we put on green tights or leggings, as well as a red skirt and sweater, or dress. You can also make a cardboard tomato for your head.

A red skirt can be made from tulle; to do this, we make an elastic band at the girl’s waist level and tie strips of tulle on it.

The most important thing in the Tomato costume, as in the costume of any other vegetable or fruit, is the headdress. It is this that is intended to be the main emphasis, but everything else is easier to do. I already wrote about how to make a hat. To do this, we simply take red material, cut out a rectangle from it (the length of the rectangle is equal to the circumference of the child’s head + seam allowances), the height of the rectangle is made “by eye”, longer, so that it is convenient to make a handle. We bend the bottom edge by about 1.5 cm, hem it, insert the elastic into the hole formed, gather the fabric over the elastic, and hem the ends of the elastic to the fabric. We sew up the seam at the back, put the blank on the child’s head, and secure the excess ends with a hair elastic on top. Without removing the elastic, we twist the ends at the top, hem them, and wrap them with green satin ribbon. Be sure to set the satin ribbon on fire with matches, otherwise it will all come apart. You can make a cap for a tomato using this pattern:

Master Class

  1. Measure your head circumference.
  2. Cut the wire. The length of the wire depends on the size of the head circumference.
  3. Trace a wire circle on the cardboard.
  4. Step back 2 cm from the circle and outline the fields.
  5. Make marks on the circles so that you can align them correctly later.
  6. Make a rectangle of cardboard along the length of the small circle.
  7. Roll it into a circle and secure with a glue gun.
  8. Glue the small circle on top of the folded circle.
  9. Glue the larger circle onto the bottom of the folded circle.
  10. Wrap the hat in fabric and secure with a glue gun.
  11. Decorate the hat to your taste by decorating it with ribbons, flowers and beads.

I recommend watching the video master class!

A cardboard hat will make a cute gift. A huge advantage of such a headdress is that you can get creative and make a hat of any color and decorate it the way you want with your own hands.

The tomato is the hero of many children's parties. Matinees or performances are not complete without beautiful fairy-tale costumes. Making your child an outfit in the shape of a vegetable or fruit will be an excellent way to prepare for the holiday. The Tomato costume will help add color and originality to your look.

Cardboard crown with cotton wool rim

Real kings and queens will surely like a crown lined with “furs” made of cotton wool.

To make a crown with a rim made of cotton wool, print out a template for cutting:

Template for cutting out a crown with a rim of cotton wool

Cut out the printed template along the contour.

Using the template, we draw outlines for cutting onto the cardboard.

Outlines for cutting on cardboard

Glue the cardboard parts of the crown together. Glue a strip of thick fabric (felt or burlap) to the inside. Such a crown will stay better on a child’s head.

Glue a strip of thick fabric

The base of the crown is ready! We decorate the crown with sequins and paper strips. We glue rolled cotton wool around the circumference of the crown, which we paint with yellow paint. Instead of cotton wool, you can use a strip of light fur.

Features of the Tomato costume

The Tomato costume is made in classic shades - red and green . For decoration, you can use black and white to create a face or highlight details.

To create the image you will need the main part - the shape of a tomato . And in addition, the cap (the top of the tomato). Many craftswomen experiment with the image and add their own creative solutions.

This look is easy to create. It is one of the most colorful, as red is a bright, rich shade. The Tomato outfit is great for kids and adults. The main thing is to choose the right details, and a fabulous image will be created without difficulty.

We will show you how to make such an outfit with your own hands.

How to sew a Tomato costume for a boy

For a boy, the image can be created in several versions.

First option

To create the first one we need the following.

  • Red loose-fitting T-shirts (one is for a boy, the second can be taken from dad).
  • Green felt.
  • Filler (cotton wool, foam rubber, padding polyester).
  • Threads, scissors.

Work algorithm

  • a large T-shirt inside out. Sew the bottom of the fabric to the bottom of the item to size. At the same time we sew with a small gathering.
  • We turn the product onto the face and cut off the sleeves.
  • We wrap the cut edge inward so that the threads are not visible, and hem it to the sleeve of a small T-shirt.
  • We cut out leaves from green felt , like on a real tomato. The size of one leaf should be within 5–10 cm. We decorate the neck with cut out parts (attach or sew by hand from the front side).
  • To sew a hat, we need the remaining sleeve of a T-shirt and a small piece of green felt fabric . We take the flap and tighten its cut with threads. We decorate it with cut out green leaves.
  • The final stage will be assembling the suit . We put T-shirts on the child and put cotton wool or foam rubber inside through the neck between the sewn T-shirts. We put a hat on our head (if desired, you can sew an elastic band so that the hat does not fall off). The children's costume is ready.

Second option

To create the second image we need to prepare the following materials.

  • Men's loose-fitting red T-shirt.
  • Satin ribbons.
  • Green felt.
  • Felt in black, white, pink shades.
  • Threads, scissors.
  • PVA glue.

Algorithm of actions

  • We turn the bottom edge of the product inside and pin it with hairpins and pins in a circle .
  • Using a machine, we make equal cuts on the curved part every 8 cm .
  • We thread the tape into the thin holes . The edges should come out inside out.
  • We cut the sleeves of the T-shirt, fold them over and sew them in a circle.
  • From colored felt we cut out eyes, a nose, a smile and leaves for decoration . Sew leaves along the neckline. We attach the details of the face to the center of the front part.

Incredible look to wear!

Elsa's crown from the cartoon Frozen (Frozen)

You can make a more complex product using a figured stencil, braid and bugle beads.

The length of the lower part of such a crown should correspond to the circumference of the child’s head. We simply fix the upper part with glue.

Glue the rim and decoration

We glue pebbles to the top and draw patterns. It turns out to be an elegant, neat attribute of power.

How to sew a Tomato costume for a girl

If you need to create a costume for a girl, you can do without cutting and sewing complex models .

Choose green tights or leggings . On top we put on a red skirt (you can sew a tutu of the same shade) with a jacket

.
Instead of a skirt and blouse, you can choose a dress .
The image is almost complete. A cardboard hat in the shape of a tomato will help complete the outfit . We draw a figure and cut it out on thick cardboard of the desired shade. We attach the resulting cardboard tomato to the headband, elastic band or tail.

Advice . You can make a skirt for the outfit from tulle yourself.

To create a tutu, you will need an elastic band slightly larger than the child’s waist and material . We tie an elastic band at the waist and fasten strips of tulle in a circle.

It turns out a bright, beautiful fluffy skirt.

Crown cutting templates

If you display the image on a sufficiently thick and, if desired, colored sheet, it can be used as a blank - by cutting it along the contour, gluing it or attaching an elastic band, you will get the finished product. But more often, printouts are used as templates (stencils).

How to make a suit out of paper

If you don’t have any luck with sewing, and you have a large cardboard at home, then don’t worry. And cardboard can make a stylish holiday costume . It's not difficult to make.

  • Draw two ovals of equal diameter on cardboard and cut them out. This will be the back and chest. The size of the figure will depend on your preferences and the height of the child . The two parts are secured to the shoulders with elastic bands or green rubber bands.
  • On the figure that will be the front part, we paint green leaves along the neck . And in the center we depict a smiling face . If desired, parts can be cut out from colored cardboard or scraps of fabric and glued.

Important! In order not to waste time preparing the details of the face, you can buy self-adhesive stickers in the store. They will look bright and beautiful on a suit.

To complete the look we need a hat.

A cap

The last detail of the costume will be making the hat. It is made from a piece of knitted T-shirt. To do this, cut out a strip of material and, wrapping it around the head, sew the edges. It turns out to be a “pipe”, the upper part of which must be pulled together and stitched in the center. To prevent the seam from standing out, the headdress is decorated with leaves. They are made according to the same pattern as for the collar.

DIY tomato costume for a boy

Sew them in such a way that the leaves look in different directions. The bottom does not need to be turned up, as the knitwear will remain in good shape for a long time and the edge will not fray. In any case, such a hat will withstand the celebration until the end.

Choose any option from those offered, and your baby will be the most beautiful at the Autumn Festival!

How to make a costume from foam rubber

To create the image we will need:

  • a sheet of foam rubber of medium thickness;
  • atlas of primary colors;
  • scissors, thread.

We cut out two circles of the same diameter from foam rubber . We transfer them to the material, folded in four, and draw an outline. We make an allowance of 2 cm along the edges. Cut out the resulting part.

Between two flaps of satin we place one circle of foam rubber and sew the product in a circle . We make two identical volumetric circles. Then we sew the two parts on the sides. The parts for the arms and neck should remain open .

You can optionally attach the face of a vegetable to the part that will be the main one. This way you can give the image a fabulous look. Now all that remains is to complete the outfit with a head set.

The cap is made from diamond-shaped wedges. The three parts are sewn together, and a branch of the stalk is attached in the center. The finished outfit can be worn with leggings, trousers and a shirt, blouse or turtleneck.

How to create a Tomato look in a simple way

To transform into a Tomato, you don’t have to sew elaborate outfits or buy special suits. For a children's event, you can create an outfit from scrap items .

  • For example, if you wear green tights, pants, leggings, and on top a red sweater, dress, tunic, shirt . Glue the self-adhesive parts of the face to the outerwear, then you will get a tomato. You can also replace the face with vegetable figures and stick them all over your clothes.
  • Another win-win option would be a headdress in the form of a selected vegetable . You can attach a tomato shape to a hoop, elastic band or bandage and dress in the color of the vegetable. The main thing is imagination.

A tomato costume can be sewn, glued, knitted, or created with your own hands from scrap items and auxiliary materials.

All you need is desire, time and a little creative thinking. Then the universal outfit for the holiday will be ready. Don't forget to take a photo of your happy child!
