Insects cause a lot of problems in summer. They spoil the rest, interfere with eating sweet fruits and haunt a person when he decides to use perfume with a pungent odor. Particularly annoying are mosquitoes, which can ruin even the most pleasant outdoor gatherings with your family. That’s why we think that the bottle mosquito trap that we’ll show you today can help you out a lot.
Homemade traps
If you decide to thoroughly fight bloodsuckers and show your imagination, we offer you several ways to make mosquito traps yourself.
Option #1
Mosquitoes search for prey by thermal radiation, as well as by the smell of lactic acid. But one of the most powerful factors that attracts bloodsuckers is the carbon dioxide released by warm-blooded creatures and animals. It is on this principle that the trap works, in which carbon dioxide acts as bait.
To make a trap, you will need:
- Plastic bottle.
- Scissors or knife.
- Bait (half a glass of warm water, half a glass of sugar, 5 g of yeast).
- Opaque paper or metal foil.
Manufacturing stages:
- Cut the plastic bottle crosswise so that the neck (cone) is ⅓ of the total length.
- Turn the plastic funnel upside down and insert it into the lower, cut-off part of the bottle. The insect container is ready.
- Mix the bait ingredients thoroughly. Make sure that the water is not above 30 degrees (otherwise the yeast bacteria will die), pour the mixture into the bottle.
- Wrap the bottle in metal foil or opaque paper (newspaper) so that the mosquitoes are not confused by the light.
- Seal the joints between the cone and the bottom of the container so that carbon dioxide does not escape from the cracks, but only from the neck.
- Place the device in a dark corner and happy hunting!
Important! The solution poured into the bottle will immediately begin to ferment and the yeast bacteria that absorb the sugar will release carbon dioxide, which will attract mosquitoes. If the amount of yeast and sugar is sufficient, the process can continue for more than one day. Mosquitoes, sensing carbon dioxide, will fly to its smell and fly inside the bottle
Finding no way out, they will remain there to die. Change the contents of the bottle every 2 weeks
Mosquitoes, sensing carbon dioxide, will fly to its smell and fly inside the bottle. Finding no way out, they will remain there to die. Change the contents of the bottle every 2 weeks.
If you replace the yeast with thick sugar syrup or jam, then with such a trap you can catch wasps and flies that will flock to the sweet in schools.
Option No. 2
Mosquitoes, like other nocturnal insects, have the habit of flying towards the light. They can be lured to some kind of lamp and sucked into a gauze bag using an electric fan, such as is installed on computer power supplies. The air flow created by the fan, together with the light, will prevent mosquitoes from entering the room if you hang the device in front of an open window in the room.
Advantages of this device:
- No toxic chemicals.
- There is no ultrasound, which affects not so much mosquitoes as humans.
- No high voltage.
- Simplicity and accessibility of the design.
The only drawback is the quiet fan noise.
To make the device you will need:
- Small light bulb (from the refrigerator).
- Wire for the handle.
- Cardboard two-liter tetra juice bag for making a case.
- Scissors.
- Electric fan (from a computer power supply with a diameter of 8-12 cm).
- Gauze bag.
- Scrunchy.
Manufacturing stages:
- Cut off the top end of the cardboard tetra bag.
- Punch 2 holes in the sides.
- Pull a wire handle through the holes.
- Cut a hole in the bottom of the bag for the electric fan.
Important! Position the instrument fan so that it draws air down from the lamp
- Attach a gauze bag to the bottom of the body using a hair tie.
- Tie the light bulb socket to a wire handle, bent so that you get a loop on top for hanging.
- Connect the light bulb and fan to the mains using special adapters.
- Secure the structure in the corner of the window opening or in any other place.
Operating principle:
The insect, attracted by the light, will approach the lamp, and under the influence of the air flow, will be drawn first into the cardboard case and then into the gauze bag. Clean the fan blades once a week to remove stuck insects.
Important! Instead of a tetra bag, you can use other suitable cardboard packaging or glue it yourself from cardboard
Electronic trap
Building such a trap is not as simple as it seems at first glance. To do this, you need to have basic skills in working with electrical appliances. But if everything works out, such a trap can be used in an apartment, country house or country house.
General diagram of an electromechanical trap for flies and mosquitoes
To make it you need the following materials and tools:
- 1 liter paper bag for juice, milk, or kefir;
- thick wire;
- portable portable fan powered by batteries (you can use a car battery);
- a small 10-25 W light bulb or flashlight;
- gauze;
- glue;
- scissors;
- stationery knife.
Such a trap for mosquitoes and midges can be made in the following way:
Schematic illustration of an electronic mosquito trap
- Using a utility knife or scissors, cut off the bottom and top of the paper bag.
- Install a fan at the bottom of the container so that when it is turned on, the air flow is directed downward. Secure the device with wire.
- Cut out mugs with a diameter of 0.7 m from gauze.
- Using glue, attach gauze to the bottom of the container to create something like a bag.
- Make a hole on top of the bag on both sides. Install a thick wire so that the handle comes out (like a bucket).
- Attach a light bulb or flashlight to such a handle using the same wire.
- Also install a small loop of metal wire on the handle, with which you can secure the trap in the desired location.
- Turn on the light bulb and fan. After this, install this device near a window or other place where annoying insects appear most often.
This trap for mosquitoes and midges works in such a way that the pests fly up to it in a bright light, and the fan creates an air flow that will help move the insects inside the gauze bag.
How to make a trap from a plastic bottle with your own hands
Controlling winged pests does not require significant costs. A do-it-yourself mosquito trap is a device of two types:
- From plastic bottles with bait: carbon dioxide, water or a light bulb. The device is cheap, easy to manufacture, but not highly effective. If you use yeast as a filling, there will be an unpleasant smell near the bottle. They all operate on the same principle: the insect flies into a funnel without a chance to get out of it.
- Velcro tapes. They are hung near a window or balcony door. The design of this device is more complicated than in the first case.
On carbon dioxide
Mosquitoes look for their victims by the smell of CO₂ - it is emitted by all warm-blooded creatures. The deception is that this gas is emitted not only by living organisms. Carbon dioxide is also formed as a result of fermentation. Yeast releases it when consuming carbohydrates, thereby attracting blood-sucking insects. This bait is prepared from three components:
- sugar – 50 g;
- dry baker's yeast – 5 g;
- water – 200 ml.

All you need for the catcher are typical household items. You will need the following materials:
- plastic bottle (1.5 l) – 1 pc.;
- cardboard or dark fabric;
- scissors or stationery knife;
- scotch;
- stapler
Having collected everything you need, you can start making a homemade mosquito trap. The bottle is cut into two parts, the smaller of which has a neck. Following are the instructions:
- Sugar is poured into the lower container, adding yeast.
- Water is also poured in there.
- The resulting mass is thoroughly mixed (it should foam). The permissible temperature of the liquid is not higher than 40 degrees. Otherwise, the yeast will die before fermentation begins.
- The neck is inserted into a container with bait to form a funnel.
- The walls are wrapped in dark cloth or cardboard, secured with tape/stapler. This will speed up the fermentation process, which takes place more actively in the dark.
- The finished device is placed where mosquitoes accumulate (next to an open window or on the terrace). If you have twine, the container can be hung indoors.
A simplified version of a homemade trap. It is made from only two components:
- plastic bottles – 3-4 pcs.;
- vegetable oil – 4 tbsp. spoons.
The manufacturing process goes like this:
- The neck of the bottle is cut off - it no longer needs to be used as a funnel.
- The lower parts of the containers are generously lubricated with sunflower oil.
- Traps are placed in places where insects gather.
- You can cut holes on the sides by threading ropes through them. This way you can hang containers around the premises.
This option is designed for the principle of mosquito breeding. The trap works differently from the previous two. It only helps control the population of bloodsuckers. It is more difficult to make an artificial “reservoir” than a container with carbon dioxide or vegetable oil.
- Cut off the neck of the container.
- Make holes in the top of the remaining container. This will be a drain for excess water. The holes are sealed with scraps of window mesh. It is advisable to make two more holes higher in order to attach a carrying handle to them.
- The bottle is painted with black paint. This achieves the effect of a dark, stagnant pond - a suitable breeding ground for mosquitoes.
- Next, the container is filled with liquid until it reaches the drain holes.
- A window mesh is placed over the bottle.
Mosquitoes willingly flock to “blooming water”, so it is advisable to also throw a bunch of grass into the trap. This will cause the liquid to become infected with algae. The females will fly up to the pond and begin laying eggs directly on the net.
A midge trap is the best way to get rid of winged pests
Imagine the following situation: you notice that small annoying midges have appeared in your house. They constantly end up in your plate of food, suddenly fly out of drains and cabinets, and you’re also tired of carefully examining its contents for the presence of midges before taking a sip of coffee from a cup.
Once the location has been found, a thorough cleaning must be carried out. This is where the larvae live, which eventually turn into new midges. However, even after eliminating the cause, the midges that hatched from the larvae continue to fly indoors. Of course, if you deprive them of food, they will soon disappear. But this is not always possible to do, especially if they live in the kitchen.
For this, you can, for example, use various chemicals, but they can have a detrimental effect not only on midges, but also on all living things in the house, including animals and indoor plants.
A midge trap is exactly what is needed in this situation. This type of device can probably be found in stores, but why spend the extra money when it's easy to make yourself?
So, we present to your attention five of the easiest to make and most popular midge traps that are easy to make with your own hands:
Method 1.
Pour a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into a glass jar and cover it tightly with a lid. First, several holes should be made in the lid using a knife or scissors.
It is important that the holes are slightly larger in size than the midge itself. If necessary, instead of a glass jar, you can use any other container
The main thing is that its neck is wide enough. The midges will flock to the smell of vinegar and end up in a jar, from which they will no longer be able to get out.
If necessary, instead of a glass jar, you can use any other container. The main thing is that its neck is wide enough. The midges will flock to the smell of vinegar and end up in the jar, from which they will no longer be able to get out.
The jar must be installed in the place where the accumulation of insects is greatest. You can easily replace apple cider vinegar with regular one or lure winged pests with a slice of rotten fruit.
Method 2.
To bring it to life, we will need a very ordinary plastic bottle, the top of which should be cut off, turned over and inserted back so as to form a funnel.
The joint between the cut edges will be clearly visible. It must be sealed with tape so that not a single midge can escape from there. Place any midge treat at the bottom of the bottle. This could be vinegar, rotten fruit, sweetened water, jam and much more.
After a few days, you will notice that a fairly large number of midges are trapped. Do not remove it until you completely get rid of uninvited guests in your home.
Method 3.
In this case, you should use a yogurt cup. Place tea leaves or a used tea bag inside. The glass is covered with cling film, in which several holes are made using a toothpick. This trap will operate on a principle similar to that described in the first method.
Method 4.
And this method repeats the one that uses a plastic bottle. Only in this case, red wine, which has a distinct smell, is poured into the bottom of the plastic container, as well as a little soap solution. The latter will not allow midges, who have decided to refresh themselves with wine, to get out of the bottle.
Method 5.
This method is suitable for those people who do not have any of the above at hand. But in every home there is sure to be at least one plastic bag that should be used.
We put bait in the bag and leave it open. As soon as you notice that a sufficient number of midges have appeared in the bag, you need to tie it up very quickly. Of course, this method of catching midges is not as effective as all the others, but nevertheless it helps.
Midges, small annoying insects that are always present in a person’s home and remind him of their existence at the slightest opportunity. It is especially unpleasant to encounter them in the kitchen, which is a storage area for food supplies and a gathering place for all the inhabitants of the home. Also, midges often settle at the root system of indoor plants and overwhelm pets, dogs and cats.
A time-tested and people-tested method of fighting midges is a midge trap. Unlike toxic chemicals, it poses absolutely no danger and is quite easy to manufacture.
How to Prepare to Create a Trap
To make a trap with your own hands, you need little - something that is in the “arsenal” of almost every owner or housewife:
- Plastic bottle. The volume of this container is not important, and in most cases it is recommended to use the two-liter version.
- One glass of tap water (filtered or boiled water will also work).
- One teaspoon of yeast.
- Fifty to seventy grams of sugar (preferably brown, although white will do).
- Knife or scissors.
- Not too thin paper or foil.
- Adhesive tape.
As you can see, the list of components is modest: it does not require serious expenses.
It is also worth choosing the place where the created trap will be installed. This could be the entrance to the room, a window sill, or if you live in a private house, a place in the yard under a night lamp or lamp. In principle, mosquitoes will find bait even if it is not in plain sight. To achieve maximum effect, it is recommended to choose the places listed above.
A mosquito repellent device can be made in a couple of minutes. It does not give off any foreign odor
Effective DIY mosquito trap
You will need
- 1.5 liter plastic bottle without cork
- 1 glass of warm water
- 2 tbsp. l. granulated sugar
- 1 tsp. dry yeast
- a piece of dark cloth, newspaper or foil
- Cut the top of the bottle so that it is equal to one third of the length of the entire container.
- Pour a glass of water no warmer than 30 degrees into the bottom of the bottle. Add sugar, mix well. Then add the yeast and stir again.
- Place the cut cone on top with the neck facing inward. If the parts do not fit together tightly, it is advisable to fasten them with tape or glue in the rim area. This way, carbon dioxide will only escape through the neck and insects will not accumulate on the outside.
- Now the bottle needs to be wrapped in cloth or newspaper and secured at the edges.
- Place ready-made traps in dark corners of the room where there are no drafts. Can be used outdoors, but the effect will be weaker.
- Mosquitoes readily fly to the smell of fermentation, and they are also attracted by the lack of light inside. When they try to get out of the trap, they move upward, but due to the narrow hole and sticky walls, sooner or later they fall into the water, where they die.
How mosquito bait works
This trap is designed for pregnant female mosquitoes - they are the ones who suck blood. Insects search for victims by thermal radiation and exhaled carbon dioxide.
The main components of the bait are yeast, warm water and sugar. During the process of alcoholic fermentation, they produce enough carbon dioxide, which also attracts midges. The trap works while fermentation is in progress - from 5 to 7 days, depending on the room temperature (the cooler, the longer).
The device can be adapted for other insects - fruit flies, wasps, hornets or flies. To do this, pour a glass of warm water into the bottle, and place pieces of fruit, honey or jam on top on a small “boat” made of foil so that the bait does not drown. Place the top of the bottle on top using the same principle, and you're done. This trap lasts up to 2 weeks.
If a mosquito does bite, but you can’t restrain yourself and tear the bite apart, use folk remedies that relieve itching and repel mosquitoes. Also read about 7 repellent plants that harmful insects are afraid of.
Types of mosquito traps
All mosquito traps operate on a similar principle - they lure mosquitoes into an area from which there is no return. They are attracted to warmth, food, humidity and human smell. That is why for each type of trap, one of the factors that attracts mosquitoes is taken.
Industrially manufactured and commercially available traps are divided into five groups:
- thermal;
- water;
- ultraviolet;
- carbon dioxide;
- propane
Heat traps
From the name of this type of trap it is clear that it emits heat currents and this is what lures mosquitoes. The big advantage is that this type is used both outside and inside country houses and apartments. Let's talk about other advantages of a thermal device for catching mosquitoes:
The trap is designed in such a way that it attracts insects not only by emitted heat, but also by simulating human presence. This occurs due to the fact that the traps contain carbon dioxide or attractants, which in their composition and smell are as close as possible to human sweat. The standard coverage radius of the trap is 50 meters. In calm weather, one device protects the dacha area from mosquitoes
However, when choosing, you should pay attention to the power of the trap - depending on it, the device covers an area with a radius of 20 to 50 meters. Some types of heat traps are equipped with LEDs, which significantly extends their service life: LED lamps last for more hours of operation
They also have minimal energy consumption, which has a positive effect on housekeeping and savings. The traps are equipped with special nets and water tanks - the owner himself chooses how exactly to get rid of mosquitoes caught in the trap. The presence of a mesh and a reservoir in the device is determined by the specific type of trap. If the device is equipped with a net, then once caught in the trap, mosquitoes cannot get out of it - they die from dehydration. If there is a special reservoir into which water should be poured to a specified level, then the mosquitoes attracted by the trap will drown. In most cases, judging by consumer reviews, the format of draining dead insects from a trap is convenient - this is easier to do than freeing the mesh from them. In addition, mosquitoes lay eggs in water, but at the same time quickly drown in any liquid.
Attraction by heat is one of the baits for mosquitoes, to which they flock well
There are three significant drawbacks to thermal devices:
- High price (individual copies reach 1 thousand dollars). This cost is due to its high efficiency and the ability to cover large areas. Such products are not in mass demand and are suitable for use on the street or in large houses.
- Requires a lot of space for installation (the devices are bulky).
- Constant access to the power grid is required, so they are not suitable for dachas where there is no light.
- electrical devices. They attract insects using lamp light. Mosquitoes or midges fly to this device, after which they are destroyed by an electric charge, from exposure to high temperature or in another way;
- glue traps. Small pests fly to the smell or bright light, after which they stick to the surface;
- devices with poisoned baits. These devices lure insects, after which they die from exposure to special chemicals;
- traps that work by mechanically collecting insects. Small pests are attracted by sweet liquid, fruit or other substances. They are collected in a special container and then disposed of.
Review of popular traps
Below are street remedies that are in great demand among consumers.
Sitetek Still
Another effective tool is the Sititek Still trap. The device works using ultraviolet light, carbon dioxide (which mimics human breathing) and heat. The operation of the built-in fan facilitates the penetration of approaching insects into the device. The pests do not have the opportunity to get back out, as a result of which they die from dehydration.
It is ideal to use such a device. After all, the impact area extends to 100 square meters. m. In addition, the device has a wide range of applications - it is also effective against black flies, midges and wasps.
The trap has 2 operating modes (uninterrupted and timed). Silent, does not emit toxic chemicals. Therefore, the Sititek Still trap can be used even in rooms where there are children. Another advantage of the device is its cost-effectiveness. The device does not require additional consumables, not even carbon dioxide. It is formed by a photocatalytic method. The cost of mosquito repellent is slightly less than 4,000 rubles.
Insect killer 14044er
For areas up to 4 acres, the Insect killer trap is suitable. The American device, produced by Flowtron, has a double effect on pests. It is based on the use of an ultraviolet lamp, the light of which serves as a bait for annoying insects. This element also has another function: it can be used as a source of evening lighting. Mosquitoes that approach the trap will inevitably die from an electrical discharge that passes through the metal grid.
To enhance the luring effect, the device uses Octenol, a composition reminiscent of human sweat. This substance does not pose a danger to human health, as it is not toxic. In addition, its smell is completely imperceptible to people.
The Insect killer outdoor mosquito catcher has a long service life as it is equipped with a high-quality steel body. The cost of an innovative invention is in the range of 6100-6300 rubles.
Mt64
The Chinese Mt64 trap also has similar properties. It creates comfort during an evening relaxation in nature and protects against mosquitoes in an area of up to 6000 square meters. m.
The principle of operation of the device is to release heat and carbon dioxide, which imitate human breathing. The uninterrupted operation of the trap for 15 days helps to interrupt the biological cycle of pest reproduction, which leads to a reduction in the pest population.
The price range of the product varies between 3000-3200 rubles.
Trap Mt100
Another analogue for large areas is the Mt100 mosquito repellent equipment. The coverage diameter of the protective function of this system is up to 15 acres.
The gas mosquito trap uses six proven methods to attract pests. Carbon dioxide (in a cylinder), heat, and a mixture of octenol and lactic acid are used as bait.
Also, the attention of insects is attracted by ultraviolet light, which they catch at a great distance and the black color of the body
To collect mosquitoes, midges and other flying insects that enter the device, there is a container in the trap. The price is within 7000 rubles.
Laser gun
The laser mosquito repellent is unique in its essence. This device can destroy an entire colony of insects (effectiveness is up to hundreds of mosquitoes per second). The device is equipped with an optical system, the work of which is to process incoming signals in the form of images using infrared radiation. Thanks to this, the invention can even recognize the gender of a flying individual at a distance of 30 m. After which the system sends a command to a powerful laser to destroy the pest.
In the summer, night “singers” pester not only residents of rural houses, but even city dwellers living on the first five floors. The stores sell many different or premises. Most of them have rather difficult conditions of use or high prices. A homemade mosquito trap may not have these disadvantages, since most often it is made from scrap materials. Such homemade products are based on the biological characteristics of insects: the desire to find a source of carbon dioxide and night flights aimed at the Moon. The latter is the reason why nocturnal insects “fly towards the light.”
Comparative characteristics of the best purchased models
Often, industrial devices for attracting insects use several factors in combination, so it is quite difficult to unambiguously determine the type of trap. There are almost no, for example, only insecticidal devices - the action of the bait is supplemented by heat and/or light.

A water trap is a very interesting and effective option, but it is almost impossible to purchase it in Russia. You have to act through foreign sites, for example, eBay. A popular option is the 1/2 Acre Pole Mount With Water Tray Dyntrap Insect Trap. The stylish design is mains powered, resembles a garden lantern, and costs about 6,300 rubles. It is distinguished by efficiency, noiselessness, and resistance to adverse weather conditions. Disadvantages, in addition to the lack of free sale, are periodic evaporation of water in the heat, the need to remove mosquitoes that come across.

A homemade mosquito trap made from a plastic bottle lasts for about a week, after which the bait is renewed. An increased dose of yeast and sugar increases its longevity
It is important that the container is not exposed to direct sunlight. Otherwise, all fermentation will come to naught. It is also undesirable to place it near people, since the bait emits a specific smell

Designs of simple traps
Below are simple options for homemade products that allow you to quickly get rid of mosquitoes indoors and outdoors.
Bottle with bait
A common type of trap, used not only by residents of the post-Soviet space, but also by people abroad, especially in “field” conditions, when it is simply impossible to connect a fumigator or purchase a special lotion that repels mosquitoes.
The product consists of a plastic bottle, water, sugar and yeast. Manufacturing principle:
- Take an empty two-liter plastic bottle and cut off the neck.
- Pour 250 milliliters of warm water into the resulting container and add 70 grams of sugar, stirring it thoroughly until completely dissolved.
- Let the mixture cool to room temperature, then add 2 grams of dry yeast.
- Place the previously cut neck of the bottle in the container so that its neck is directed to the bottom of the trap (“looking” at the liquid).
- Wrap the product in opaque paper, sealing the edges with tape. The upper part remains untouched.
- Place the trap in places where mosquitoes are concentrated and wait for the result.
The product can be used at any time of the day. The working fluid is poured out and replaced as it becomes full of dead mosquitoes.
The principle of operation of the trap is to create specific conditions that attract mosquitoes into the bottle. The blood-sucking insect relies on carbon dioxide and heat emissions when searching for its prey. The combination of sugar, warm water and yeast allows you to start the fermentation process, accompanied by the formation of the necessary parameters. It is not recommended to leave the trap in bright sunlight - heating causes deterioration of the working fluid.
Glue traps
Adhesive traps are extremely easy to make and trap and destroy mosquitoes in areas where they are heavily concentrated.
General scheme:
- Cut out long rectangles from construction paper.
- Make 2-3 holes in the upper part of the workpiece so that you can pass a thread, wire or other holder through them.
- Lubricate the rectangles with an adhesive solution and hang them in places where there are large concentrations of insects.
The basis of the adhesive solution is a combination of substances. Proven recipes:
- Take 200 grams of resin, 100 milliliters of vegetable oil, 35 grams of honey and 10 grams of wax, then mix the ingredients until smooth.
- Mix together 150 grams of rosin and petroleum jelly, 75 grams of honey and 30 grams of glycerin, adding a small amount of water if necessary to obtain a homogeneous substance.
- Combine 250 grams of rosin, 125 milliliters of castor oil, 50 grams of honey, sweet syrup and turpentine in one container. Mix and use as a sticky mixture.
As an alternative basis for applying the adhesive, gauze or thin cloth is used, suspended in the same way (on a rope, wire, thread). Sticky traps do not physically attract mosquitoes, but they do deter mosquitoes from landing on them. Regularly monitor the condition of the product: if it is completely clogged with insects, then you should remove the product and hang a new one.
Sunflower oil catcher
To create the next product you will need a plastic container and vegetable oil. Manufacturing scheme:
- Take a plastic two-liter bottle and cut off the neck.
- Grease the inner walls of the remaining container with vegetable oil.
- Make 3-4 holes in the top of the cut bottle.
- Thread a wire through the holes and hang it in places where insects gather.
This technique is a variation of sticky traps, but it does not require the preparation of a complex solution, which makes it easier to use the product in “field” conditions.
Vacuum cleaner
If you don’t have the time or desire to make a trap, then use a drastic method. It is suitable exclusively for indoor use.
Turn on the lights and find places where mosquitoes gather, then use a portable car vacuum cleaner that runs on batteries or a home equivalent that runs on household power. Collect blood-sucking insects from ceilings, walls and other surfaces. This will not stop single parasites, but the massive invasion will stop.
How to make such a mosquito trap using carbon dioxide?
Don’t worry, we don’t need any carbon dioxide in its pure form, much less cans of it. Everything will be much easier.
Preparing a plastic bottle
To begin with, take any plastic bottle, of course its size should not be 0.5. It’s better to take a two-liter bottle, or even two and a half. It will need to be cut. And it should be cut so that later the neck, which we will insert into the main part with water already poured into it, does not reach the level of this water by about a centimeter or half a centimeter. Look, this place is indicated in the picture. When you cut the bottle, you will get two components. Its upper part will be a kind of funnel, and the lower part will be the main container for our homemade trap.
Preparing the bait
After we have almost completed the technical part, let's prepare bait for the mosquitoes to fly to. It is made from warm water (which we pour into our homemade container), a little sugar and plus yeast. You should not take hot water; its temperature should be no more than 40 degrees. If the temperature of the water you poured is higher, then the fermentation of the yeast will simply stop, and if you pour water at a temperature of more than 50 degrees, your yeast will die altogether.
So, we poured water (200 ml), now stir granulated sugar in it thoroughly. 50 grams will be enough. And the last component that we add to this sweet water is baker's yeast. You only need one gram of such yeast, one bag or, if measured with a teaspoon, then a quarter of it.
When we mix these simple components, it all begins to ferment. During such fermentation, carbon dioxide will be released. And this is what attracts insects to the trap. Mosquitoes very readily fly to this smell, get inside the bottle and are unable to get out.
Installing a trap
Next, we install the trap as shown in the figure, that is, we turn the upper part (“funnel”) upside down and then simply insert it into the main container. That's it, the trap is almost ready. For best efficiency, use dark paper or any dark fabric to darken the entire structure. It is the darkness with carbon dioxide that is attractive to mosquitoes. You will see this for yourself when you remove the darkening in a week. We do this exactly after a week to replace the entire contents of the bottle. In the future, the bait change interval will be the same.
What attracts mosquitoes?
In addition to carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes, during fermentation, sugar slowly turns into alcohol, and heat is also released here, which is also very attractive to mosquitoes.
Sometimes it happens that the yeast produces foam during the fermentation process. If this is exactly what happened to you, then do not forget to clean it periodically. After all, if you don’t remove such foam, it will simply block the neck, which will reduce the effectiveness of your trap, because access to the inside for insects will be blocked.
Pros and cons of such a homemade mosquito trap
If we compare such a homemade trap with an electrical or mechanical one, then it wins over them in the absence of any noise. But it also has a drawback, because when the yeast ferments, not everyone likes the smell (if anyone likes it at all).
One more time to use such a trap. Here you can replace this bait with simple sugar syrup or leftover jam. Then other unwanted guests, such as flies or wasps, may be attracted to these “goodies”.
If you don’t understand something from the description, you can watch this video. Everything is shown very well here.
Primitive but very effective bottle traps
Empty drink containers are often used to catch insects and even small rodents. A mosquito trap made from a plastic bottle will not decorate the interior of an apartment, but it will reduce the number of insects significantly.
Bait with yeast
To make a catching device, you will need a 1.5-2 liter bottle, a glass of water, a pinch of sugar and 1 g of dry baker's yeast. The process consists of several stages:
- Use a knife or scissors to cut off the neck of the plastic container. There is no need to throw in the cut part - it will still be needed.
- Dissolve sugar in water. To do this, it is advisable to heat the liquid. Cool the resulting syrup to 35-40°C and pour into a prepared plastic container. To catch flies and wasps, sugar is replaced with sweet jam.
- Pour yeast into the sweet solution. These can be baked, granulated, dry. Without yeast, fermentation will not begin.
- Place the cut top into the bottle with the neck down to form an analogue of a funnel, secure with tape or tape.
- Wrap the trap in dark rags or paper. Place in a place where mosquito activity is observed, avoiding direct sunlight.
Yeast trap A homemade trap does not lose its properties for 2 weeks. After this period, the syrup needs to be replaced. The operating principle of the device is very simple. In essence, this is a primitive mosquito trap using carbon dioxide. During the fermentation process, carbon dioxide is released, which attracts flying blood-sucking individuals. Once in a funnel, they cannot get out of it.
Fishing with sunflower oil
To build the structure, you will need a plastic container, a few tablespoons of vegetable oil, or just an empty bottle of sunflower oil. Trap manufacturing technology:
- cut off the top of the bottle;
- generously lubricate the walls of the vessel with vegetable oil;
- using a sharp object, make holes through which you can stretch the ropes;
- hang mosquito traps in places where insects accumulate, preferably under light sources: lamps, lanterns.
The concept of this trapping device is not entirely clear. Vegetable oil is not capable of acting as a bait for mosquitoes. It is likely that insects attracted by light accidentally fall into the container, and after coming into contact with vegetable oil, they temporarily lose their flight abilities. You can only check the effectiveness of a trap through your own experience.
BOTTLE MOSQUITO TRAP
To catch flying insects you don’t have to invent an unprecedented design. Usually even one plastic bottle is enough. But we decided that the design of two bottles would be much more functional and could be used without problems all summer long. We recommend taking two-liter bottles. Cut off the bottom third of the first bottle. Cut off the top third of the second bottle and insert it upside down into the first bottle. You should end up with a simple design like the one in the picture.
Also make sure that the structure can be hung in places where unwanted insects accumulate, for example, in the garden. To do this, make holes in the first bottle for hooks or thread. Although it will be possible to place the structure in another vessel if you are satisfied with this option.
