Why cover a rose for the winter?
As an experienced gardener, the question is meaningless, since any shelter is intended to protect the bushes from the negative effects of the environment. In the case of roses, this is protection of non-cold-resistant varieties from severe frosts and sudden temperature changes. But this is not the only task of a winter shelter.
Who remembers, in the article about the spring opening of roses, it is said that if the bush is opened too early, the above-ground part of the plant may die. This all happens due to the fact that prematurely “awakened” shoots will dry out the most when the ground is frozen. Some may say that this does not seem to be observed on open bushes. If the spring is “slow”, the plantings “thaw” gradually along with the ground, nothing bad will happen. If the top comes to life, but the roots do not yet, the shoots will not receive nutrition and will die. Therefore, to be safe, it is better to build a shelter. But from what?
Materials for covering roses in winter
If we talk about improvised materials stored in the pantry for many years, it could be ordinary plastic film or the same tarpaulin. It cannot be said that such protection, if used incorrectly, is of high quality, since both freezing and heating of the bushes are possible, but for lack of a better one, plus free, it is quite suitable. If we consider the store assortment, then geotextiles for roses for the winter will come in handy. But again, here too you will have to make the right choice.
Geotextiles
- this is a general concept for all materials used for gardening work. Based on structure and manufacturing technology, it is divided into agrofabric and agrofibre.
1. Agrofabric
- not suitable as a type of winter protection of plants from frost. In fact, this is approximately the same woven material from which bags for sugar or flour are made. A fabric made of interwoven even very strong fibers, but does not protect the rose from external moisture and cold, is unlikely to preserve it in winter. But this does not mean that agrofabric in the garden is completely useless. As a mulch it copes with its duties perfectly.
2. Agrofibre
– the material is non-woven, polymer, in appearance – a solid film. In fact, the canvas has very small holes, thanks to which air and moisture are not retained under the shelter, while heat is retained. Plus, some types of geotextiles have a layer that prevents condensation from forming, and the fabric itself dries quickly.
Let's take a closer look at what the industry offers modern gardeners for covering roses?
Spunbond and Lutrasil
Sometimes you can hear from flower growers that to cover roses for the winter, some prefer to use Spunbond, others prefer Lutrasil. As they say, it’s a matter of taste, only the first and second materials are, in principle, the same, but the brands, that is, the manufacturer, are different. Of all known nonwoven materials, they are the lightest; many call them “spider webs.” There seem to be no particular complaints about Spunbond, but some complain that during the early opening of the bushes, it is impossible to remove the cover from the still frozen ground without tearing it. But if we talk about opening a rose in the spring according to the rules, the soil, if anyone has forgotten, must be completely thawed. Spunbond and Lutrasil are best suited for frameless shelter.

Lumitex
Again, a type of non-woven material, but with its own characteristics. Unlike other fabrics used to protect plantings from frost, Lumitex feels denser to the touch, but at the same time softer. Suitable for frameless covering of shrubs, for sewing various shaped covers, plus greenhouses. At the same time, judging by the reviews on the forums, Lumitex is more suitable for roses with still weak shoots. The special quality of the material is the presence of an ultraviolet stabilizer. On the one hand, the “additive” increases the service life of the canvas, on the other hand, it to some extent protects plants from harmful ultraviolet radiation.
Agril and Agrospan
It is very convenient when the range of materials for shelters includes geotextiles for roses for the winter and continued for the spring. For example, Agril with Agrospan, based on their quality and characteristics, can be used not only as shelter for plantings and material for arranging greenhouses. Due to the fact that the canvases transmit more light than all others, they are very convenient for creating shade over plants in the spring and summer. Both polymers contain an ultraviolet stabilizer, which is again beneficial, since the service life of the material is not limited to one year.
Agrotex Winter shelter
Specially created protection for roses and other flowering shrubs. You can safely leave it until spring so that the roses do not “wake up” ahead of time. The technology used to create this material guarantees the plant protection from sunburn. In terms of strength, it is designed for use for 3 seasons. In addition to this special shelter, the company also has more budget-friendly options: Agrotex 42 and Agrotex 60, also suitable for winter use.

This, of course, is not all types of covering material, particularly for roses. There are others similar to those listed, but all of them, despite some differences, perform the same job - in winter they protect plantings from freezing. For shelter without a frame, use low-density fabric within 20 g/m2, for frame structures - dense 60 g/m2. Bushes are covered with white geotextiles, and the ground with black ones.
Foam rubber toy “Canary”
author:
I want to show you how I make toys from foam rubber . This is the kind of canary we will make today. Making toys from foam rubber is not difficult, but it requires patience and accuracy. I had to make this canary for a school play, and also sew a canary costume and a mask. But more on this in another master class.
To make a canary, we will need: 1cm thick foam rubber, a sharp stationery knife, “Crystal” moment glue, gouache paint.
We begin to invent and make our toy from foam rubber.
To begin with, we draw a pattern on foam rubber, 25 cm long and 16 cm wide. There should be 6 cloves, 4 cm wide and 4 cm high. Using a sharp utility knife, cut out the pattern. The cut must be strictly vertical, without tilting in one direction or another. Now, on the two opposite ends of the teeth that we will glue together, we apply “crystal” glue. We apply glue only to half the width of the cut, on the edge that will be our outer one. Apply the glue and immediately shade it so that it does not have time to be absorbed. After about five minutes have passed, we connect the two sections into a joint, so that there are no distortions. All this must be done very carefully; glue that gets on the front side can greatly spoil the appearance of your toy. It is best to practice gluing the joints of parts on pieces. In this way we glue all the teeth together, ensuring that the gluing points are as inconspicuous as possible.
Marker marks should be inside the part. We fill the middle of the ball with foam rubber scraps.
This is how you should get a ball, this will be the body of a canary. Using the same principle, we make a ball for the head, only smaller.
Glue the head and body together. And we cut out such a detail. We make the cut on an oblique.
Glue this part to the body of the canary.
Glue the edges of the part together. Glue the top cut to the head.
We have a canary's neck. Now, cut out the part for the tail. Glue this tail, the widest side to the canary's back.
Cut out a triangle like this and glue it to the bottom. Place the wide edge towards the canary's body and glue the other two edges to the edges of the tail part. Like this, we should get it from the bottom of the tail.
Use zigzag scissors to cut the tail. We cut out another part for the tail, of course you can leave it like that, but I wanted a more voluminous tail.
Glue the second part onto the tail on top and cut it again.
We make a beak from small triangles and glue it in place.
Cut out two small circles and glue them, these will be the canary’s cheeks.
Now we make the eyebrows, above the places where the canary’s eyes will be.
The turn came to the paws. We cut out these blanks and glue them to the places where the paws should be.
Ready-made winter shelters for roses
Agrofibre as a frameless shelter is convenient, but not always practical and safe. A thick and dense layer of snow on a thin sheet can break both single shoots and the entire shrub as a whole. How to solve a problem? It’s quite simple - buy something that can protect the plantings and at the same time not damage them. What do the stores offer?
Winter house
The best option among all store-bought shelters, it is quickly assembled and creates the desired microclimate. In appearance, it is a 3- or 4-sided pyramid with a height of 60 centimeters to 1 meter. The design consists of 4 sometimes 3 iron rods and one or two agrofibre caps. For reliable protection, the number of rods does not matter, but there should be two caps to create an air gap. One is put on the bush, the other on the assembled pyramidal frame. To ventilate plantings, some manufacturers make houses with opening windows. Unlike a frameless shelter, the structure not only protects the bush from frost, but also prevents breakage of shoots in snowy winters. The cap is secured with pegs through holes on the underside. You can buy collapsible rose houses for the winter in almost any specialized store, and for very little money.
Caps and cases for roses
Essentially the same house, but without a frame and in a single copy, they are put directly on the bush. The shape of the shelter can be in the form of a pyramid or straight in the form of a bag with a rounded top, up to 2 meters high. A large selection of sizes makes it possible to cover both low-growing and climbing roses. The covers can be attached in different ways: either with the help of pegs on the loops, or they are pulled together from below with braid directly on the bush. The shelter itself is not bad, but for reliability, so that the compacted snow does not crush the lying climbing rose, it is recommended to put supports inside.
Frame shelter
If you look at it, winter houses can easily be classified as frame structures. But it so happened that pyramidal structures are called houses, and those in the shape of a ball are called frame structures. What is a frame shelter? These are 2, 3 or 4 arcs, bent almost into a ring, plastic mesh and agrofibre. The arcs are buried in a circle into the ground, a mesh is laid on top, and spunbond is placed on top. The mesh is needed so that the covering material does not fall inside. In the ball, as well as in the house, the shelter should be double, that is, one cover is put on the bush, the second is covered with arcs.
What is ultimately better—to buy rose houses for the winter, a frame shelter, or simply cover the bush with canvas—is decided by location. In relatively warm climates, one covering material without any “supports” is sufficient. A harsh winter with winds will require a house or frame shelter with an air gap. Caps and covers are suitable for changeable weather. But again, with all the right recommendations, the final word belongs to the florist.
Share useful information:
The birthplace of roses is Italy. There in winter the temperature does not drop below +3 °C. Russian flower growers have to prepare flowers for wintering and protect them from frost. On sale are ready-made shelters in the form of winter houses for roses, removable covers, stakes for shelters, and industrial covering materials. To preserve flower collections, industrial products and scrap materials are used.
We build frames
When covering a rose for the winter, it is worth remembering that the plant needs air, which does not allow it to get wet or damp out. To do this, you must leave an air gap. Covering with frames allows you to maintain air space between the bush and the protection without damaging the plant, leaving a gap for air.
There are several types of frames, depending on the variety, differing in shape:
- pyramidal (cone-shaped) with a height from 0.75 m to 1 m;
- pyramids in the form of a hemisphere (spherical) large and small.
Cone-shaped ones are best used for low-growing varieties.
Large pyramids, spherical - for bush varieties.
The following materials can be used to create a frame: rods; large flowerpots or baskets; construction pallets; boards, etc.
The device requires:
- Mark the area around a bush or bent plant.
- Form a shelter dome (like a ceiling).
- In severe weather conditions, cover with insulating material, and sprinkle the bush with leaves and pine needles.
- Press the insulation along the edges with stones or bricks.
- Sometimes remove a couple of stones to allow air to flow inside.
Shelters for roses “winter house” are durable but lightweight structures that provide reliable protection from the cold (comes as a set).
- Preparing and hilling the rose with clean soil or dry peat.
- The bush is covered with the first cover.
- A frame is installed, which is also covered with a cover. The covers are fixed from below, as if with a “belt”.
- The shelter is fixed with metal pegs that come with the kit.
A simple and reliable shelter is ready. The frame method is convenient and effective when it is necessary to cover a large rose garden or flower bed. The finished frame can be covered with insulation materials in several layers.
Rose and winter hardiness
The winter hardiness of roses depends on the species. Some varieties in the middle zone do not need to be covered for the winter. In the Moscow region and other regions of the Central zone, modern hybrid forms of the Rugosa rose overwinter without problems.
Canadian park roses are distinguished by high frost resistance:
- Adelaide Hoodless;
- Prairie Joy;
- Winnipeg Parks;
- Hope of Humanity.
Climbing roses are popular among gardeners. Some varieties tolerate frosts down to -30 °C (Alchemist, Hendel), others freeze out when the thermometer drops to -7 °C. Climbing roses of continuous flowering require good shelter for the winter:
- Lagoon;
- Parade;
- Paul Scarlett.
Most hybrid tea varieties cannot withstand frosty winters; they are easier to grow in the southern regions. They require mandatory shelter if the temperature drops to -20 °C in winter. Floribunda roses are frost-resistant, but in Siberia and the Urals they are covered for the winter.
When purchasing a seedling, you must check the frost hardiness zone (USDA). There are 13 of them and each has its own minimum temperature value. It is given without taking into account shelter. If there is a covering layer, roses can withstand frosts 5-10 ° lower than indicated in the recommendation.
Purchased
Industrially produced covering materials for roses for the winter have different composition, price, and quality. Agrotextiles are sold in rolls or pieces of a certain format. Covering properties are determined by density; it is measured in g/m². The higher the value, the more reliable the protection.
Lutrasil
Lightweight durable material for long lasting use. Can be used for several seasons. Advantages of lutrasil:
- allows air to pass through;
- there is no greenhouse effect underneath;
- the canvas does not get wet.
To protect the flower garden from frost, white lutrasil with a density of 60 g/m² is best suited. Roses are covered with material folded in 2 layers.
To cover the bushes, you can use less dense material (30-50 g/m²). It is rolled into 3-4 layers. A linear meter of lutrasil costs from 25 to 50 rubles. For erect, thick shoots, they sew covers with their own hands from covering material. Flexible varieties of roses are bent to the ground, leaving a gap to the ground (10-20 cm), arches are placed, and a non-woven fabric is thrown over it. It is fixed on the sides with studs, bricks, and boards.

Geotextiles
Geotextiles have long been used in industrial rose gardens in the Moscow region. The fabric is sewn together from 3 layers, covering large areas. All varieties of roses winter well under it without hilling. Group plantings are covered in one piece. Covers are sewn for standard and climbing types of roses.
The canvas is laid on arches or supports, this allows you to distribute the snow load. Leaves are removed from the bushes and bent down. The soil is covered with mulch from a mixture of dry sawdust and horse manure.
Geotextiles are used in construction and landscape design. It consists of polymer fibers. They sell it in rolls of different widths. You can purchase ready-made geotextile covers in gardening stores. Advantages of the material:
- strength;
- durability;
- frost resistance;
- environmental friendliness;
- air and water permeability;
- no condensation.
Polyethylene film
The attitude towards film as a means of protection against frost among flower growers is not clear. There are negative reviews, but many people use it successfully. In regions with harsh winters and thick snow cover, roses winter well under the cover of plastic film. The air cushion underneath protects the roots and shoots of roses from freezing.
Spunbond
This material can be used for several seasons. It allows water and air to pass through. The cost of spunbond is not high, which makes it affordable. It is used for wrapping single standard-type bushes, stretched onto frames made of plastic (metal) arcs, bars, and willow rods.
Spunbond is used in 2-3 layers, only white in density:
Sackcloth
Jute or polypropylene sugar bags are a budget option for covering roses for the winter. They are placed on separately growing bushes. Dry leaves are poured inside, the bottom is secured with twine and covered with earth. Vegetable nets are filled with dry fallen leaves and used as insulation.
Construction Materials
Materials left over after the construction of dachas and country houses can be useful. Boards and bars are used for the construction of shields and houses. Ruberoid is laid on the ground before the shoots are placed on it. Huts for roses are built from sheets of slate. The tree trunk circles are mulched with expanded clay.
Available means
To fix the covering material, various available materials are used:
- ropes;
- leg-split;
- pegs made of wood or reinforcement;
- welding electrodes instead of staples;
- pieces of wire;
- boards;
- bricks.
Spruce spruce branches
Lapnik is not available to everyone. It is used by those who live near coniferous forests. It is not suitable for covering large rose gardens; you need a lot of it. To protect low-growing rose bushes from frost, you need to create a layer of branches at least 30 cm thick.
A shelter made of spruce branches must be covered with snow, and covering material must be pulled over it if there is no snow. You can cover roses with spruce branches when the daytime temperature drops to -6 °C.
Leaves
In autumn there are plenty of leaves in any garden. They can be used for frost protection if the trees are healthy. You can only fill rose bushes with dry material. Wet leaves provoke the development of fungal diseases in roses.
Leaves without additional shelter will fly away. To secure them around the bush, cardboard boxes, nets, fine-mesh plastic mesh, wooden boards, and other available materials are used.
Sawdust
It is better to use sawdust in combination with other types of shelters (shields, covering material). They are more suitable for regions with harsh winters, where thaws are very rare. Not all sawdust is suitable for covering a flower bed. Can not use:
- fine fraction;
- furniture production waste containing chemicals.
It is better to use softwood sawdust with a size of 10 mm or more as a covering material. They caking less, are hygroscopic, and have antiseptic properties. They insulate with sawdust in different ways:
- they fill up the tree trunk circle, put shields over the bushes, and cover them with film;
- The nets are not tightly filled with sawdust, they are placed under the lashes, arches are placed on top, and covering material is thrown on;
- in the northern regions, shields are placed like a house over low bushes, and they are covered with a thick layer of sawdust.
Humus
This organic material will not protect the above-ground part of the flower from frost. It is used to mulch the soil, it protects it from freezing and increases fertility. Humus is mixed with dry sawdust to make it looser.
Three best designs for covering roses
Covering materials alone cannot save roses from frost. They are protected from low temperatures by an air cushion, which is created using a rigid structure and covering material.
Frame method
The frame method is suitable for rose gardens in which rose bushes grow at a great distance from each other. Covering them with a solid canvas is expensive and difficult. Rods (3-5 pieces) are stuck around each plant. They are fixed on top with wire.
It turns out to be a pyramid. It is wrapped in several layers of lutrasil or another non-woven covering material is used instead. The structure is fixed to the ground with brackets at the bottom and with twine at the top.
A different type of structure is built over large rose beds. Arcs and wooden shields are used. The resulting dome (house) is covered with covering material (film, lutrasil). While it is not very cold outside, the ends of the frame tunnel are kept open; when frost sets in, they are closed.
The arcs are stuck into the ground, the lower part of the shields is fixed with pegs, the covering material is pinned to the ground with brackets made of wire, electrodes, or pressed down with boards and bricks. During thaws, the tunnels (pyramids) are ventilated so that the roots do not dry out.
Fence with embankment
Option for single planted bushes. Fences are built along their perimeter, which are filled with dry backfill:
To build a fence, stakes (rods) and mesh (plastic, metal) or scraps of thin plywood or cardboard boxes are used.
Cocoon made of lutrasil
The method is suitable for protecting single-growing standard and tall varieties of roses from frost. To build a cocoon you need a piece of lutrasil and a rope (twine). The whips are not removed from the support. The entire bush is wrapped in several layers with non-woven fabric and secured with a rope at the bottom.
Roots also provide insulation:
Air-dry shelter
There are several types of shelters so that plants can easily withstand the winter. It is worth remembering that any type of shelter implies the presence of an air gap between the rose and the shelter material.
For varieties of floribunda and hybrid tea roses, air-dry shelters are intended.
This is a type of covering for roses with your own hands - the frame of which is woven from metal wire and twigs. The frame should be cone-shaped with a height of 0.6 m. Insulation material (cardboard panels, lutrasil, glassine) is laid on top, which is attached to the support with twine. The structure is covered with plastic film to prevent the penetration of precipitation. The film from below is covered with soil for better fixation.
The frame can be replaced with containers with holes, which are covered with polyethylene when the temperature gets below zero outside.
The peculiarity of an air-dry shelter is good ventilation, which allows the bush to breathe freely. Under cover -4 0 C - stable temperature.
Reviews
Alexey, 32 years old, Moscow region
In our area, not a single winter is complete without thaws. I tried to cover the roses with spruce litter (branches, needles), the result was disastrous. The shoots often rotted away. Now I use arcs and non-woven covering material.
Svetlana, 43 years old, Moscow region
I refused the film. There's too much fuss with her. In spring you need to open it in time so that the roses do not die. I cover it with lutrasil. You can remove it in May, nothing will happen to the bushes. She also refused hilling. My plot is damp, the soil is loamy. The shoots turned black and cracks appeared on them.
Tamara, 60 years old, Kaluga
I cover the bushes with oak leaves, place crosswise arcs over them, and stretch the film. During thaws I open it slightly. There are losses, because sometimes I don’t manage to open it in time. I'm planning to switch to spunbond.

Which varieties are afraid of frost
Each variety of roses has individual wintering conditions, so it is very important to remember or determine the type of shrub growing in your front garden. The hybrid tea species are the most capricious in cold weather. This variety is distinguished by its continuous flowering until the coldest weather. The rapid development of the bush weakens the roses just before winter and has an adverse effect on its wintering . The most common varieties of hybrid tea are the following shrub plants:
- Peer Gynt;
- Dame de Kerr;
- Lucky Peace;
- Prima Ballerina and many others.
The next variety of roses are miniature and floribunda. They are more resistant to temperature changes, but they also need shelter for the winter. For a gardener, it is very important not to overdo it when it comes to frost.
The most picky varieties are the park varieties. They do not need shelter at all for the winter. For this type of shrub plant, it will be enough to do a good feeding and hilling in the fall.

Ways to cover roses for the winter
Before insulating the queen of all colors for the winter, it is necessary to do a good hilling and feeding with peat. It is not recommended to use hay or straw, as this material often leads to rotting of the root part of the bush. In addition, it is in sawdust and shavings that intensive proliferation of fungal diseases can be observed.
Only after proper hilling and feeding can you proceed to covering the plant. The material used to insulate flowers in frosty weather should be positioned in such a way that there is an air gap between it and the bush. The most common ways to preserve roses are the following:
- air-dry;
- panel;
- covering with jute bags.
Air dry method
Experts recommend the air-dry covering method for hybrid tea varieties, as well as floribunda roses. This method provides the bushes with a stable temperature and good ventilation. This option does not require large expenses. In order to know how to properly cover roses for the winter, you need to read the detailed instructions.
An air-dry shelter must be reliable and strong to withstand any weather conditions. First of all, the gardener needs to build a frame of metal arcs. This will not be difficult to do, because its technology matches the design of country greenhouses. Next, you need to stretch an insulating material onto this frame , for which you can use the following options:
- lutrasil;
- glassine;
- agrofibre;
- cardboard;
- film, etc.
The edges of the created shelter should be properly secured so that even a strong wind cannot be thrown back and, moreover, destroy the structure.
Shield shelter
The shield method of covering is ideally used only for some varieties of climbing roses. To use this method, the gardener must tie each shrub plant into a bundle and carefully bend all its branches to one side. To protect flowers from rodents, it is necessary to spread coniferous spruce branches (pine or spruce) on the ground .
Using a small piece of metal arc, you need to pin the bush as close to the ground as possible. After securely fixing the roses, wooden shields should be installed on both sides of the plant. They are fastened in such a way that a triangle is formed as a result.
The length of the structure corresponds to the branches of the bush, and its width should be no more than 85 cm. The finished shield shelter must be covered with polyethylene, after which the edges should be well covered with earth. On warm sunny days, the ends of the structure can be opened for ventilation.
Use of jute bags
The method with jute bags can be successfully applied to standard varieties. People who have such shrub plants growing on their property should take care of their wintering. To preserve its beauty until spring comes, you need to take a regular jute bag and remove the bottom of it. This form of cloth should be placed on the crown of standard roses, and then tied tightly with a reliable thread at the beginning of the growth of the branches of the bush.
All empty space in the bag must be filled with dry leaves or coniferous spruce branches, and the top must be tied. The trunk of the standard plant also needs to be well wrapped in burlap.
Denim applique
Fabric applique from jeans can be done not only for the purpose of repairing worn trousers or skirts. A painting, the elements of which are made from a piece of unnecessary denim, will decorate the interior in an original way.
A fairly rough material looks great against something as common as bare cork. To create additional elements of the denim pattern, you can take rope twines or simply add them with a marker.
Flowers are the most common subject when making various crafts. The popularity of this image is explained by the variety of options for the complexity of the work. Both preschoolers and adults will find suitable production methods for themselves. All this also applies to the application of beautiful and bright colors from fabric.
For those who want to learn the basics of making fabric flower appliqués, this article will provide several step-by-step master classes describing various techniques.
Shelter of roses in Belarus
As in many countries of the world, covering roses for the winter in Belarus is carried out in one of three ways. The first method is very successful here. No less popular in the republic is the shield covering of shrub plants , which is often used for several bushes growing in one row. Many experienced gardeners in Belarus note that during the severe frosts of 2005-2006 they used only the air-dry method. This shelter helped the roses survive at very low thermometer readings.
Buds made of tissue flagella
This master class is one of the simplest possible options for creating flowers from fabric. You don’t have to spend a lot of time and effort on it, so any beginner in the world of needlework can create an interesting piece for appliqué or an accessory for clothing.
- Take the fabric and cut it into long strips.
- Sew one end of the ribbon securely with thread to the garment or applique base. Now begin to twist the fabric into a rope and wrap it around the attached tip, forming a round flower. As soon as the rope ends, take a new strip and sew its end to the previous one, and then begin twisting another rope.
- When the flower is formed, finish the work by hiding the tip of the fabric behind the flagella from the previous circle. The core is decorated at the request of the needleworker and the needlewoman; you can sew a beautiful bead into the center of the bud
.
