Head wreath “Apple blossom” (kanzashi). Wreath of roses on the head Wreath of ribbons on the head

An integral part of Ukrainian national clothing is a wreath. It turns out that this is not just a beautiful decoration. Since ancient times, the wreath has served its owner as a talisman against evil spirits. Today's beauties hardly believe in the magical properties of the accessory and use it only to create a unique image. The decoration can be purchased in a store, or you can make a Ukrainian wreath with your own hands, while observing all national beliefs, and turn it into your personal amulet. This will be discussed in this article.

Weaving rules

Weaving a wreath is an entire art that Ukrainian girls have learned since childhood. The mother put the very first wreath on the girl’s head when she was three years old. Every year the amulet was updated, new elements were added. Traditionally, the wreath consists of twelve types of flowers. Each flower not only occupied its place, but had a certain meaning. Thus, immortelle stood guard over health, chamomile symbolized innocence, cornflower spoke of fidelity, viburnum served as a symbol of beauty. There are about seventy options for creating wreaths. They were woven for good luck, against the evil eye, to attract the opposite sex, for various rituals.

Any wreath looks more colorful and picturesque with ribbons. The Ukrainian wreath necessarily involved weaving ribbons in a strict color sequence. Each tape had a specific purpose. Let's consider their interpretation:

  • started weaving from the middle. The first ribbon served as a symbol of Mother Earth and corresponded to the color brown;
  • stripes of a yellow tint were added along the edges of the first ribbon, personifying the warm sun;
  • then there were green stripes, talking about the beauty and young age of the hostess;
  • blue symbolized clear sky, living water;
  • purple ribbons symbolized prudence;
  • pink meant the sincerity and unfeignedness of a virgin.

The length of the ribbons depended on the length of the braid of the owner of the jewelry.

Blue Christmas wreath

You will need tools and materials:

  • foam mold in the form of a wreath;
  • ribbons made of corduroy, satin and taffeta;
  • floral wire;
  • floral pins;
  • small pearl-white Christmas balls;
  • glue gun or glue stick.

1. Cut strips of corduroy, satin and taffeta ribbon to the desired size. We wrap them in rings and collect several rings on a floral pin, securing them with floral wire.

2. Cover the surface of the foam wreath with prepared ribbons, alternating different types, colors and heights to make the composition more voluminous and cheerful.

3. Place the Christmas balls between the loops of the ribbons and glue them with a glue gun.

4. Make a hanging bow by taking a longer piece of corduroy ribbon. Form rings and glue them in place

5. We put the bow on a floral pin and secure it with floral wire. Attach it to the bottom of the finished wreath. We hang the wreath on the wall.

DIY poppy for a wreath

We begin making a kanzashi hoop in the Ukrainian style by assembling poppies. For them you will need a scarlet ribbon 5 cm wide. We make cardboard blanks for the petals in two sizes: 4.5 × 5.5 cm with a base of 3 cm and 4 × 4.5 cm with a base of 2 cm. Then we make 10 large and 10 small petals per flower. We scorch the edges with a lighter or a candle, giving the petals volume and bending them in different directions to make them uneven, like real poppies.

Cut out a circle of felt with a diameter of 4 cm and glue a row of large petals onto it using a gun. Next, glue the smaller petals. Then we decorate the center of the flower by cutting the blanks of black stamens in half. You will need five of these halves. We glue them in a circle in the center of the bud. Now we cut out a 5x5 circle from a 5 cm wide ribbon and assemble it along the edge with a thread.

We tighten the fabric, placing a piece of padding polyester in the center, and tie the ends of the thread. This will be the core of the flower. All that remains is to sew it from the middle to the edges in a circle, dividing it into several segments, and glue it. Mac is ready. You can use the second option for making this flower: sew the petals together with thread, distributing them in a checkerboard pattern, and make the stamens from nylon thread.

Satin ribbon wreath

You will need:

  • several satin ribbons;
  • scissors;
  • rhinestones or beads for decoration;
  • cotton wool or fabric for wrapping the wreath;
  • safety pins.
  1. We take a satin ribbon about 5 cm wide, cut it into small strips and diagonally so as to get the correct diamond shape.
  2. After this, we collect a little in the middle as shown in the photo.

3. We tie three elements together in this way, we get a beautiful flower, in the middle of which we insert several pearls, beads or rhinestones.

4. We begin making leaves for the wreath, which are also made from satin ribbons, but narrower. To do this, cut a piece of the tape, fold it in a “corner”, then fold it again, but along a line from the middle of the first bend and down to the inner corner, which is formed by the edges of the tape. At the bottom of the leaf we also collect it into folds.

5. The DIY wreath is almost ready. All that remains is to make a rim for it, which can be wrapped with cotton wool and additional ribbons or fabric on top, so that there is somewhere to attach leaves and flowers. Now all that remains is to assemble the wreath using safety pins.

DIY Ukrainian wreath

For any holiday or just on summer days, you can make a special wreath that will decorate your head with its bright flowers. Ukrainian is considered one of the best types of wreaths, since you can use different materials to create it. To make it yourself, you need to find out what tools and auxiliary items are needed.

Do-it-yourself Ukrainian wreath: master class on how to make it on your head

What can you make a Ukrainian wreath from with your own hands?

The most authentic Ukrainian wreaths are made from fresh flowers, but it is worth noting that such decorations will not last long.

For a wreath, different flowers can be used, ranging from wild ones to aquatic ones. But for an artificial wreath, you can make flowers with your own hands.

In order to make a wreath that will serve you for a long time, you need to choose a material from which you can make flowers yourself.

A wreath can be made on the head, but it can also be made on the hand, depending on the desire and the occasion for which this decoration is needed. There are wreaths made from artificial flowers on sale, but many people don’t like them. Therefore, the option of making a wreath yourself may seem more successful than buying a ready-made one.

Do-it-yourself Ukrainian wreath: master class on how to make it on your head

A hand wreath should be small in size, but at the same time have all the components that a large wreath has. For example, the most important role in a wreath is played by a poppy or sunflower, so they need to be reproduced from fabric in a small size.

But a regular wreath will take a lot of time, since creating flowers is a labor-intensive and lengthy process.

The most beautiful artificial wreath is considered to be the one made from satin ribbons. We can agree that satin ribbons are quite bright and lend themselves well to sewing, so making flowers from them will be easy. Ribbons can be used in different colors, but their size should be large so that it is enough for all elements of the floral decoration.

Each flower used in the wreath symbolizes something very important, for example, the cornflower is a symbol of youth and beauty, and the red poppy is a symbol of strong feelings. Therefore, all 12 colors that are used in the wreath are woven into it for a reason. By wearing such a wreath on the night of Ivan Kupala, a girl calls upon herself all the best feelings and emotions.

Very often, Ukrainian wreaths are used at matinees or holidays in the garden or school. Therefore, the wreath is more popular for children than for adults. It must be remembered that when making a wreath, all parameters of the head are taken into account. This is especially true for wreaths on a hoop, since to make a children's wreath you will need a small hoop, and for an adult - a larger one.

Do-it-yourself Ukrainian wreath: master class on how to make it on your head

After watching one master class, it will become clear what the technique of making a wreath is. And then wreaths can be made without any prompts. And most likely, some girls will understand that creating your own artificial wreath is much simpler than combining fresh flowers into such a decoration.

The Ukrainian wreath can be of different sizes, so the flowers for it can be both large and small. But since the flowers will be attached to the hoop, they should be small in size. Satin flowers are always made the same way, only the colors of the ribbons and the size of the flowers differ.

Red poppy

A red poppy can be made from one strip of satin. To do this you will need a red ribbon about 5 cm wide and 60 cm long. Along the entire length you need to sew with thread at a distance of 10 cm from each other, then tighten the thread. The stamens are glued into the middle of the poppy, with beads at the ends.

White chamomile

Next, it will be easiest to make a chamomile; for this you will have to take a ribbon 1.5 cm wide and cut 9-11 pieces.

Each piece of tape must be bent into a corner so that the edges touch and a small gap is formed in the middle. You need to melt the ends a little over the fire so that they stick together.

In total, you will need 9-11 petals, which are eventually sewn together with thread and pulled into a circle, and a yellow bead is glued to the center.

By holding each flower petal on the fire, a more natural curve of the petal is formed, and the flower will have a natural appearance.

The calendula flower is made according to the principle of chamomile, but the shape of the petals is different.

So, to create a calendula you need a yellow ribbon, the size of each petal should be no more than 1 cm, and after folding each piece in half, you need to bend the edges on top to form a triangle, and at the end of the petal you need to twist the edges a little and hold it over the fire so that the petals become natural curve. Having collected all the petals in a circle, you can glue the stamens to the center.

In principle, each flower for a wreath is made using the same technique, only the kanzashi wreath differs in the size of its flowers; for it you need to make large and voluminous flowers.

In order to see how to make such a wreath and what it looks like, you can look at the photo.

Each wreath will look beautiful with ribbons that simply hang down, the main thing is that thin ribbons are used for a small wreath, and wide ones for a large one.

Christmas wreath made of colorful ribbons

We will need:

  • ribbons of different colors,
  • wire for the base or thick cardboard,
  • scissors.

For the base, we take thick wire or cut out a ring from thick cardboard. Now you need to make as many bows as possible from multi-colored ribbons. Then we place the bows on the wire tightly to each other, carefully straighten their edges, when the circle is completely filled with them - our Christmas wreath is ready!

I would like to add that if you do not have ribbons, you can cut all kinds of shreds into strips. These stripes will perfectly replace satin ribbons for us :o)

Making flowers

Ready-made artificial flowers do not always look pretty. You can solve this problem by forming flowers from satin ribbons. Let's see how traditional plants are made: poppy, chamomile.

  • poppy. Take a wide red ribbon. Cut 10-11 pieces of it with dimensions of 6*6 cm. Cut out a shape from each piece, as shown in the photo:

Over the candle, melt the edges as quickly as possible. This step will give the petals a natural shape.

Cut a circle from the same tape. Glue the first row of petals onto the circle, then the second.

The stamens are made from black threads. To do this, you will need to make about 50 turns of thread around your palm, remove it, tie it in the middle, and cut the ends.

Coat the ends with glue and sprinkle semolina on top. Make a box from green ribbon, stuffed with padding polyester and tied with thread. See photo:

Glue the stamens into the middle of the poppy and place the box on top.

The technique of creating such flowers originated in the Land of the Rising Sun and was called kanzashi.

  • chamomile. Cut 10 pieces 6.5 cm long from a narrow ribbon. Bend the ribbon at an angle, with the ends facing each other. Treat with a candle.

Sew the petals together. Glue yellow threads and a bead folded in a spiral into the center.

Now you know a lot about weaving the national Ukrainian wreath. Bright wreaths will perfectly complement a summer outfit. Create several decorations using different flowers, ribbons for everyday wear as well as for special occasions. Your image will attract attention and will remain in memory for a long time as something beautiful and original.

Original Christmas wreath made of scraps.

And if you don’t want to bother with cutting strips, then you can make a wreath like this from whole shreds.

We collect scraps available. Let’s come up with some color scheme (it doesn’t have to be strictly red, green, i.e. “New Year’s” colors). We cut out the circles (we determine the number and diameter ourselves, again to our taste). My circles turned out to be 10 cm in diameter.

Then, we tighten the thread to create a gather around the edge, fill the resulting “bag” with some kind of filler, and we get a nice “bun”.

When all the “balls” are assembled, take a thick needle and strong thread (I used “Iris” for this purpose) and begin to string these balls onto the thread. We tie the ends of the thread with a knot. And we get this design.

We decorate the wreath with ribbons and make a loop so that it can be hung. That's all! A very cute, original Christmas wreath is ready!

Thematic wreath made of ribbons: master class with photos

The master class will help you make a themed wreath from ribbons easily and simply, resulting in an original decoration for the interior.

Materials:

  • foam base;
  • decorative tape in the form of braid with inscriptions;
  • decorative ribbon braid in the form of a centimeter;
  • a set of decorative buttons (sewing accessories);
  • chip board (cardboard cutout) in the form of a sewing machine;
  • acrylic paints black and dark brown;
  • paint brush;
  • glue gun;
  • wire cutters

Progress

  1. Decorate the foam base with braid with inscriptions, carefully secure the tip of the braid with hot glue.
  2. Remove the “ears” from the buttons using wire cutters.
  3. Paint the cardboard cutout of the sewing machine with black acrylic paint on both sides and let the paint dry. Acrylic paint dries very quickly and has virtually no odor. Then take a little brown paint with a sponge, blot off the excess paint and apply the paint to the workpiece with light “blotting” movements, creating a “scuffed” effect.
  4. Make a bow from measuring tape and glue it to the base with hot glue.
  5. Glue a painted sewing machine die cut and decorative sewing supplies on top of the tape.
  6. Make a pendant from the braid that was used to decorate the base.

Traditions

There are many ancient traditions associated with a wreath of flowers on the head, some of which have survived to this day.

For example, in ancient times, a girl presented a wreath woven with her own hands to her beloved as a sign of matchmaking and fidelity. Today this tradition has grown into the exchange of rings between newlyweds.

Today the bride throws a bouquet to her unmarried bridesmaids at a wedding, but previously it was a wreath that was thrown; whoever catches it will be the first to get married.

The wreath played an important role in the relationship between a guy and a girl

Often in a Ukrainian village one could see a wreath on the doors of a hut; it was believed that for a whole year it protected the whole family from evil and troubles, and also brought health to the house. In ancient times, there were many variations of wreaths. One of the most popular was considered a wreath of devotion; it was based on cornflower and lovage. By the way, the color combination in this wreath is blue cornflower and yellow lovage.

The wreath was given one of the key roles on the holiday of Ivan Kupala

Ribbons in a Ukrainian wreath

In addition to flowers, the Ukrainian wreath was always decorated with multi-colored satin ribbons. Moreover, the choice of one color or another was not random; there were strict traditions. From an early age, girls learned the art of weaving ribbons correctly and understanding what a particular color means.

Plus, the ribbons perfectly complement the appearance of the wreath.

The girls wove the first ribbon in the middle of the wreath. It was always light brown in color, which personified the fertile nurse-earth. Yellow ribbons were woven on both sides of the first - the personification of the sun and warmth.

Behind them were woven bright green ones, which were a symbol of girlish youth and beauty, and followed by blue ribbons - the personification of a clear sky. It was believed that they gave vitality and health to the girl.

After the blue ones, purple ribbons were woven in - the personification of wisdom, pink and crimson, symbolizing wealth and sincerity.

The meaning of ribbons in the Ukrainian wreath

There is a belief that the ribbons were supposed to protect against the evil eye. The length of the ribbons in the head wreath should not be arbitrary, but measured strictly according to the length of the girl’s braid. If a girl wove a blue ribbon, it meant that she was an orphan. People treated the girl with bread, welcomed her in every possible way and tried to show her gifts.

In modern wreaths, ribbons play rather a decorative role.

Types of wreaths

Ethnographers count 75 types of wreaths. They can be age-related, ritual, ritual, magical, thematic.

Thematic

  • The orphan girl wove mostly blue ribbons into the wreath. Meeting such a child, people gave her gifts, bread, money, clothes, fabrics. Childless couples could offer her to become their daughter.
  • After the birth of her first child, the woman made a wreath of roses, framing it with green leaves. Then everyone who met her wished her happiness and health for the child.

Age

  • At the age of 3, the girl put on her first wreath. Flowers of marigold, forget-me-nots, chamomile, and periwinkle were woven into it. It was believed that each flower prevented the baby from certain ailments, such as headaches, vision and heart problems, and made the mind clear and thoughts pure.
  • The four-year-old girl's wreath consisted of immortelle, apple leaves and wild rosemary. For a six-year-old girl, poppy and cornflower were woven into a wreath for good sleep and mind. A seven-year-old girl wore a wreath of 7 different flowers, plus apple blossom. The girl wore a chamomile wreath with some cornflowers.

Magic group of wreaths

  • Wreath of love. Woven for 13-year-old girls and worn until marriage. The base was chamomile (youth, kindness and tenderness), between the daisies were cherry and apple blossom, above the forehead was a bunch of viburnum and tendrils of hops, so that those around her would know that in addition to beauty, the girl had a clear mind.
  • A wreath of hope from field poppies was woven for the indecisive chosen ones.
  • Wreath of devotion: the base was cornflowers, and between them – lovage. Based on the legend of devotion and love, a mother’s blessing arose: “God grant you devotion and consent, like Cornflower and Lubistka.”
  • A wreath of separation made of primrose (instability) and heather (loneliness) was given to men going to work or war.

Ritual wreaths

  • A periwinkle wedding wreath was given to the bride or groom during matchmaking as a symbol of agreement. Wreaths were kept behind icons in families, sewn into pillows, and hung under a ceiling beam for a strong marriage. Later, rings began to play this role.
  • A harvest wreath, woven from spikelets on the last day of the harvest, decorated with wildflowers and ribbons, was placed on the head of the best worker, and she kept it until the next sowing season. In this way, the villagers preserved and passed on the strength of the grain to the next harvest.
  • They used wreaths to tell fortunes about Ivan Kupala - every unmarried girl floated a wreath, and by the way it floated, they read the future. If the wreath floats - the girl will become a wife this year, stops near the shore - there will be no betrothed for another year, and if she drowns - quick death.
  • They also made spells on wreaths and performed love spells.

Currently, flower wreaths are becoming popular again, although they no longer carry any deep subtext, except that a girl in a wreath is an image of youth, tenderness, and romance. You can easily and simply make a wreath on your head with your own hands.

  • For large-scale work, it is cheaper to use acrylic paint purchased at a regular hardware store.
  • To protect the surface of a painted wooden bow, you can additionally coat it with acrylic varnish, glossy or matte. This varnish is also odorless and dries quickly.

Ukrainian kanzashi wreath

To all kanzashi lovers. You should definitely try to make a wreath in Ukrainian style with your own hands. This stunning accessory is sure to attract admiring glances.

To create such a wreath, take a thick double sheet of several layers and cut out a piece that will become the base for the wreath, as in the photo.

We take green ribbons and, based on the prepared template, begin to burn out the leaves. We make another type of leaves for a wreath from several types of ribbons (satin and brocade). The tape is folded in half. It is pressed with a ruler and cut with a soldering iron. Next, using a glue gun, you need to fix the leaves, as in the photo. The leaves made from the template are given a special shape using a candle and tweezers.

We make the spikelets for the wreath from satin and brocade ribbon. These elements are formed on the basis of the double sharp petals of kanzashi. Having made all the blanks, you need to glue the leaves together. Use a glue gun for this. Glue the leaves to the underside of the spikelets.

Next we make poppies from red ribbon. First, we cut the tape into squares, and then cut out a drop-shaped part from them. The edges of the petals must be singed. After this, we proceed to stitching together the layers of petals. The layers are formed sequentially by superimposing one on top of the other, as in the photo. The creation of layers begins with wide petals, gradually adding smaller details. The poppy core is sewn on using a needle-forward seam and slightly tightened.

The stamens are made from nylon threads, the ends of which are coated with glue and dipped in semolina.

To create the core, take padding polyester and square elements made of green satin ribbon. We make circles out of them. Next, you need to singe the edges and sew the circle with a “forward needle” seam. The padding polyester is inserted inside this element and the thread is tightened. You should get a green ball, as in the photo. Using thread, all that remains is to make the center characteristic of a poppy.

With small leaves and flowers, it looks gentle and feminine, and if you wear it under a romantic outfit, decorate your long curls with it, and complement it with modest makeup, then you are guaranteed the image of a spring girl. This lesson offers an easy master class on how to create a wreath

To make a hand-made wreath you will need:

  • - thick wire about 60 cm long;
  • - thin wire about 3 mm in diameter;
  • - brown or dark green tape;
  • — double-sided yellow stamens, 45 pieces, intended for 15 flowers;
  • — double-sided green stamens (buds) 20 pieces;
  • - green satin ribbon about 7-12 pieces measuring 2.5*3.5 cm;
  • — soft pink satin ribbon 75 pieces measuring 2.5*2.5 cm (5 pieces per flower);
  • - green ribbon measuring 1.2*50 cm for a bow at the back;
  • - scissors, lighter, glue gun, knife (for forming veins on leaves).

Stages of creating a kanzashi wreath

1. The proposed wreath will be assembled from twigs, the basis of which will be thin wire. Collect the stamens with yellow heads into bunches. Attach the resulting bundles to the wire and wrap the tape tightly on top. This way you will get a branch of the right size. For each branch, use 3 double-sided stamens. In the future, they will become the centers of the flowers. The main thing is to wind the tape tightly so that there are no gaps and the branches are strong.

2. Cut out squares with a side of 2.5 cm from a soft pink ribbon. Make petal droplets from each square. Singe the edges of the resulting blanks to get rid of protruding threads. The petals for apple blossom flowers are very simple, so the main thing when making them is to keep the exact dimensions and work carefully with the lighter. Collect flowers from 5 petals around the circumference. When scorching the satin with a lighter, do not linger in one place for a long time, move quickly along the cut edge, otherwise the satin will melt and you will end up with a wavy edge.

3. Thread the branches into the central hole of the flower and pull through so that the bouquet of stamens remains in the center. If necessary, add a dab of glue to keep the flowers in place.

4. Make 12 identical branches.

5. Use thin wire, stamens with green heads and tape to make a second type of twig. Wrap the stamens on the wire, but do not initially collect them in a bunch, but distribute them along the entire length. These will be branches with buds.

6. Cut oval leaves from green rectangular pieces of satin ribbon. Also singe the edges carefully and quickly.

7. Heat the metal blade of the knife. Using hot metal, create a relief of veins on each leaf. Press the blade onto the sheet for a moment to create streaks. Prepare a wire wrapped with tape for attaching with leaves.

8. Glue a leaf to each branch.

9. Start attaching the prepared branches to the base (thick wire) using tape.

10. When filling the main wire, alternate parts: twigs with flowers, leaves and buds.

11. Form a wreath. Secure the ends of the wire with a thin green ribbon, tying it in a bow. Pre-measure the diameter of your head to create an accessory of the desired circumference.

A wonderful wreath symbolizing the onset of spring is ready. This accessory will suit a spring party, a romantic summer look, or simply decorate a young girl’s hair. Instead of a pink ribbon, you can use accessories of a different color, choosing the shade as you wish.
