How to make a miter saw with your own hands?

Making a tool from a hand-held circular saw

The design is simple and can be made at home. The body of the sawing machine is assembled from wood or metal. A base is constructed from sheets of plywood (chipboard), on which a vertical stand is installed, having previously cut holes in it for attaching the circular. The pendulum-type mechanism is made from a board and is fixed to the support using a long bolt.

Having prepared a corner or metal rod, it is screwed on top of the pendulum, trying to make the end protrude. Take the spring. One side of it is secured to the back of the corner, and the other to the vertical post. The tension is selected experimentally, but it should be sufficient to freely hold the hand-held circular saw suspended.

Having disconnected the handle from the tool, it is secured to the pendulum in the prepared hole. The cables are laid in the grooves provided for this purpose and the voltage is connected. A small slot is made in the tabletop and the side stops are attached to it at right angles. If they are made rotary, then workpieces can be cut at a given angle

. The circular saw has been assembled, all that remains is to test it in action. Using available drawings, it is easy to make any, even more complex, tool

Selecting, setting up and repairing a miter saw

The miter (miter) saw is made by some power tool companies. It is used in everyday life and by specialists. Therefore, the device has many varieties, differing in functionality, dimensions, power and price. When choosing a tool for yourself, a client is guided by his needs and abilities. Some people need a trimmer for infrequent use. For example, to carry out renovations in an apartment, we need to produce wooden doors and windows in a different country house. And someone uses a saw every day at the workplace. Focusing on all these requirements, a tool is selected for household or professional needs.

Purpose and use of miter saws

To manually cut the material at an angle and evenly, you need to put a lot of effort and use special devices. To make this process easier, electronic miter saws were invented. They allow you to cut workpieces exactly at the required angle and inclination. In other words, of course, changing the angle both in the horizontal and vertical planes. The tool has found application among installers, carpenters and finishers. Miter saws are used for the production of furniture, doors, baseboards, windows, flooring and much more. The tool can be used to cut not only wood, but also plastic and iron corners and pipes.

with a miter saw is comfortable, simple and fast.

Tool structure

The main elements of a miter saw:

  1. Saw blade with protective cover.
  2. Handle with start button.
  3. Engine.
  4. Longitudinal stop.
  5. Bed.
  6. Ruler.

Types of miter saws, what are their differences

Our client is left with miter saws divided into two types:

    ordinary. They only have miter saw functions;

Miter saws are:

  • household The materials they are made from are not strong enough. Therefore, such devices are not suitable for long-term daily use;
  • prof. They have improved technical properties and more than just multifunctional abilities. Of course, work hard every day.

Main aspects of choice

Before you visit the store and consult with sellers, familiarize yourself with the parameters that you should rely on when purchasing a tool. Then you can make the right decision.

  • power. Affects productivity and speed. As it increases, the weight and price of the instrument increases. Household trimmers consume less energy than professional ones;
  • disk size. The depth and speed of the cut depends on it. Also find out whether replacement discs for your chosen tool model are available for free sale;
  • characteristics of the cut. Angle, width and depth. The saw should cut the workpiece at the angle required for your purposes, preferably in both directions. The manufacturer also shows the highest cutting depth when working at an angle of 45 and 90 degrees to the surface. The depth of cut feature is important. It is used when selecting grooves and processing workpieces according to thickness;

Metabo KS 216 M Lasercut miter saw with 1350 W power

I was choosing between Makita. Metaba has a more convenient working handle and a laser. True, you need to get used to the laser, but it’s finely tuned. I put a clean disc on aluminum and used it to saw and pieces of wood. I'm happy, I recommend it.

Miter saw Makita LS0714 power 1010 W

The device is made very well, there are no backlashes. I didn’t regret a single ruble. It is generally transported without much effort in a passenger car; it can be carried in one hand. I saw her: laminate, door frame trim, lining, plastic, plinth, moldings, it coordinates with the surrounding with a bang if only there was a table on top

DeWALT DW713 1600W Miter Saw

A decent saw for the price of 12,300 rubles, I bought it at a discount price. I was choosing between Boches, but decided against this model. It’s just that in Boches the cost often increases due to the accessories included here (a clamp, a rod supporting long parts, a laser sight). I like the weight, it’s average, I won’t say that it’s light, but I don’t think this device will be light, it inspires confidence. It was made of very high quality, I really liked the angle adjustment, easy and without any torsion, just like the competitors. Large work surface. I was chasing a backlit model, and I’ll tell you it was worth it! The first day I worked late just outside, so I actually didn’t do any additional lighting for myself, because... the cutting line was always visible! I recommend XPS specifically. Simply an excellent original disc with large teeth! I immediately bought a Bosch disc for myself, for clean cutting of laminate rolled up in plastic, and so it lost cleanly to its original one! (I only had to use it to cut aluminum, which it did just fine).

without good tools.

It smells very much like cheap Chinese stuff, unfortunately I bought it at Makita online with bonuses for 26 thousand rubles (sanctions, damn it). Visually, the production quality of the aluminum body of the broaching mechanism is low (cast, processed with a large ratfil and painted, the paint does not adhere well, peels off on a brand new tool). The turntable is smooth and milled, but where it is painted it’s the same story. The angles and angles were not set to 0, just like the laser (I had to do it myself, it took about 15 minutes). The scales for setting angles are written AND STICKED, just like on the “rioba”. Some stickers come off when new, out of the box. Not compact - it takes up more than just a meter (1080mm) of space when transported.

Tool setup and adjustment

It doesn’t matter what kind of saw it is, regardless of the company’s model, it needs preparatory tuning. This is like the first technical service. The main thing that is required from a saw is the accuracy of the angle at an angle and with a turn. Every saw has an option to modify, improve and increase its class. Remove from the tool what remains for our client to do are additions and extensions, for example, clamps. You need a scalpel or a small knife with a rigid blade. Casting is accompanied by the formation of flash, which must be cut off if it interferes with maintenance.

Side stop

  1. Raise the saw unit. Remove the side stop.
  2. In some saws it does not have a right angle with the frame. The emphasis is in contact with the base at 2 points. The bases of these points must be vertical to the surface. If there is no right angle due to an uneven paint layer or a burr, sand the base surfaces. First, cut off the flash, if there is any.

Rotation fixation unit

Miter saws have two types of limbs. On one, the ruler is a removable element. On the other, it is not dismantled, and the dial itself has slots for often used angles.

The fixing rod has a conical sharpening and fits slightly into the slots of the dial.

  1. Lift up the locking button. The rod will release.

How to fix a random angle

There are situations when it is necessary to set an angle that differs by 1–2 degrees from a fixed value. In the process of setting such an angle, a breakdown occurs and a value is fixed that we do not need. To prevent this from happening, you need to tighten the locking knob while pressing the button.

Setting an angle of 90 degrees in the horizontal plane

In most cases, users apply a square to the disk and base. This is a bad method for three reasons:

  • during the installation of the equipment, debris could get in and the equipment was installed unevenly;
  • the disk itself turned out to be deformed;
  • when we apply an angle to the equipment, it is enough to have a light load so that the disk sways slightly.

Prepare a piece of plywood, a narrow strip, a 10 mm wide strip and double-sided tape.

  1. Take a piece of plywood and secure it to the base with double-sided tape at three points.
  2. Place a narrow strip between the board and the side support. It creates a distance so that you can later release the screws and move the stop in the appropriate direction.
  3. Make a control cut. You will have to set an angle .
  4. Remove the rack and loosen the stop screws.
  5. To position the square evenly relative to the cutting strip, use a strip about 10 mm wide.
  6. Press it against the plywood, and then press the square against it.

Setting other angles

Setting for bevel cutting

  1. Take the block and place it vertically. Make a cut. Check the alignment of the parts.

Possible malfunctions and repairs

Let's look at common faults.

Discrepancy of surfaces in the side stop

The surfaces of the side stop converge at some angle or are placed in different planes. This greatly influences the cutting accuracy. When cutting from the right or left, a different result comes out.

    Remove the stop. Prepare a narrow piece of getinax. Its surface should be smooth and even.

Sawing accuracy is impaired

It is necessary to identify a curved element: a disk or a flange. This operation cannot be created by starting the motor from the network. Firstly, you risk serious injury; if the engine is running, the myth method does not work.

  1. Turn off the saw. Raise the protective cover.
  2. Take a marker and place it on the side of the disk. Hold the marker straight. Rotate the disc until it reaches a full revolution.
  3. Lock the spindle and loosen the disc. Rotate 180 degrees. Tighten it.
  4. Take a marker of a different color and repeat drawing a circle next to the previous one.
  5. Look where the half rings are located. If they are on the same part of the disk, it means it is crooked. Replace the disk with a new one. If the half rings are on the opposite sides, then there is a problem with the flange.
  6. Remove the disc and flange. A flange is a support washer that is attached to the shaft along with the disk. The supporting and landing planes must be parallel. The supporting area is formed by turning.

Motor and gearbox repair

The following reasons indicate the presence of breakdowns in the engine in another gearbox:

  • The disk does not spin, but the engine works;
  • the smell of burning;
  • sparking in the motor area;
  • the saw does not gain power;
  • the tool is unstable.

If you have at least one book from these signs, start analyzing it.

    Unscrew the screws securing the motor housing.

How to make an electronic miter saw yourself

Miter sawing is performed using various methods. Let's look at options with a grinder and a manual circular saw.

From the Bulgarian

  1. Remove the disc and additional handle from the grinder. Cut a sheet for the frame from a wooden or iron sheet. Metal is more suitable for an angle grinder. Weld a 3030 mm pipe on both sides. Make an extension for the bed of the same width. Weld a 2525 mm pipe to it and stick it into the first pipe.

For beauty, you can paint the table and the rotary unit.

Video: homemade miter saw from an angle grinder

From a manual circular saw

  1. Under the base, take a sheet of chipboard 10 mm wide. Make coasters. Calculate the height based on the circular saw blade.
  2. Screw the guides from the duralumin corner.
  3. Make a bed from the same chipboard in a semicircle. Radius based on the length of the base. The rotating bed allows you to cut at an angle.

Workbench for the saw: marking the drawing, installing the trim

  1. Make a stable table from an iron frame with a tabletop 40-50mm wide.
  2. From one end to the other in the center, measure the area that the saw will occupy. In the free space, install a platform as high as the base of the saw.

Buy a miter saw according to your needs. Don't bother with the settings. This process is very clear and narrow. Approach him reverently. Then you will have a functional and long-lasting tool.

A homemade workbench is the basis for convenient work

For ease of work, you should make a cross-cutting machine. It is advisable to have a mobile design if you have to move it to another place or directly to the construction site. Therefore, the frame is made collapsible, for which the tabletop is fastened to the legs using self-tapping screws.

To make a workbench, you must perform the following operations:

  • Prepare the top frame. It is assembled from wooden beams measuring 40x40. Legs made of a similar material are screwed on with self-tapping screws and spacers are installed for greater stability. Or the joints are reinforced with metal corners.
  • The tabletop is made from boards. Its width should be 10 cm greater than the length of the miter saw, and its length should be equal to the width multiplied by 3.
  • Taking sheets of plywood (chipboard, MDF), prepare and secure improvised tables, trying to position their surface on the same level with the rotating mechanism.
  • Install equipment for cutting ends.

Since it is difficult to make a high-quality rotating device at home, they take it ready-made.

Such wood trimming will be in demand in your workshop or when carrying out various construction works in which woodworking is indispensable.

If you need to make a machine with broaching, then for this you take the shock absorbers of the front struts of the car. It is preferable to a passenger car, because they are too massive for a truck. You can purchase them at any car dismantling point. Before installing shock absorbers, in order to facilitate the movement of the rod, the oil is drained and “air” holes are made in the body.

What can you use to make your own electric saw?

If in the process of work it becomes necessary to cut boards or other material for subsequent joining of workpieces at the ends, and a pendulum saw is not at hand, you can make it yourself from the tool you already have. Any electric tool in which the working element is a saw blade is suitable for this.

From a grinder on a metal stand

The grinder is a unique tool from which you can make any cutting tools and devices, including a miter saw. The simplest trim design will allow you to cut boards and other material at an angle of 90°

You can quickly whip up a crosscut for cutting boards at right angles

Such a tool is quite simple to build. To do this you need:

  1. Make a frame from a metal sheet and corners, and weld (bolt) a stand from a 50x50 corner to it.
  2. For the lever, use a pipe onto which two brackets for attaching the grinder are welded. The grinder is bolted to the casing, which must have sufficient rigidity and thickness. Anyone can, using their imagination, come up with their own mounting option.
  3. The lever can be fastened to the vertical stand of the machine using a regular bolt, providing stops to fix it in a vertical position, or simply using a self-clamping structure, as was done in video 1 below.
  4. Having attached the grinder to the pipe, you need to make a slot in the frame so that the saw blade can freely pass through it, ensuring a complete cut of the workpiece.
  5. The design of this miter saw is quite simple. To do it yourself you need:

    Homemade workbench (fasteners) without a drawing

    To make it easier to work on a miter saw, you need to make a workbench for it. It is desirable that it be collapsible, in case you have to work with the tool not at your place of residence, but at a construction site. Therefore, it is best to attach the workbench top to the legs using self-tapping screws. To make such a workbench you need:

    This workbench can be used both in a home workshop and taken with you for export. to the place of work.

    Miter saws are a unique tool for many construction jobs related to woodworking. When you need such equipment, you can now choose the right trimmer for yourself, or make it yourself if the need for sawing work does not arise too often.

While working on the last wardrobe rooms that were assembled on the basis, I was faced with an urgent need for a miter saw, because you can’t do much work with a jigsaw and a hacksaw for such volumes.

I looked around, scratched my turnip and my gaze fell on the Elitech, which I purchased relatively recently in the all-tools store, I already knew that the disc saws aluminum perfectly, the problem was how to adapt all this for sawing the profile strictly at angles of 90 degrees. The fact is that the plunge-cut saw has a spring-loaded “head”, that is, immersion into the material is carried out by hand effort, and it returns independently.

The technical idea started working and by the morning it had degenerated into the next project. The saw is placed on a fixed base strictly perpendicular to it (that is, the base acts as a stop) and, when immersed in the material, it cuts the workpiece across.

I used 16 mm laminated chipboard as the material, since the work was stalled and had to be done urgently. In general, I’ll immediately make a reservation that the proposed trimming is, although working, a concept. During operation, thoughts have already appeared on expanding the functionality, which, I hope, will be implemented later (already in plywood, as a more durable material).

The base is an inverted U-shaped box assembled on confirmations. He is pulled to the workbench by the Crossbar using a clamp (so as not to fidget).

The base for the saw is screwed on top of the base using the same confirmations. You need to carefully one of the edges of the base so that it becomes strictly perpendicular to the base (we will then level the saw blade along it).

We align the saw sole along the edge and, so that it does not move, cover it with strips of 10 mm laminated chipboard, screwed onto self-tapping screws. These strips serve to position the sole and prevent it from moving.

To prevent the saw from moving, we tighten it with a clamp and a clamp made from a metal corner. (then I will make clamps on the “wings”, as when fixing.)

We make a “table” under the base, fixed to the workbench next to the base. It is quite inconvenient that the 16 mm base eats up 16 mm of the cutting depth (which is already only 55 mm). We had to bring the sawn profile as close as possible to the sole.

Having carried out test sawing, we obtained a cut on the stop base. The sawing lines on the workpieces were then set using this cut.

In principle, the design showed itself to be excellent. Despite the identified shortcomings (the solution to which is gradually emerging for me) and the lack of the ability to make cuts at an angle), such a homemade miter saw SIGNIFICANTLY increased the speed of work and completely repaid the time spent on its invention and manufacture.

And finally, a video that illustrates the operation of the device.

The presence of a miter saw in the arsenal of a summer resident greatly simplifies life. This type of saw can be found in any construction supermarket, but the price of a branded miter saw will cause enormous damage to the family budget.

In order not to overpay, you can assemble a miter saw with a broach from scrap material and old tools that almost every self-respecting man has. In this article, we will look at the process of assembling a homemade miter saw and find out exactly what tools you may need for this.

Characteristics of a homemade miter saw:

✓ 350 mm cutting length; ✓ 4.5 thousand rpm; ✓ relatively light weight.

Homemade saw from an angle grinder

A miter saw made from a grinder is one of the most common models. The advantage of this design is that the angle grinder can be removed and, after changing the disk, used for its intended purpose - for cutting metal. The simplest scheme allows you to cut boards at an angle of 90 degrees.

The manufacturing procedure is as follows:

  • First, a support frame is made from a metal sheet framed with a corner. A vertical stand made of a metal profile is welded to it (screwed with bolts).
  • Brackets for attaching an angle grinder are fixed to a section of pipe, which is covered with a casing made from any available material. The main condition is reliable fixation of the grinder
    .
  • The pipe is attached to the rack using a conventional bolted connection. To hold it in a vertical position, limiters or a self-clamping device are installed.
  • Having secured the grinder, a cut is made in the frame for the entire diameter of the disk so that the cut of the workpiece is complete.
  • The side stop for changing the position of the workpieces is made rotary. Marking in degrees will make it easier to select the desired angle.

Every home craftsman can assemble his own miter saw from a circular saw or grinder. At the same time, in the process of implementing the proposed ideas, great prospects open up for creative potential to improve the existing design.

For those who love to craft, a miter saw is one of the most popular and must-have tools. Having replaced the primitive miter box, it quickly gained popularity in small workshops and large-scale production. The advantage of this tool is accurate and safe cutting at right or specified angles. The engine is most often located above the frame, and is mounted on a movable carriage with a handle. The cutting depth is set by limiters at the base, and by hand. Power tools of this kind have already been appreciated by many professional craftsmen and novice amateurs. We invite you to do this too!

Do-it-yourself miter saw from an angle grinder

Homemade miter saw made from a grinder.

Hi all! I needed a device for sawing wooden blanks at an angle of 45 and 90 degrees.

So I decided to make a miter saw from a grinder. I got my bearings with the dimensions and started making them.

The grinder was already available; the hinge was made from a bearing from a VAZ-2109 pump. Well, metal, what’s left of the construction.

It took a couple of days to make the stand - in between. I welded using arc welding - an inverter; I am a self-taught welder.

The hinge is made from a pump bearing.

Mount for an angle grinder, made from a corner.

The result is this kind of stand.

I took the handle from a burnt circular saw.

Since I was counting on a larger diameter disk, I had to enlarge the protective casing. I welded it from a 1.5-2 mm tin. And if you place the guides on the table, it hides the working progress.

I installed the saw blade.

I painted the bed. On the handle there is a speed regulator from a drill for a smooth start. It goes from there to the socket. That is, the socket is adjusted accordingly and the angle grinder.

The advantage of homemade trimming

Today, no one is surprised by a miter saw. A lot of modifications, from branded ones to cheap Chinese ones, with longitudinal and angular cuts are present on the market. However, their cost sometimes goes through the roof, and the accuracy does not always correspond to the declared one. Is it possible to do without purchasing a specialized tool, you ask. Our proposed installation proves that a rip-cut miter saw can be made at home. The costs of its assembly are minimal. In addition, the drill on which our trim is made can also be used for its intended purpose.

Required materials and tools

Consumables:

  • For the frame: a sheet of plywood 14-20 mm thick, galvanized on one plane;
  • Cutting disc with Pobedit tips for longitudinal cutting, diameter – 125 mm;
  • Three pieces of plywood: 30x15 cm - for the handle, 24x15 cm - for the carriage, 18x14 - for the base stand;
  • One-piece window hinge - 1 piece;
  • Drill (possible without reverse);
  • Two pairs of U-shaped detachable guides for furniture drawers;
  • Hardware: bolts, nuts, screws;
  • Cardboard for template;
  • Wood glue, wood varnish.

Tools:

  • Drill or screwdriver;
  • Jigsaw with wood saw;
  • Pliers, drills, nozzles for tightening screws;
  • Painting knife, tape measure, pencil, brush for varnish and glue.

Let's get started

Attach the base stand

We mark the position of the base post on the frame, shifting it to the left side from the middle, and cut the galvanized sheet under it with a chisel. We take a piece of 18x14 plywood and screw it vertically onto 3 self-tapping screws, having previously glued the connection to the frame. For more stability, you can add several stops in the form of corners from the same plywood. We glue them on both sides of our stand.

Making a handle

Using a template prepared in advance, we mark the handle of our cross-cutting tool. We use a piece of plywood 30x15cm. It is convenient to cut curved lines with a jigsaw. The closed contour must first be drilled with an 8-9mm drill to match the width of the jigsaw file. After sawing, we process the edge of the plywood with a rasp or sandpaper, and make the handle streamlined and without burrs.

Connecting the handle to the carriage

For this we need furniture guides. We attach one of their parts to the sides of the handle, the second to the carriage. Both pairs of guides must coincide so that the frame and the handle are practically in the same plane, and ensure free movement of the handle without any jamming.

Securing the drill

From the back of the carriage we attach the drill holder to the screws. It can be made from a small piece of plywood by making a sufficient hole for the cartridge. We press the drill with a cuff made of a galvanized plate, pulling it onto the handle with self-tapping screws.

Installing the carriage

For a more convenient arrangement of workpieces on the bed and trimming them, it is necessary that our carriage has a vertical stroke. This condition will be provided to us by the window hinge. We screw it with self-tapping screws onto the edge of the carriage and to the base so that the moving part can rise and fall to a right angle position. In this case, the carriage will act as a stopper and will not allow the cutting disk to drop below the specified level.

The final stage of work - install the cutting disc, protective cover and limit bar

Using an M8 bolt, 50-60mm long, we make a shaft for our trimming machine.
For the disk, it is best to choose wider washers, because the mounting hole for cutting disks of this diameter can be 15-20mm. We tighten the disk on our shaft with a locknut and clamp it in the drill chuck with a wrench. We place the protective cover above the cutting disc and also attach it to the screws. It should be made from a plate more than 1mm thick. We do a test run of our miter saw and check its longitudinal stroke. The cutting disc should go literally a few millimeters into the bed. A miter saw is most often a circular saw, the structural features of which allow many materials, including metals, to be cut at one angle or another with better effect.

Today we will tell you what a miter saw is, what its characteristics are, how you can assemble it yourself, and what to consider when choosing ready-made models. It’s worth thinking about assembling the trim yourself, because it will save you a lot of money.

Main characteristics of miter saws

As a rule, there are two types of saws on sale:

  • narrow-profile, having a specific purpose;
  • models equipped with a number of auxiliary functions.

Different types of saws differ from each other in terms of cost, which depends on the functions of the model and its manufacturer. The most famous brands of saws are:

  • Bosch;
  • Metabo;
  • "Makita";
  • Interskol and others.

This type of saw, such as a miter saw, includes the following elements:

  • saw blade for cutting;
  • engine;
  • footrest with engine start button;
  • handle for holding and guiding the tool.

Regardless of the type, the trimmer is equipped with a disk made of durable material, which makes this tool universal for various household needs.

Miter saw motor

May be:

  • collector;
  • asynchronous.

The first type of engine does not require constant monitoring and lubrication of parts, and the second type, asynchronous, is distinguished by its durability and quiet operation. Most often it is located to the right of the cutting element of the structure. However, there are models of tools where the engine is placed at the rear, this significantly improves visibility during manual work.

The engine starts to work through a gearbox, and its transmission can be gear or belt. If it is belt-based, then the tool makes less noise and there is no vibration of the cutting element. And the gearing prevents the saw from slipping when cutting under heavy loads.

Device Features

Manufacturers offer a wide range of metal cutting machines, the price of which can range from 13 thousand rubles and above. Therefore, first you need to understand the device and talk about the main nuances of choice.

  • The main structural elements of the saw are an electric motor, a cutting disc, a footrest and a handle;
  • On the footrest there is a button to turn on the electric motor;
  • Using the handle, direct the disk onto a metal workpiece;
  • Each cross-cutting machine must have a disk;
  • The disc is made from different materials, the main requirement for which is increased strength;
  • The motor that drives the cutting tool can be asynchronous or commutator;
  • The advantage of a commutator type motor for a miter saw is that it does not require constant monitoring and maintenance;
  • Asynchronous ones work longer, are not as noisy, but are more expensive;
  • Typically the motor is located to the right of the disk. But some models provide rear installation. It is better not to take them, since cutting metal with your own hands will be inconvenient due to limited visibility;
  • Through the gearbox, the engine transmits rotation to the disk;
  • Belt or gear drives are used. Belt ones are less noisy and eliminate vibrations. Geared ones can be used, but with increased loads the risk of the disc slipping on the metal increases.

Features of the use of miter saws

A crosscut saw, even one assembled with your own hands, is capable of sawing such types of materials as:

  • plastic;
  • tree;
  • aluminum;
  • alloys based on non-ferrous metals.

The good thing about these kinds of tools is that they are compact and don’t weigh too much. The maximum weight of the cross-cutting machine is 30 kg

, this indicator depends on the model and its functional features.

Trimming saws are widely used in the field of woodworking, where they can be used to perform a large number of tasks.

Saws of this type allow you to make miter joints, and such machines are very popular in framing workshops and in furniture production.

Some cutting tool models are equipped with replaceable discs that are designed to cut a particular material. Basically, all types of miter saws are designed so that they can be placed at a certain angle and size when rotating the work table. And some models allow you to turn only in one direction, these are the cheapest options

. Naturally, the cost of modifications to the trim, which can be rotated in different directions, will be significantly higher.

If the tool can be rotated 360 degrees, it can handle even very complex workpieces. Its saw head is tilted relative to the table, and its rotation can be adjusted without difficulty. But remember that in order to determine the angle of rotation, you need to decide on the materials and workpieces for the work.

The most optimal rotation of the tool at an angle is about 50 degrees.

How to make a miter saw with your own hands

If it is financially difficult for you to purchase an instrument, then you can assemble it yourself. We will tell you how to do this below.

To make the frame you will need:

  • thick sheet of metal;
  • steel corners (you can take an old bed).

A hole is cut in a steel sheet using a welding machine.

, and its edges are processed with a file.

To assemble a tool with your own hands, you don’t need an electric motor that is too powerful; 900 W will be enough. It is installed on the base using an additional spring, which acts as a stabilizer.

To tilt the tool, you need to make an effort, in particular to move the handle. But as a result, you will achieve smooth movement for the saw mechanism.

Device parameters

will be like this:

  • 100 mm – radius of the cutting disc;
  • 1500 rpm is the spindle speed.

All these parameters will allow you to easily process wood up to 70 mm thick using a hand-assembled tool.

Be sure to provide adjustable stands and supports. As the basis of the pendulum riser, take a channel that will rest on a metal base.

As a result, our tool will be more durable and weighty, but cross-cut work will be carried out easily with its help.

You can take a three-phase electric motor with a power of 2200 W, and for support a swinging plate on hinged joints. Due to the folding device, the electric motor pulley belt is tensioned. The pendulum can be made based on the material that was prepared for the frame.

For comfortable work with wood, the diameter of the saw should be 420 mm, and the number of spindle revolutions per minute should be from 2800

. As you can see, you can not only buy a high-quality trim, but also assemble it yourself.

Advantages of homemade miter saws

Homemade trimming tools have a number of advantages:

Disadvantages of homemade tools

Of course, along with the advantages of homemade models, there are also a number of disadvantages

for hand-assembled saws compared to factory-made analogues:

  • Not all parts of the design are of good quality, so there is no guarantee that the tool will last for a given period of time. Manufacturers always provide the buyer with information about the warranty period of the product, which, most often, is about three years;
  • poor performance compared to factory counterparts. Of course, it is extremely difficult to assemble a high-quality and high-power instrument with your own hands using scrap materials. Components must be selected as accurately as possible;
  • Not every master has a good knowledge of information on electric motors and other mechanical devices. If the choice is made incorrectly, the tool will have to be repaired frequently, and this may result in financial investments exceeding the cost of a factory saw;
  • even if the factory model has the same technical characteristics as the homemade one, it will be more functional. For example, if using a homemade product you can only make rectangular cuts, then using a factory saw you can process boards at an angle of 45 degrees;
  • safety of use. It is extremely rare that a homemade trim model is equipped with protective covers; sometimes the parts have a number of minor defects that can cause injury when working with the tool. Factory tools are safer to use.

Trimming from various scrap metals

This is a fairly heavy crosscut on a stationary metal table. It will take some effort to control it. But in the end, the saw mechanism moves smoothly, without jerking, and trimming with your own hands is easy.

Specifications:

  • electric motor power - 2.2 kW;
  • disk revolutions - 2800;
  • cutting depth 80 mm.

Materials and tools required for assembly:

  • 900 W electric motor;
  • a metal sheet;
  • metal corner;
  • channel;
  • hinge group;
  • powerful spring;
  • Bulgarian;
  • welding machine;
  • file.

The bed is made from adjustable supports, a metal corner and posts from an old bed. The working surface is a metal sheet like a table surface, in which we cut a hole, and process the edges with our own hands using a file.

  • The pendulum stand for the saw is welded from a channel mounted on a sheet of metal; its height is about 80 cm.
  • The stand for the electric motor is made in the form of a movable metal plate mounted on hinges. When installing an electric motor, a spring is used as a stabilizer. Then you can do without a pendulum and belts.
  • The tension belts are adjusted with a conventional hinged bolt, and the pendulum for the mechanism is also made of metal.
  • As an operating tool, a disk with a diameter of 420 mm is installed on the trimmer.

A miter saw is quite dangerous equipment; when assembling it with your own hands, you need to take care of protective boxes and covers. After all, the errors in the operation of homemade equipment are much greater than those of factory equipment.

Rules for choosing a trim plate

Of course, if you have experience and are not ready to invest a lot of money in purchasing a tool, you can do it yourself. And if you decide to purchase a model from the manufacturer, then be sure to consider the following when purchasing

so as not to be disappointed later.

Having the entire range of electric tools at home is too expensive. For example, a circular saw is rarely needed at home. Sawing boards can be done with a modernized grinder.

A manual electric circular saw made from a grinder is obtained by replacing the standard cutting disc with a wood cutting disc.

True, this option is suitable for short cuts of sheet materials or cutting thin slats. When cutting long lengths or on thick pieces of wood, there is a risk of the blade becoming misaligned

, jamming it. It will be much easier to hold the saw if the handle is not positioned perpendicular to the axis of the tool, but is made an extension of the body.

Craftsmen also make a hand-held chain saw from a grinder. True, such a tool is dangerous for the user: the absence of a chain stopper can lead to unpredictable consequences. In addition, the chain is not lubricated, which leads to rapid wear.

How to make a miter saw table with your own hands

A good material for a table would be a 19mm MDF board.

  1. Measure the depth and width of the entire structure (miter saw);
  2. Now measure the width and depth of the workbench on which the table and the trim itself will stand;
  3. As a result, the lower part of the table made of MDF board should be equal to the width and depth of the workbench, and the upper part should consist of two parts and in total be shorter in length by the width of the miter saw;
  4. The height of the table should be equal to the depth of the cut;
  5. Inside the table (between the top and bottom plates) at a distance of 50 cm, it is important to make rigid partitions from the same MDF board. This is necessary so that when pressed the table does not sag.

That's all for sure now. The miter saw from a regular circular saw is ready.

Interesting!

A miter saw in itself is quite a dangerous piece of equipment, and if you also assembled it with your own hands, the danger of such a mechanism can increase significantly!
On the other hand, by assembling all the parts yourself and taking care of all kinds of protective boxes and casings, you can reduce the risk to a minimum. In this case, the rule applies:
Your safety
is
only in your hands

.

Miter saw

Trimming, that is, cross-cutting boards or bars at right angles, turns out better if you use a special device.

You can also make such a machine from a grinder with your own hands.

  1. To do this, a grinder with a disk for wood is fixed on a rotating bar
    perpendicular to the direction of the length of the board so that the plane of the disk is directed strictly vertically. One attachment point should be located in the area of the gearbox, and the second should be at the opposite end of the machine.
  2. The gearbox housing has threaded holes for attaching standard handles
    . Using the corners and these holes, the grinder must be attached to the moving part of the machine.
  3. The back of the body is attached to the board with a clamp. guard
    can be used on any power tool of a suitable size.
  4. Closer to the vertical support you need to fix the thrust angle
    . It should be located strictly perpendicular to the plane of the disk, both in the vertical and horizontal directions.

The spring at the rear end of the bar is used to return the miter saw to its original position after finishing the cut. The horizontal table must have a transverse groove into which the disk fits when cutting the board. Disc diameter

choose based on the width of the boards. This way, trimming can be done in one go. The main thing is that the inner hole of the disk must coincide with the mount on the gearbox axis.

When working on such a machine, it should be taken into account that the drive power is not intended for heavy loads. Therefore, the rotating disk must be brought smoothly to the surface of the part being cut, and the cut must be made without strong pressure.

How to make a miter saw

For this you will need

  • plywood sheet;
  • aluminum corners;
  • self-tapping screws

Let's start assembling

  1. We cut out a rectangular sheet of plywood and make a long cut on it, along which your trimmer will ride;
  2. We screw two guides on top, for example, from an aluminum angle, to the width of the working plane of the circular itself;
  3. From below to the plywood sheet you need to screw two stands with a height equal to the cutting depth of your saw (5.3 cm).

As a result, we get a guide along which the circular will move. Depending on how we fix it on the table using such a simple mechanism, we can make an accurate cut at any angle. The simplest version of the design is ready.

But what if we want our miter saw to be more functional in operation and look like a factory miter saw? In this case, you will have to show more ingenuity.

  1. First, you need to make a bracket and a stand on which the circular will be attached. Chipboard (27 mm) is an excellent raw material for such a mechanism. Using self-tapping screws and aluminum corners, you will get a very decent upper part of the trim. And the springs attached to the top can make working on such a saw more convenient;
  2. Secondly, we need to fix the tripod itself on a movable rotating stand, make a pendulum saw, thanks to which we will eventually be able to change the miter angle.

Carefully!

Not only the quality of work and functionality of the trim, but also your personal safety will depend on what material you choose for the stand and tripod, and how securely you attach them to the stand.
It’s not for nothing that they say that
if a carpenter is experienced, then he is definitely missing a finger

. Secure the circular as securely as possible! Safety is paramount!

As for the trim itself, everything is said about the assembly. However, if we decide to make a saw that looks like a factory saw, then it will be difficult to do without a table.

Table saw

Sometimes there is a need to change the width of the board or the thickness of the block. The best option for such work is a circular saw, especially if there are a lot of boards. For cutting boards of short length (1-2 m), a tabletop version of a circular saw is very useful. It is not necessary to buy such a machine; you can make it yourself from the same grinder.

The design of a circular saw is much more complex than a miter saw. The contact time of the saw blade with the wood is quite long, therefore the reliability of attaching the grinder body to the frame should be higher.

This is what one of the options for a tabletop circular might look like.

The photo shows that the desktop consists of two planes

:

  • the upper table is designed to advance the workpiece;
  • The lower one serves as a stop for the sander.

The disc passes through a groove in the top surface. If the angle of contact of the two planes is provided with rotary hinges, then it will be possible to adjust the working height of the saw blade to reduce the area of rubbing surfaces.

The head of the bolt with which the angle grinder is secured is clearly visible on the top surface of the table. Protruding bolt

limits the width of the processed board. You can cope with this problem by laying another layer of plywood.

Turning the angle grinder on and off using the key on the body is quite inconvenient. If the key can be fixed in the working position, then it is worth installing a socket with a switch on the outside of the machine.

The stop angle must have the maximum possible length to prevent the board from deviating from the cutting direction. It is better to fasten the corner in such a way that you can change the working distance between it and the disk: then the width of the cut part will also change.

Determine the limits of your machine's capabilities

When making through cuts, the teeth of any saw blade pass just below the table surface in front of the stop. But when you lift the blade above the table for a blind cut, the bottom of the blade's circumference no longer reaches the stop (photo A), and the length of the cut decreases.

The raised disk does not go beyond the plane of the stop, leaving an unfinished jumper on the workpiece pressed against the stop.

Rotate the adjusting screw until it touches the stop that limits the depth of cut.

To know exactly where the cut will go, start by setting the depth (usually equal to half the thickness of the part) using the stopper (photo B), the functions of which are described in the instructions. Unplug the machine and pull the dial towards you, extending it to its maximum. Lower the blade to the desired cutting depth and place a mark on the table exactly under the center of the spindle (photo C).

Using a square or rectangular piece of board, mark the forwardmost position of the spindle on the table with a pencil.

Slide the disc all the way back and place the mark again. Two marks determine the maximum width of the board that can be processed in this way.

Now move the disk all the way back and again mark the position of its center (photo D ). The distance between the two marks determines the maximum cut length for this cutting depth (for our saw it was approximately 150 mm). Measure the distance from the rear edge of the cut to the stop and cut out a spacer 1.5 mm wider than this distance from the scraps. Then, using a standard clamp or double-sided tape, secure the spacer to the table, pressing it against the stop.

Stationary circular

You can use a grinder as a working mechanism in stationary conditions. The bed in this case will have a slightly different design. The stationary option implies the presence of free space and a large amount of work. Therefore, the entire structure can be made more solid, more massive, and, therefore, more reliable.

Bed frame

can be made from a corner with a welded joint. Bolted and other types of detachable fasteners lose their grip due to constant vibration, and the structure begins to wobble.

A desktop made of a wide board or thick plywood is attached to the top of the metal frame. The workpiece will move along it. Stop angle

equipped with a movable mount for adjusting the cutting width.

It would be nice to provide for adjusting the height of the table or the distance of the disk above its surface - then it will be possible to cut out longitudinal grooves in the board.

Controls are located on the side of the machine

: socket and on/off buttons. In the stationary version, it makes sense to exclude the key on the body of the angle grinder from the diagram. If there is enough space, a high-power sander can be used as a drive.

How to make a sawmill from an angle grinder is shown in this video:

The nuances of using a homemade circular saw

You should not lose sight of the fact that the grinder’s main purpose is as an angle grinder.

Therefore, when using it as a homemade circular saw, you need to pay attention to the nuances.

  1. The duration of continuous cutting should not exceed 15-20 minutes to avoid overheating of the engine.
  2. The standard guard on the blade is not suitable for a circular saw. The protective casing can be used from a real circular saw or made independently.

It should be remembered that the rotation speed of the sander can be more than 10,000 revolutions per minute - this is several times higher than the speed of woodworking machines. At this speed, the wood begins to smoke. In addition to the unpleasant odor, fire may occur.

How to do

homemade cross-cutting machine (trimming) for wood with your own hands

The design of the crosscut saw is identical to that of a circular saw mounted above the work table. The blade should protrude above the table no more than a hand-held circular saw. Its main advantages: compactness and light weight. Make it yourself from a circular saw and leftovers 2 how to make a circular saw. Thanks to this, saws are used not only in workshops, but also on construction sites. Unfortunately, homemade tools are quite bulky and heavy. They are convenient to operate in stationary mode.

The tool can be removed from the table and the grinder can be used for its normal purpose.

  1. The turning device of the tool is installed on the turning axis of the car wheel (pin), it is held by a 150 mm ball bearing (if you can find more, it will do).
  2. We weld lugs onto the outside of the bearing to secure it to the base. It is fixed using M6 screws.
  3. To protect against chips, the clip is covered with a box.
  4. We make the broach from shock absorbers from a truck (broken ones will do). Oil is poured out of them, holes are drilled for ventilation, which should be covered with a mesh to remove dust and chips.
  5. To prevent a jerk from being felt when starting work, the saw is supplemented with a soft start module, which slightly reduces the speed.
  6. The last stage of work is the manufacture of protection for the disk.
  • very noisy;
  • To adjust the accuracy of wood cuts, scraps of timber are used, after which the rod is fixed firmly and you can work cleanly.

Advantages and disadvantages of homemade trims

  • Making your own tools saves money. For example, about 500 rubles were spent on modifying the grinder. Making a tabletop circular. In one of how to make a miter saw, the cost of a homemade table and saw mechanism is affordable for most craftsmen;
  • main parameters: cutting depth
    , rotation speed, disk diameter, engine power, table dimensions, selected to suit your own needs;
  • Having assembled the tool with your own hands, the master can easily find the cause of the problem and fix it.
  • The service life of the tool depends on the quality of the source materials, and homemade products are usually assembled from all sorts of rubbish;
  • Homemade trimmers are rarely powerful enough. How to make a table using a hand-held circular saw. After all, for high-quality operation of the equipment, careful selection of parts is necessary;
  • sometimes the money saved on purchasing a factory tool
    is spent on repairing and modifying a homemade one;
  • craftsmen often skimp on their safety by not equipping the table and saw with protective devices;
  • Factory saws are equipped with a graduated scale that accurately indicates the angle of cutting the wood. Schemes for assembling a snowmobile from a Ural chainsaw: 1 how to make a hinged transom for a boat. It is difficult to build such a mechanism on a home device.
