Manufacturing Features

A snow shovel is an indispensable tool in winter.

In order for the equipment to have a long service life, it is manufactured in accordance with certain requirements:

  1. The tray must be strong enough to withstand heavy loads.
  2. To make the shovel glide easily through the snow, the shape of the bucket is given a ribbed surface.
  3. A rubberized grip at the end of the handle will help prevent slipping in your hands.
  4. The length of the handle for a shovel should be suitable for the height of a person; usually it is 1.5-1.8 m. The optimal length is up to the shoulders of the person who is going to use it.
  5. The length and width of the tray depend on the person’s build. For the average person, a scoop measuring 50x50 cm is suitable.

Also, we must not forget about the angle of inclination of the bucket. The larger the angle, the easier it is to collect snow. But at the same time it will be more difficult to reset it. Typically, an angle of 200 to 250 is used.

During the design of the structure, various modifications such as folding handle should be avoided. Despite its convenience and practicality, its service life will be short.

Wooden snow shovel

Wood is a fairly durable and lightweight material, but it is recommended to use it only when cleaning freshly fallen snow. A wooden snow shovel will not cope with ice, but making one for your home is simple and cheap.

The basis for the tool can be a sheet of plywood. The size of the scoop is selected individually, and the thickness should be 4-5 mm. You will also need a cutting. It can be purchased ready-made or made from a block with a cross-section of 5 cm, trimmed with a plane.

Prepare the following tools:

  • emery cloth;
  • screwdriver and drill;
  • jigsaw;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • nails;
  • several strips of metal;
  • primer.

This work may only take a few hours, depending on your skill.

You can start making a snow shovel from plywood:

  1. Cut a square from a plywood sheet. It can be given various shapes, including crescents.
  2. Make a plywood holder. It needs to be cut lengthwise so that its width is 7-8 cm. Make the edges of the workpiece beveled to give it an arc shape.
  3. If you do not use a ready-made cutting, then process the block using a planer and then sandpaper. To avoid damaging your hands while working, you need to make the handle smooth.
  4. In the middle of the workpiece to secure the scoop, make an oblique hole that matches the diameter of the handle. This will allow you to secure the handle at an angle.
  5. Connect the shovel and scoop mount using nails. It is important to ensure that the connection is tight. There should be no cracks in the product, otherwise moisture will penetrate into the material and ruin it.
  6. Insert the cutting into the hole. Screw the lower part to the base using self-tapping screws. It is better to drill holes for them in advance, as the plywood may crack from twisting.
  7. To strengthen the shovel, use a 10 cm strip of aluminum or other metal. It is bent in half lengthwise and placed on the edge of the plywood. Tap with a hammer and secure the entire structure with nails.

  8. Another strip should be used to strengthen the connection between the scoop and the board. And the third stripe is the junction of the handle and the base.

To extend the life of a hand-made shovel, treat the finished product with a primer. It will protect equipment from fungus, wood rotting and unfavorable environmental conditions.

Metal snow shovel

Metal is a wear-resistant material with high strength and resistance to mechanical damage. Shovels do an excellent job of removing loose and wet snow, as well as ice.

Before making a snow shovel, prepare the necessary tools.

For the scoop, it is recommended to use galvanized metal and stainless steel, the thickness of which should not be less than 0.7 mm.

You will need several metal strips, screws, bolts, a board and a handle. The tools are as follows:

  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • metal scissors or grinder;
  • spanners;
  • plane;
  • sandpaper.

Then get to work:

  1. You should start with the base of the inventory, because it determines the width of the scoop and the length of the parts to be fastened. To do this, use a prepared board, making one side semicircular. Make recesses on top for a strip of metal. Drill an inclined hole for the handle in the center of the base.
  2. Cut a sheet of 40x40 cm from a sheet of tin and sand the edges. Drill holes on one side. Use a metal strip to go around the scoop on the side where the holes were drilled. Fold the edges at a distance equal to the grooves of the base. Drill holes exactly along the holes of the scoop.
  3. You can make a shovel handle with your own hands. To do this, chamfer four sides, then make it round and smooth using a plane. Cut the end of the handle at the desired angle and drill a hole for fastening with a bolt.
  4. Place the prepared material for the bucket on the base and drill. Secure it and the strips on both sides with screws.

  5. Next, the tool is assembled. Insert the cutting into the hole. In the place where it comes into contact with the scoop, secure them with a bolt. Drill a hole in the rib of the base and bolt the handle to it for greater reliability.

If you want to extend the life of your homemade equipment, then open the wood parts with varnish or paint. Special substances are also used to prevent the appearance of fungus.

Plastic snow shovel

Plastic is durable. If stored for a long time, it will not rot or rust. In addition, the plastic shovel weighs little, making it easy to use. The best option is to buy a ready-made scoop and attach it to the cutting. The cost of the products is low, and the range is wide.

Bend the plastic a little to test its strength. If cracks and damage appear, it means the material is of low quality and it’s not worth buying a bucket.

You can make a snow shovel with your own hands using a plastic barrel or canister with a wall thickness of 6-8 mm.

To do this you need:

  1. Cut a square from a canister or barrel that will serve as a ladle.
  2. Screw the handle into the center of the base using screws and bolts.
  3. The joint can also be reinforced with metal strips or rivets.

There are many options for homemade shovels for snow removal. They can be made from available materials in the shortest possible time. With proper use, they will last more than one winter. The rest of the year it is better to keep in a warm and dry place.

What are its advantages and what does it represent?

To call it a shovel, of course, would not be entirely correct; the name soil loosener is more appropriate for it. It is a bunch of one or two original villas, intelligently connected to each other with additional supports for the feet, for more convenient cultivation of the land, and a small handle. It is advisable to make (or buy) a handle in such a way that it is up to your shoulders, otherwise when working in your summer cottage it will be uncomfortable for you, or the meaning of such an invention will be lost.

Its purpose includes such things as:

It’s enough to just dig up various root crops. It’s easy and without any problems to get various kinds of weed (without destroying it into small parts, which is important) And also breaks down and loosens the soil

One of the disadvantages of the miracle shovel is its weight. But don’t worry about the fact that you will constantly drag it around your summer cottage; you will only have to get it onto the soil once and move it along the way with small pulls using the handle. If you compare it with the load that you apply when using a simple shovel, then you will spend 2 times less force on the same area. However, it is impossible to dig a hole with this shovel.

There is another type called “digger”

At first glance, you will immediately notice that you see very large forks with a large handle, to some extent this will be true. They are three times wider than ordinary forks; their powerful handle makes it easy to turn out the earth. The footrest of such a tool is very convenient, since you can stand on it with both feet, which makes it easier to drive it into the ground. If desired, such a digger can be quite easily made with your own hands. But if you decide to purchase a tool, one of the advantages is that the level of the handle can be adjusted according to human height. For this purpose there are special bolts installed on the iron “handle”.

Including there is another version of the miracle shovel called “Lightcopper”

It can be compared with the previous version, since they are almost identical, at first glance, it looks like a large fork, but only with a modified handle. It is made in the form of an arc and does not have the ability to change the height of the handle, which can be attributed to its negative features. Well, as you can see, from the name it is quite easy to use when working on the ground.

The principle of making a miracle shovel at home according to drawings or videos

If you decide to make a miracle shovel with your own hands, then the first thing you need to do is make a frame base. To do this, you need pipes with a diameter of approximately 30 mm and a wall thickness so that they are not less than 3 mm, otherwise the frame will not be rigid and will constantly sag or break. In addition, when making a miracle shovel, you will need hard corners with a thickness approximately the same as the pipes for structural strength.

All you have to do to the prepared frame is to weld the teeth with which you will plow your plot. Many self-taught people use ordinary pitchforks for this, which are first cut and then welded onto the finished structure. The main thing when choosing is to rely on the fact that the pins are quite strong and powerful, preferably with a diameter of at least 8–10 mm. There will not be much difference if the pins are round or in the form of another geometric shape. On average, you will need eight or ten pieces for them, depending on the width of the frame you make, rely on the fact that there should be an approximate distance of 65–75 millimeters between the pins.

First of all, when making a miracle shovel, rely on your capabilities and dimensions, adjust all sizes individually. Don’t forget that the miracle shovel for digging the earth with your own hands is designed to make it easier to spend time at your summer cottage; try to make it with your own hands as suitable as possible for your size.

If you are not a lazy person, then it will not be a particular problem for you to make it the most convenient for digging your garden plot.
