Thermoses for baby bottles: how to give warmth to your baby?

Often mothers are faced with this problem when they need to give their child warm food or drink, but it is difficult to warm them up. Also, many do not know how to feed a child at night, saving their time, which can be spent on sleep.

A children's thermal bottle will become a reliable friend on walks, on long car trips and will be useful for heating tea or baby formula at night. Convenience is quickly appreciated; in the future, many people cannot imagine how they could previously manage without this multifunctional thing.

What types of children's thermoses are there?

  • Thermos handbag. A convenient thermos in the form of a handbag is used for food, milk and baby food. Thermos bags are made from synthetic materials. Retains heat thanks to a layer of soft porous material. Keep the temperature for less than two hours. Available in a variety of sizes and capacities, including pouches for two bottles.
  • Thermos container. A thermos looks like a large glass with a lid placed in a protective case. Place a bottle of baby food inside this glass and fasten the lid. They ensure that the bottle remains warm for up to three hours, which is especially important for a long walk, such as around the zoo.
  • Thermos refrigerator. Needed to maintain a low temperature for transporting perishable food products. They are usually bags or hard containers similar to lunch boxes. This portable “refrigerator” allows you to maintain the set temperature throughout the day without having to plug it into an outlet.

Bottle warmers, what are they?

Bottle warmers are usually intended for home use, as they require an electrical connection. They are open-top containers into which a bottle of milk or baby food is placed for heating. Almost all modern models are equipped with a temperature controller and a built-in thermometer sensor.

The main advantage of these devices is the ability to quickly heat milk or other food from the refrigerator. The disadvantages include, first of all, insufficient heating speed.

Thermoses with heater . This is another class of devices that was originally designed for use when traveling by car. By connecting to the car cigarette lighter socket, such thermoses allow you to feed your baby heated food throughout the trip.

Disadvantage - when disconnected from the source of electricity, they work like ordinary thermoses or thermal containers.

DIY thermos container for two-liter bottles

Hello, dear visitors of the site “Visiting Samodelkin”!
Today I want to tell you about another of my homemade products. Summer has arrived, and with it the hot weather! Because of this, I often feel thirsty! Due to the nature of my work, I spend a lot of time in the car. Since I drive mainly around the city, there is no problem with buying a bottle of water. But I would like not to buy a small bottle “for drinking once,” but to buy a one and a half or two liter bottle at once. But the problem is that the interior of a car parked in the sun becomes very hot. And a bottle of cool water left in the cabin turns into a bottle of hot water in just an hour!

You can, of course, get a car refrigerator or a thermobox, but you need this unit to be large enough if you want it to fit a standard two-liter PET bottle! After all, it is quite long! Again, a car refrigerator of this size will consume a large amount of energy, and during long-term parking it can completely drain the battery. And the thermal box will only be effective if it is completely filled with bottles of cool water! After all, if you put one in there, then a lot of cold is spent on cooling the air in the container!!!

So I decided to make a thermal box for one single bottle. So that the bottle fits tightly into it, and there is almost no warm air left there. In addition, it will not have large external dimensions, and it can be carried not in the trunk, but in the cabin of the car.

Looking ahead, I will say that I succeeded.

To make a thermal box I needed the following materials:

1. A piece of PVC sewer pipe, 150 mm in diameter with a socket. 2. Polystyrene sheet PPT15, 50 mm thick (offcuts). 3. Polyurethane foam. 4. Old plastic canister (only its side wall). 5. Plug for a 150 mm pipe. 6. Aluminum self-adhesive tape. 7. Cutting a sewer pipe with a diameter of 110 mm. (For the template. It will remain) 8. Handle from a modular radio station (I just had it! Any door or furniture handle will do). 9. Sanitary silicone. 10. Blind rivets. 11. Foiled polyethylene foam, or any other similar foil-coated heat and sound insulating material.

The prototype was a foam container for baby food bottles, which young mothers now use when going for a long walk with a stroller. The bottle fits tightly into polystyrene foam and remains warm for a long time even in winter! I decided on the concept itself. I decided to take the same technological scheme that I had already used to make a thermobox container. But then I used food-grade technical buckets. Now I need a much smaller diameter.

Having rummaged through my reserves of “necessary junk”, I came to the conclusion that cuttings of plastic sewer pipes would be most suitable for my purpose. After all, my container will not have direct contact with food, so the plastic does not have to be food grade. For the outer casing, I decided to use a piece of sewer pipe for external sewerage, which has a diameter of 150 mm.

For internal - a pipe with a diameter of 110 mm.

But after experimenting with various two-liter PET bottles, I came to the conclusion that its diameter is not enough! Most of these bottles have a diameter of just about 110 mm, and therefore they do not fit inside the pipe!!! If you make an inner glass from this pipe, then in the future you will have to be content with storing only one and a half liter bottles in it, which, by the way, will dangle there a little.)))).

I would like to have a more universal thermal box, so, after thinking a little, I decided to just use this pipe as a template and abandon the hard plastic inner cup altogether!!!

From a pipe with a socket, I cut a piece equal in length to the length of a two-liter bottle (the longest found), adding 10 cm to this size:

A plug will be used as a cover (I had to buy it))))

If you remove the rubber sealing collar from the socket, this plug easily “goes in and out.”))))

You just need to decide on the handle. In the same rubbish of “necessary rubbish” we found this bracket-handle from a military modular radio station:

I secured it on the cover-plug, drilling two holes in it, and using two bolts with larger washers... I placed washers on both sides of the cover:

The lid must be thermally insulated. I decided to do this by placing 50 mm thick foam inside. (It is this depth that the cavity is formed by its walls). And pasting it with a reflective layer on top. For this purpose, I decided to use foil-foamed polyethylene, a scrap of which was also found in my supplies:

I cut a circle to fit the top area of the cover-plug:

Now you need to glue it. From my own (and not only) experience, I know that trying to glue this material is a very thankless task! )))) These materials do not want to be glued with ordinary glue. Therefore, I decided to use polyurethane foam as glue. It has unsurpassed adhesion! There are already mounting adhesives on sale now based on it, which are the same foam, only without adding a foaming agent to it. But I wasn’t going to go buy anything! ))) I just applied a little regular polyurethane foam to the lid:

I let it grow, waited a little, and then smeared it over the surface. I know from experience that after this, its growth stops.

Having placed the parts to be glued together, I left them under pressure for a while, and then assembled the lid. Since the foil layer is quite weak, I glued the lid on top with wide tape, and then secured the handle back:

Now let’s move on to more significant “insulation” using polystyrene foam. Placing the lid on a sheet of foam plastic, I pressed it hard and cut out the imprinted circle with a technical knife. I repeated this operation twice, cutting out two such circles.

I put one of them aside for now, hammered the other tightly into the plug, and taped the surface of the foam with wide tape. After pulling it tight, I stuck the tape on the side walls.

Let’s put the lid aside for now... Let’s move on to the container itself...

We need to make the bottom. The plug does not fit in this case - there is no socket for it on the other side. Once again, poking around in the “necessary trash”, I found a circle that I had once cut out of the side wall of a plastic canister.. (I needed to insert... a fan into the canister!)))). I cut out such a circle, but my hand didn’t rise to throw it away... Sheet polyethylene, about three millimeters thick, can be useful for a homemade person... Well, it came in handy!))))

The diameter was just right for me... I didn’t have to cut another canister))) Having placed the end of the pipe approximately in the center, I traced its outline with a marker.

After which I marked six “ears”, cut them and bent them up:

I inserted the resulting plug with the ears into the pipe, and riveted them with rivets:

All that remains is to cut off all excess with a knife:

The bottom is ready. Let's deal with thermal insulation. I tightly hammered the second circle of foam into the bottom of the container:

I decided to wrap a smaller diameter pipe, which will serve as formwork for me when foaming, with aluminum self-adhesive tape, which I also found in my supplies:

But I didn’t wrap it quite normally. I wrapped it the other way around - sticky side out!!

At the same time, I also lubricated the pipe itself with liquid dishwashing detergent. The idea is to place the pipe wrapped in this way in the center of the container and fill the space around it with polyurethane foam. And when the foam dries, take out the pipe. Before starting, I sealed the center of the bottom with the same aluminum tape:

If anyone is going to repeat this, don't make the same mistake I made - stick the aluminum onto the foam BEFORE inserting the foam into the container! ))))

Everything turned out just as I had planned. I inserted the pipe into the pipe and foamed:

The gun was extended by putting a hose of a suitable diameter on it. I frothed for several days! The fact is that polyurethane foam does not grow or harden in almost hermetically sealed spaces! Therefore, you need to do this in several passes with complete drying! During this time I wrapped the entire container in plastic foil. This time I didn’t glue it onto the “extinguished” foam, but simply cut it to exact dimensions, wrapped it and wrapped it tightly with tape:

It was necessary to make some fasteners for the lid. I decided to again use furniture fasteners, which I no longer use in my first homemade project, and which I always have in stock. Only, this time I found only the fasteners themselves, and the hooks from them disappeared into thin air:

No problem! I had scraps of stainless steel left over from making kitchen utensils. I decided to use one of them:

I cut a strip out of it:

I was too lazy to drill.))) (After all, drilling stainless steel with a drill is another activity!)))). Therefore, I simply made two cutouts with a grinder:

Loosened the handle mounting bolts, placed a strip and tightened the bolts again:

Using pliers I gave it the desired shape:

I cut off the excess. I secured the fasteners themselves to the body using a riveter and blind rivets:

[/center By this time, the last portion of the polyurethane foam had hardened. I took out the “shape” pipe. (Not without difficulty - the expanding foam squeezed it very tightly. But, after loosening it a little, I managed to get it out!). Having taken it out, I cut off the excess foam with a knife, freeing 5cm from it on top. (This is exactly the depth to which the cap-plug is immersed in the socket) After this, I applied a fairly thick layer of silicone sealant to the cut edge: [center]

I smeared the bottom of the lid with liquid dishwashing detergent and inserted the lid into the pipe without tightening it with fasteners. After waiting about an hour, I took out the lid. As expected, a plane formed on the surface of the silicone:

I cut off the excess with a knife:

As a result, I got an elastic “rubber” layer of silicone, to which the lid is pressed tightly. As I already said, when forming it, I did not tighten the lid with fasteners, and it hardened in this position. And now, when the lid is fastened, it is pulled a few millimeters lower, pressing tightly against the “improvised cuff.”

I also covered the center of the foam bottom of the lid with aluminum tape:

That's all! Our container is ready!

It is quite massive, but still, it does not have to be carried in the trunk.

And it is very convenient to carry it by the handle:

A two-liter bottle fits into it quite tightly, pushing out almost all the air from under it... And this is good - you don’t have to cool it!)))

To test it, I put a two-liter bottle of water in the refrigerator in the evening, and in the morning I placed it in a container and took it with me to the car. It was very hot that day - about thirty degrees! Until lunch, it so happened that there was no need to drive, and the car stood in the sun. At noon, before the trip, I was ventilating the “inferno” of the cabin, and I remembered about the water. Opening the lid, I took out the bottle - it instantly fogged up!! The water in it seemed icy to me!! (Although it was cooled in the refrigerator, not in the freezer))). After taking a sip, I placed the bottle back and screwed the cap tightly on. During the rest of the day I took the bottle out several more times. And, despite this, and despite the fact that it was empty by more than half, by the evening the remaining water in it remained cool!!

So the container performs its function very well! And you can also bring, for example, ice cream in it in any heat! And the beer also won’t have to be cooled for a long time if you bring it from the store in this thermal box ..))))

How does a thermos for baby bottles work?

The simplest thermos container is a non-hermetic container with a lid, made of thermal insulation material and placed in a protective case with a handle. The heat-retaining filling of a thermos may differ from one manufacturer to another. The operating principle of a thermos for baby bottles is based on the poor thermal conductivity of porous materials or air in a confined space. The temperature of the bottle is not transferred to the external environment while the bottle is isolated from it inside the thermal container.

Covers for thermoses are made from synthetic and natural materials, including genuine leather, linen and cotton fabrics. Synthetic covers have a number of advantages over covers made from natural materials; they are durable, waterproof and easy to clean.

How to choose a thermos for bottles?

When choosing a thermos for baby bottles, you should remember that its main purpose is to maintain the original temperature of baby food for as long as possible.

When purchasing, pay attention to the following characteristics:

  • Wall thickness. The reasonable thickness of the walls of the thermal container and the secure fit of the lid eliminate the impact of external factors on the bottle.
  • The height of the thermal container. The height should be sufficient to accommodate a baby bottle with nipple and protective cap, so if possible, you should try on the bottle you are using to the thermal container in advance.
  • Smell. Pay attention to whether there is any foreign odor from the plastic parts of the thermos.
  • Cork. Thermoses with a screw cap must have a sealing ring on the neck or on the cap itself.
  • Case. The material of the cover should be practical and, if possible, allow for hand washing. The color of the thermos cover for baby bottles does not affect its performance characteristics and is a matter of personal preference.

Remember that branded manufacturers of thermoses for baby bottles guarantee product quality, safety and compliance with sanitary and hygienic standards.

Why is it needed?

The main function of the device is to maintain the optimal temperature of baby food (milk and special formulas) without compromising quality.
In other words, a thermos prevents food from overheating and spoiling in the heat. In addition, it protects the bottle from mechanical damage and contamination. This is a very important point, because it can break if hit by a stroller or fall along with the bag. A glass container with food, hidden in the baby's stroller, can be accidentally crushed. The fragments can injure mother or baby.

In a regular bag, a container with baby food can get dirty, and small debris can accumulate in the space between the neck and the lid. Whereas a thermos keeps the bag and bottle clean.

The thermos for baby bottles is much better than a regular one. Let's start with the fact that the latter is not suitable for storing milk and dairy products. This is usually indicated in the product instructions. Heated milk in a simple “adult” thermos changes its taste and becomes harmful to the baby.

Advantages of a children's thermos:

  • does not affect the taste and properties of milk and mixtures;
  • Maintains the optimal temperature of baby food for up to 5 hours;
  • prevents damage and contamination of the bottle.

This thermos is very practical and allows you to easily feed your baby while traveling, driving, visiting a doctor, or just while out for a walk.

How to properly use and care for a thermos?

  1. Before you start using the thermos, make sure that there are no foreign materials inside it, packaging or wrapping used for transportation.
  2. Check how freely the baby bottle fits inside.

Carefully! Do not apply significant force when placing the bottle so as not to damage the thermal container.

  1. Fill the bottle with milk or baby food and place it inside. Close the thermal container with the lid and fasten it.
  2. Open the cap and use the bottle as needed. You can also use the bottle without removing it from the container. The empty bottle should be removed from the container and replaced with a full one.

What are the usage restrictions and precautions?

  • Do not place containers with acid, solvents or alkali in a thermos for baby bottles to avoid irreversible damage to the thermal container.
  • Do not place food products without a bottle directly inside the foam thermal container.
  • If the thermal container becomes contaminated with food, rinse it with warm water without using detergents.

Attention! To avoid burns, do not forget that the hot liquid in a bottle placed in a thermos will maintain its temperature for a long time.

What else can you use a children's thermos for?

Thermos for baby bottles can also be used to maintain the temperature of any other food liquids and products in bottles of the appropriate size. Young dads often have the desire to try on a thermos for a baby bottle with a can of beer or cola. You can also pour soups, broths and coffee into a children's thermos.

A “thermos house” of 150 square meters can be heated with one candle [photo]

Insulated every millimeter of the home

More than ten years ago, Nikolai Yatsinovich, a geologist by training, got the idea to build an energy-saving house, because every year the numbers in utility bills do not grow, but take off. The Carpathian citizen started small - he studied the relevant literature, delved into the Internet, and then went to Austria for experience, where thermos houses have been built for a long time and successfully.

“The Austrians were happy to share with me their experience of building energy-saving housing completely free of charge,” Nikolai Yatsinovich told KP in Ukraine. – There is a theory of a passive house. That is, if you properly insulate the building, heat loss will decrease. And with a certain thickness of insulation, the house becomes so warm that the need for a traditional heating system with radiators in each room or a boiler disappears. I got excited about the idea of such construction and upon arriving home I got to work.

Nikolai decided not to build a new house, but to reconstruct an old family house, not quite the correct shape and with an area of 150 square meters. On the first floor of the home, the man arranged garages and other household premises, and on the second - rooms. It was the second floor, where the Yacinovich family will soon live, that Nikolai completely insulated with a 25-centimeter layer of aerated concrete and polystyrene foam. This is several times higher than Ukrainian state construction standards, but, according to the man, it fully complies with modern Austrian and Danish state standards. Every millimeter of not only the walls, but also the slopes of doors and windows, the roof, and thresholds is covered with insulation. As a result, the house does not let in the cold from the street. And the owner of the thermos home claims that it is precisely due to this layer of “fur coat” that at an average winter temperature of -5 degrees the building can be heated with a candle in each room. Comfortable living is also ensured by a constant ventilation system, which does not allow fungi to multiply in a hermetically insulated house.

“We don’t have a single battery,” Nikolai claims. – But there is still a heating system – it’s a water-heated floor. The pipes through which the hot water circulates are hidden in the floor screed and connected to a 500 liter barrel, which is located in the basement. The water in the barrel is heated at night using cheap electricity using two electric heaters of 2 kilowatts each. And during the day it circulates through pipes, which are in all rooms and corridors, and heats the house. We can also heat the water in the barrel thanks to the fireplace in the hall, which we sometimes heat with all sorts of branches. The fireplace produces very little heat, but I connected all the systems in such a way that the water in the barrel heats up perfectly. If we look at the numbers, then the cost of the heating and air conditioning system familiar to Ukrainians for such a mansion is 300 square meters. m. would cost 10 thousand dollars, or even more. For the systems that I used, I paid about 5 thousand. e.

Warm in winter, cool in summer

The thermos house retains heat perfectly. Nikolai claims that if the mansion is heated and the heating is turned off, the rooms will be comfortable for another week. And already two years after the completion of the reconstruction of the mansion, the owners are incredibly happy with their utility bills. The Yacinovichs do not pay for heating, only for electricity. Heating a mansion with electricity, which does not have a single radiator, costs 200 UAH per month.

“If it weren’t for the energy saving system, I would have paid all of one thousand to one and a half hryvnia,” says Nikolai.

In winter it’s warm in a thermos house, up to +23, but what about in summer? Nikolai claims that in the warm season it is always cool in the mansion, because only at night he opens the windows so that cool air circulates through the rooms.

“In the morning we close the windows, and the house remains cool at night, since it is thermally insulated and does not have time to heat up more than 1 degree during the day,” said Kulibin from the Carpathian region. – For example, if early in the morning it was +22 degrees Celsius, by the evening the temperature in the house will be +23, no more. There is one more nuance. We have the angle of inclination and the projection of the roof so well thought out that it shades the windows. That is, in summer the sun's rays fall only on the lower slopes of the windows. In winter, on the contrary, the sun is low, so it shines directly into the windows. This seemingly trifle allows us not to buy an air conditioner.

Externally, Nikolai Yatsinovich’s house does not differ from ordinary ones. And the owner claims that his mansion is not only energy efficient, but also environmentally friendly, because you can breathe easily and freely in the rooms. And I am ready to share my experience with everyone, because it is high time for Ukrainians to think about how to save not only money on utilities, but also the country’s eco-resources.

Thermoses for baby bottles: reviews from parents

Marfa Polivaeva 23 years old, Moscow. We discovered Chicco products. I am very pleased with the thermos, it is very light and comfortable and holds the temperature for a long time. Polina Vlasova 30 years old, Arkhangelsk. I didn’t quite understand how to use the Avent electric baby bottle warmer. You can’t boil milk, perhaps the appliance’s power is low?

Alisa Zakharchenko 28 years old, Kyiv. We used to take a regular children's thermos with us on the road, but a friend advised me to buy a thermos with electric heating from the cigarette lighter. It's so convenient! Now the baby always has warm food with him.

Mark Kozlov 26 years old, Irkutsk . Not entirely satisfied with the quality of canopl. The thermal container does not hold the temperature even after 30 minutes. walking, the milk in the bottle is already cold. Probably, the manufacturer could not save on polystyrene foam and make the walls thicker to better retain heat. I’m generally silent about the price.

Petr Molochkov 35 years old, Krasnodar. We are raising twins and have a two bottle insulated bag. This, you know, is more convenient than two thermal bags. And the company is called Avent, I think.
