Basic Rules
During work, you need to adhere to some rules according to tradition. This is especially important if you plan to make a talisman, and not just a toy. In particular:
- Having started work, try to complete it as soon as possible, putting aside all things for this.
- Don't start anything new until Motanka is done.
- Do not work on the doll on Friday or Sunday. On these days of the week, you need to devote more time to household chores, taking care of your home and loved ones.
- When working with threads, try to avoid knots - wind, twist, tighten them. Otherwise, you can attract trouble. Is it really possible to fulfill this condition? Only in the process of work will the answer be found. According to legend, you can tie a knot in fate by accident, not fate in a knot. Bows and loops are acceptable techniques.
- Do not use needles, scissors, knitting needles.
- If you follow these rules, the doll will attract positive energy into your home. She will be able to scare away evil spirits.

Progress:
To make a doll you will need :
- yarn 2-3 colors,
-ribbons, braid,
-thick cardboard (book)
1. To make the head and body of the doll, take threads of the same color and wrap them around a rectangular object (book)
. We make 30 turns around the length of the book. We cut on one side of the winding. We carefully remove it.
2. Take yarn of a different color. This will be the doll's . We do the same.
3. We fold our threads crosswise and form the head of the doll . Hair can be braided in pigtails.
4. We make the doll’s from the third skein of thread. We wind the threads the width of the book. We make 30 turns. We cut on one side of the winding. We carefully remove it. Stepping back 2cm from the ends of the yarn, tie it tightly with thread of the same color. Cut on the other side. We made hands - the doll's .
5. Divide the pink yarn in half. Insert blouse handles into the middle. Tie a pink thread around the doll's .
Align the hem of the doll , cutting off excess threads. Next we design the doll .
Procedure
First of all, you need to choose the right fabric and threads, choose the right colors. It is allowed to decorate the flaps with embroidery, beads, and rhinestones, but this must be done in advance, since you cannot do without needles and scissors. Having decorated the fabric, you need to tear off the flap from the main fabric with your hands.
The doll's face and body are made of fabric without a pattern, white or flesh-colored. It is rolled into a roll, like an envelope - as intuition dictates. The easiest way is to wrap it in a roll. This is the most reliable method. After this, it is wrapped with threads to give the shape of the head, torso, arms, legs. You can additionally tear the canvas while working to make the Motanka truly beautiful and durable.
The doll is not stuffed separately with holofiber, padding polyester, or cotton wool - this is not necessary. All you need is fabric. Having completed work on the body, you can begin making clothes from pre-decorated scraps.
Motanka is sometimes made only from threads. It is always advisable to use natural materials - wool, linen, etc.
Traditional Ukrainian folk dolls
Good afternoon. We have a debut today, don’t be too harsh. I’ve been on the site for a month now, and I decided to try this topic for the first time. I am interested in the topic of folk dolls that you can make with your own hands. I have a couple of amulets, and now I want to show you what amulets folk dolls exist in Ukraine. Traditional Ukrainian doll-toy – Motanka doll .
Motanka doll is a Ukrainian amulet. The main purpose of the doll is to protect its owner and his home from troubles, bring success in business, and promote prosperity. At the base of the doll is an ear of corn. The doll is made by winding fabrics over a base. The head is made from a rolled linen cloth. The sacred cross instead of a face symbolizes the unity of heaven and earth, the masculine (vertical line) and feminine (horizontal) principles, the energies of Yin and Yang. The cross also prevents the doll from being identified. (The ancients believed that a doll with a depicted face could be possessed by entities). The dolls are dressed in a costume typical of Ukraine in the 18th and 19th centuries. In some details of the costume, ancient traditional Ukrainian embroidery is used, the motifs of which, in turn, also carry symbols of goodness and prosperity.

Master class on making
Svitana gave the link to this master class, for which I thank her very much! Since the text is in Ukrainian, I took the liberty of translating it. Please note: the doll is not a traditional folk one, but an original one, made using traditional techniques.
Source - text (in Ukrainian) and photographs - rukotvory.com.ua/info/majster-klas-z-vyhotovlennya-vuzlovoji-lyalky-vid-oleny-tarasenko/. The author is craftswoman Elena (Olena) Tarasenko.
My beauties are the author's stylization of the traditional knotted princess doll. I present the basic principles of its creation based on materials from the book “Ukrainian Folk Doll” by Alexander Nayden (Kyiv; publishing house “Stylos”, 2007).
About the knot doll
The knotted doll is a descendant of the deity doll, symbolizing Rozhanitsa, the goddess-intercessor of female destiny, the guardian of fertility, who has been worshiped since ancient Slavic and Trypillian times. Today such a doll is better known as a motanka.
The method of creating these dolls is twisting, rolling, winding, tying, twisting. A needle and thread is used only in the process of making clothes and hats.
A characteristic detail of such dolls is a cross woven from multi-colored threads, intertwined in such a way that at their intersection it forms a square. This is an ancient solar sign - a cross in a circle.
Another characteristic feature of the motanka is the cross on the chest. This sign is characteristic of late Tripolian female deities, whose figurines have an image of an oblique cross on the chest. The characteristic cruciform belt is also recorded on images of the Scythian goddess Mistress of the Beasts.
Knot doll manufacturing technology
To create a doll with a height of 28-30 cm we will need:
calico 60x80 cm;
light chintz 50x80 cm;
a well-dried ear of corn;
strong knitting threads;
thin woolen threads or floss of three to four colors for winding the cross;
as well as the following tools:
scissors;
Crochet hook;
threads that match the fabric;
needle;
toothpicks.
Fold a piece of chintz into a strip. The approximate width of the strip is 8-9 cm. We twist it into a “roll”. We tear a piece of calico in half. We set aside one strip and tear the other into two halves. We put a “roll” into one of these halves (photo 5), wrap it tightly with fabric and tie it with thread.
We lay out a cross. I chose a brown color scheme, although it is not traditional. To me, warm shades of brown mean warmth and comfort. The sequence of colors can be whatever you like. I decided to start with white. The photo shows the actual technique of winding the cross. The cross can be thinner or wider at your request.
We tie the doll's head with acrylic threads to the cob of corn.
Next, take a piece of fabric and wrap it around the doll’s head, like a scarf. We tightly wrap the end of the fabric to the “body” of the doll. We wrap the doll with a strip of calico. The end that is on top is secured with thread.
