Sometimes it is very difficult to buy the necessary furniture in a store - the models you like may turn out to be too expensive for the family budget or may not fit in size.
But you can always make a table with your own hands from wood and enjoy the admiration of your friends and acquaintances. In any hardware store you can choose not only the necessary lumber, but also high-quality fittings. It’s better to do the decor and finishing yourself. On this topic:

To make simple furniture, they use tools that are found in almost every home - a saw, a drill, a screwdriver, a drill, a jointer, a grinder, a tape measure, and a square.
Features of wooden table models: deciding on the support
First, let's choose the shape of the support. The choice of material, finishing, and tools depends on the decision. There are different models.
- Model on a single support. The rounded table top looks good.
Models created on two legs must have a jumper. Then the table will be stable and easy to use.
The easiest way is to create a traditional table with four legs. This design is the most reliable.
It is important to understand what scheme should be used to implement emerging ideas. And if the upper part of the table can be hidden with a tablecloth, then the legs turn out to be an important aesthetic component that can reveal deviations from the standards.
How to choose the shape of the countertop?
Slab tables are manufactured with different tabletop shapes. What possible options are there?
- The round model looks good in a spacious room created in a rustic or Scandinavian style. Only volumetric space will ensure freedom of movement for people.
An oval model is best suited for the dining area. A large table is created that can accommodate the whole family and guests.
Furniture that has small oval tabletops is a coffee table or a coffee table. For the living room, it is better to choose high quality furniture that is functional and elegant.
There is also a universal table shape - with a rectangular wooden tabletop made of solid wood. If you decide to choose a rectangular model, you can successfully implement any design. You can create a small folding or portable table.
You can make any table from sawn wood. There are no restrictions regarding shape, height and size.
What will you need for the job?
Before creating a table made of natural wood, it is important to ensure that you have all the necessary materials.
You can use an old countertop or a piece of plywood. Only a high-quality tabletop made from end cuts will allow you to count on long-term service.
- End cuts. The configuration and number of cuts depends only on your plan
. There should be enough elements for uniform, tight installation across the entire countertop. You can use different types of wood or the same type of material. If you want to create a beautiful table made of wood, it is best to combine. - Carpenter's glue is needed for attaching sections of wood and tabletops. The volume of glue is determined by the specifics of the work. You must be sure that each end of the structure is securely attached. One package yields 200–300 g of finished glue.
Epoxy resin with a hardener is a substance that will fill the space between the cuts. The amount of material used can be any. A high-quality material will make the table beautiful and reliable. Cheap things won't last long.
Electric sanders are used to sand wood surfaces. Additionally, you will need sandpaper with a grit of 120 and higher.
Stages of work
The technology for making countertops from wooden saw cuts is specific.
Preparation
- The first task is cutting the material into thin sections. You must do everything accurately and carefully
. If you can cut fragments of the required thickness, the impregnation with a protective agent will turn out to be of high quality. And you can save epoxy resin. The thickness of the cuts should be 1 cm. If you do not have special equipment, contact a professional who can correctly cut the recommended thickness of the material with a chainsaw or circular saw. Dry blanks are used for slicing. If the end cuts are wet, the slab needs to be dried.
The next stage is preparing the base. It is best to avoid using chipboard, as the material may become deformed or fall apart when humidity levels change. Use sections of natural wood or thick plywood. Moisture resistance is important.
When purchasing material, you can order it to be cut according to the calculated dimensions. Craftsmen can correctly cut the material for a table of the required dimensions.
Description of the main part of the work
How to make a table using natural wood slices yourself?
- The slab must be processed correctly. Sand and remove bark. The material should become smooth along the end edge. The first stage is preparing a blank for the tabletop, then arranging the cuts and making a quality product will not be a difficult task.
Now you can fix the elements with wood glue. Lubricate each cut and then press it flush against the base. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's recommendations and set the structure aside until the adhesive has completely dried.
Now we need to make the edges along the edge of the table. For rectangular tables use plywood or wooden slats, for semicircular tables use flexible sheets
. Fastening can be carried out in any convenient way, therefore the use of nails or self-tapping screws is permitted.
Then the epoxy resin is prepared. To obtain the desired shade, use fillers. To create a coffee color, 10% soot and bronze powder are used, for white - classic chalk, for gray - cement, for black - soot. You can buy ready-made dyes.
You need to fill all the voids with epoxy resin, then wait until the product dries completely.
Now you can sand the entire surface. To do this, you will have to remove the thinnest top layer using an emery wheel. You must create a tabletop that has a distinct saw-cut pattern.
The last stage involves applying varnish. The best material is polyurethane. Durable and abrasion resistant.
A table using slab will last a long time. A creative approach, ingenuity, a little experience working with wood - and you can count on a good result.
Nature is the most perfect creator. Each of her drawings, each form is unique. Designers skillfully use this, complementing sophisticated or high-tech interiors with objects as close as possible to their natural state.
Meanwhile, everyone can see the unique true beauty in an ordinary piece of wood, a stump, a branch, skillfully highlight it with their own hands and find the best place for use in their own home, at their summer cottage, in the garden. A large or small table, made from a longitudinal or transverse cut of wood, will become the highlight of your living space.
Wooden tables: range of shapes and sizes
Elegant benches will ideally complement a homemade table.
It is important to decide in advance what shape and configuration the table requires. Professionals advise paying attention to several points:
- the table should fit well into the room where it is planned to be installed;
- think about how many people will constantly be at this table and what it will be used for; from this parameter, calculate the size of the product;
- choose a folding table option if from time to time you need it for more people;
- take into account the age and capabilities of people (for example, the table for children will be different).
By choosing different positions of the table legs and the distance between the boards, you create your own unique design.
The table can be of different shapes. In addition to different shapes, the table can also have different support under the tabletop itself, in other words, a different number of legs.
- table with one leg - this type of installation is suitable only for a small product; it can be used, for example, to make a children's table;
- table with two stable legs - this type of table is good for a rectangular or oval tabletop, but is quite inconvenient and unstable for constant use in everyday life;
- a table with four legs is the most common type, has the greatest stability (compared to the others), is suitable for both a dining table and a coffee table - it is the most versatile type of this type of furniture.
The table can be decorated with openwork wood carvings.
In order to guess the most suitable table size for any room, you should take into account and constantly keep in mind the area of the room itself and that part of it that is the maximum allowable for placing this piece of furniture; you should also, of course, take into account the wishes of the owners.
What will you need for your job?
To make an original table from a vertical cut of wood with your own hands, you need to prepare:
- A cut of dry wood with approximate dimensions of 1700x600 mm, 25 mm thick.
- Metal (steel) plate about 600x35x3 mm.
- 4 steel rods with a diameter of 9 mm, length 1.5 m.
- Epoxy resin (transparent).
- Wax, varnish for a transparent finishing coat of wood.
- Black spray paint.
- Screws No. 12 (1.9 cm).
- Painting tape.
- Grinding machine.
- Sandpaper of different grits.
- Hammer.
- Chisel.
- Drill.
- Welding machine.
- Protective gloves and glasses.
Making tables from wood and epoxy resin
Recently, furniture made using non-standard technologies has often been used in various interior styles. You can make your own tables from wood and epoxy resin yourself. Its quality, with proper care, will be quite high, comparable to a designer item.
Epoxy resin is a transparent material with a 3D effect. It is very decorative and significantly improves the appearance of products. Most importantly, different types of wood, light and dark, can be used with this substance. You can add originality to the future tabletop by selecting bevel cuts, bark trimmings and placing them in the free space next to the boards. It is better to pull out the knots and put shells, moss, corks and even coins in the holes.

Fill the tabletop by first attaching the sides to it. The thickness of one layer should not exceed 0.5 cm. When pouring, the room temperature should be kept constant. Since when it increases, air bubbles may begin to be released from the pores of the wood, which will spoil the quality of the product. After each layer, wait two days and repeat again until the tabletop reaches the desired thickness.
You can try to disperse any air bubbles that appear with a hot hair dryer. Or, before starting work, coat each workpiece with resin and dry it.
Decoration of any interior
Many horizontal rounded cuts of wood are now actively used as decoration for walls, floors and, of course, in the production of tables, chairs, and other furniture. Tables finished using this technique are unique; the arrangement of small and large cut circles can be arbitrary or form a specific pattern.
Making a beautiful product with your own hands is not easy, but very interesting. And if you follow all the requirements for the work, the result will please you.
Materials and tools
- Tabletop. It will serve as the basis for the arrangement of wood cuts. You can use an old piece or prepare the shape you want from a piece of moisture-resistant plywood (12mm). This material is preferred, it will not change shape and will provide a flat surface for DIY decoration of the main part of the table.
- The required number of horizontal (end) cuts. They can be selected from the same type of wood or from different ones in order to play it off in an interesting way in the drawing. It is advisable to have different cut diameters (from large to small), in this case they can be stacked more closely together. Each cut should be no more than 1 cm thick. Otherwise, more epoxy resin will be needed.
- To fill the free space left after laying the cuts, you will need high-quality epoxy resin with a hardener.
- Wood glue (suitable for all types of wood). With its help, each section will be separately attached to the tabletop with your own hands. Purchase a container up to 300 grams.
- Finishing varnish.
- A grinding machine with wheels of different grain sizes - from 120 and more.
How to make a table with your own hands from wood
You can make a table yourself even at home, if you have the simplest tools.
To do this you need to do the following:
- Measure the area where you plan to install the table and determine its dimensions.
- Select model.
- Purchase materials. (Metal, glass and plastic go well with wood. They will give the product a modern look. However, for styles such as antique, baroque, Provence or the Renaissance, these materials are unlikely to be useful).
- Assemble the tabletop. (The easiest way is to use tongue and groove boards or a solid piece of wood). It is better to use screws and glue.
- You can make a simple frame with legs and a base yourself or buy a metal one at the store.
- After assembly, the table needs to be varnished or painted.
In order for the product to last longer, each wooden part, even before assembly, must be impregnated with special antiseptics, compounds that protect against fire, mold, rot, wood beetles and other pests.
Detailed job description
The final result depends on how patiently and carefully you take all the processes. Use only well-dried materials in your work, this will save you from damage to the product in the future.
After adding 10% carbon black and up to 10% bronze powder to the epoxy, you will get a coffee-colored product. To get a white color, add regular chalk. The soot will turn the resin black. Using cement you will achieve a gray tint. There are red, green, and blue pigments on sale that will make your table even more original, suitable for a specific interior.
- Having prepared and colored (if necessary) the epoxy resin, you can begin to fill all the voids created when gluing the sections. Using a large number of small radius cuts will help save epoxy resin. Pour in the product slowly, making sure there are no air pockets left. Then leave the table for a long time until it hardens completely.
- When the resin has completely cured, proceed to final sanding of the surface. Start with a coarse sander pad, then get the table perfectly smooth using a fine-grit sanding surface. As a result, each cut will be clearly defined, and the space around it will be completely filled with epoxy resin.
- The final touch is to coat the table with varnish. With polyurethane compounds, tables last a long time, maintaining a beautiful original appearance.

Many have seen tables with tops made from sawn wood, but few know that such an unusual option can be made independently. We will look at how the work is carried out, what components are used and what nuances should be taken into account in order to get the best result in the end. Of course, the process will require some time, but in the end you will receive a unique product that you are unlikely to see from anyone else.
What epoxy resin to use for countertops
There are a lot of epoxy resins and the price range is considerable. Let’s say right away that a cheap one is not suitable for a normal result. You need a transparent one that does not become cloudy or change color over time, and these are expensive compounds, for example, 3D MG-EPOX-STRONG. They are often classified into a separate category: epoxies for countertops. When choosing, you need to pay attention to the following parameters:
- Minimal layer.
- Maximum layer.
- Time before pouring the second layer.
- Time until final drying.
The fact is that there are resins that can only be poured in a small layer at a time. Let's say the maximum layer is 10 mm. And the next layer can be poured after 24 hours. If you need to make a tabletop 6-7 mm thick (4 cm wood, plus 1-1.5 mm at the bottom and top), it will take a whole week. And this is just to fill in layers. There are epoxy resins that can be poured in a layer of up to 6 cm or more.
If you are going to make a table from epoxy resin for the first time and have not dealt with this material before, it is better to choose those that are poured in a thin layer. With them it is easier to ensure the absence of bubbles. Although, you may like the “frozen soda” effect. If you want to tint the resin, you need to buy special dyes. When pouring layer-by-layer, the dye is diluted in one of the components before adding the hardener. This way the color will be uniform.
How much resin is needed
How much epoxy resin do you need for a table? It's not easy to answer. The tabletop can be of different sizes, it can be small or thick. There may only be a small “river”, or perhaps most of it will be made of epoxy. In principle, you can roughly calculate the volume of the countertop that you plan to make. Estimate the percentage of wood that will take up, the rest will be epoxy resin. So we calculate how much epoxy resin we need for a table for our own case. Some who make only a “river” will use 4-6 liters, while others may require 20-30 liters or more.
What you will need to carry out the work
To carry out the work, you need to stock up on everything required:
Tabletop | This can be either a ready-made version from an old table that you decided to transform, or a piece of plywood 12 mm thick or larger in the configuration you need. The product will serve as the basis on which the sections will be strengthened, so the main requirement is a flat plane and sufficient load-bearing capacity to subsequently eliminate sagging and deformation. |
End cuts | Their configuration and quantity depends on your preferences; it is important that there are enough elements to fill the entire surface of the tabletop, and they are located close to each other. You can use one type of wood, or combine different options, sometimes this gives a special charm to the finished product. |
Epoxy resin with hardener | This composition will be used to fill the space remaining between the cuts, so its quantity can vary within significant limits. It is important to choose a high-quality option; there are many types on the market, so you must not go wrong (low price is an indicator of appropriate quality, so choose options from at least the middle segment). |
Wood glue | Needed for fastening saw cuts and tabletops. Its quantity depends on the volume of work. Most often, one package per 200-300 grams is enough. |
Grinding tool | During the work process, it will be necessary to grind the surface to obtain a perfectly flat plane. For this purpose, eccentric ones are used; they provide ideal processing quality. Be sure to purchase sanding pads of varying grits (120 grit and up) to achieve the best results. |
Advice! You don’t need to buy a sanding machine specifically for making a table; the easiest and smartest thing to do is rent it for 1-2 days, such services are provided in most cities, just find the nearest company.
Process description
The technology of countertops made from wood cuts differs significantly from conventional options, so we will look at it in great detail. It is important to prepare properly and strictly follow all recommendations, this is the only way to guarantee a positive result.
Preparation
As part of this stage, the following list of activities is carried out:
- When cutting the material into thin sections, it is very important to do everything as accurately and accurately as possible; the smaller the thickness of the fragments, the better they will be saturated with a protective composition and the less epoxy resin you will use. It is best if the cuts are about 1 centimeter thick; if you do not have cutting equipment, or you do not know how to work so accurately, invite a specialist with a chainsaw - he will quickly do everything necessary.
What do you associate with the phrase “country furniture”? Unfortunately, at many of our dachas they are selected based on residual characteristics: everything that is not suitable for a city apartment. But a dacha is a special world that requires a special environment that creates an atmosphere of unhurried, relaxed relaxation.
And, by the way, a dacha is also an excellent place for experiments, including making dacha furniture with your own hands. In this article I will look at garden furniture made from wood materials that are very common in suburban areas - logs and wood cuts.
Features of different table models
Models of wooden dining tables can be simple. But, as a rule, the products themselves are quite large. Unless, of course, the table will be in the small kitchen of a standard city apartment.
The experience gained in making a dining table will be useful in the future. Knowing the manufacturing technology well, you can make a small coffee table. It will differ only in the smaller size of the tabletop and lower legs.
But with a desk there will be much more work. Unlike the dining room, you will also have to make bedside tables for it, two or one, depending on the chosen model and according to the principle of making the simplest box. Only on one side, using awnings, you need to install the door and attach the fittings. Guides are glued to the sides and secured with screws. All that remains is to push all the drawers and close the door. The table is ready.
You can significantly simplify the process of making a table and use ready-made kits. For those who have no experience working with wood or making things themselves, it can be quite difficult at first. For a desk made of wood, it is better to use metal legs purchased at a furniture store. And also assemble the bedside table from kits. OK it's all over Now. All that remains is to choose beautiful handles and high-quality fittings. This work cannot be called difficult. Even a teenager can handle it if he assembles the table together with his parents and follows safety precautions.
The most reliable option for fastening wooden parts are considered to be special self-tapping screws, which do not require precise holes. Especially with a small connection thickness. Using an electric screwdriver can speed up the work.
In order to make the table structure even more durable and reliable, the parts to be fastened must first be glued together. Using self-tapping screws, furniture nails and water-based wood glue, you can get a high-quality connection that can last for decades.
All lumber that is required to make the table must undergo a drying process in a special chamber.
Then there will be no chance that the tabletop will warp or the thin wooden legs will bend.
Slabs, saw cuts, unedged boards
Wood, like any natural material, has a unique surface pattern.
And it is not at all necessary that it be valuable wood. Ordinary pine, when properly processed, also looks very presentable. In the wake of interest in environmental friendliness and ethnic styles in the interior, objects made from wood cuts or slabs have become popular today. Manufacturers immediately picked up the fashion trend, offering products made from exotic wood. What is the difference between a cut and a slab?
Slab
(or slab) comes from the English
“slab”
, translated as
“slab”
,
“thick plate”
.
Most often, a thick longitudinal cut of a tree is called a slab, and a thick, but transverse cut is simply called a cut
.
Cutting down a tree. Photo from impactimportsusa.com
Both longitudinal and transverse cuts are suitable for making original furniture. How, in this case, does a slab differ from a simple unedged board? In general, nothing, except that the edged board
- this is one of the types of lumber used for construction, mainly rough, work, and slabs are intended for decorative purposes.
Therefore, thick logs are used to make them so that the wooden slab is as wide as possible. And all sorts of wood defects, such as burls, curling, internal cavities, which deteriorate the quality and grade of an ordinary board, on the contrary, increase the value of a slab of wood. The more interesting the wood texture on the cut, the greater the decorative effect.
Wood slab. Photo from odiesoil.com
Slabs, unlike construction boards, which have natural moisture, are subjected to chamber drying. The edges of the slab are additionally trimmed, or a natural “live” edge can be left on it, debarked or with the bark preserved.
Wide and thick slabs of exotic wood cost a lot. But look how beautiful the cut of an apple or pear tree left after removing an old tree in the garden is. When clearing an area of old trees, do not rush to get rid of the trunks: maybe they hide a stylish garden or other piece of country furniture.
Processing and finishing
Since Karelian birch is a material susceptible to moisture, it is necessary to include in the processing cycle a special coating with moisture-repellent and protective dyes.
The wood preparation cycle includes several types of processing:
- Drying - if the wood gets wet in the rain, it must be dried thoroughly, otherwise birch furniture will become deformed and quickly lose its appearance;
- Gluing - this process allows you to prepare timber of the required thickness and type;
- Polishing is a necessary step to achieve ideal evenness of a wooden panel;
- Etching with special substances improves performance characteristics and increases the service life of furniture.
The resulting wood is processed on milling and lathes to produce unique furniture of various shapes.
Ideas for inspiration
Natural wood is attractive with its texture, unique pattern of growth rings, and warm natural shades.
And large-format slabs of wood or large cross-sections usually amaze the imagination with their natural energy, visually demonstrated by the whimsical texture pattern and impressive size. Therefore, in my opinion, products using these materials do not need any additional decorative processing: intricate carvings or complex elaborate shapes will compete with the natural beauty of the material. Both sides have little to gain from this fight. In my opinion, wood slabs or cuts are most suitable for modern furniture in the spirit of minimalism.

This ash slab dining table successfully combines the natural beauty of wood with modern materials - glass and metal.
The same combination, based on the juxtaposition of natural and artificial, smooth metal and the brutal unevenness of an oak board, underlies the stylish solution from the designers of the Anand Gowda Design carpentry workshop.
Bench. Photo from the website
and anandgowda.com
This approach to design simplifies the production of such stylish furniture by non-professional craftsmen. The base or legs of the bench can be made from an ordinary square metal pipe yourself or ordered according to drawings. And even if you don’t own a welding machine, you can choose ready-made furniture supports that match the design to your design.
Coffee table. Glass, oak slabs. Photo from funvit.com
Or you can not make the legs at all and limit yourself to only glass and wood cutting. The result will be an original piece of furniture, similar to the coffee table in the photo above.
Cross cuts are no less interesting as a material for making furniture yourself.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a cut tree of such a large diameter. Using very small trunks and branches, you can assemble a panel that will be used as a tabletop. The parts are glued to the base, and the gaps between the individual elements are filled with epoxy resin-based glue.
Thick and wide boards and cross cuts are used not only for making table tops or benches. These can be headboards of beds, cabinet parts, and simply decorative panels.

Another interesting and much more common material is ordinary logs or even thick unsplit logs. Furniture for the terrace. Photo from yellowstonefurniture.com
Blocks of wood can become supports for a bench or garden table, or preparation of chairs for a recreation area. Or an independent piece of interior or exterior - a stool, a table, or just a decorative thing.
Korean designer Lee Jaehyo creates original compositions - a synthesis of furniture and art. One of his favorite materials is logs.
Logs can also be used as a finish in more traditional forms of furniture. Such a chest of drawers will fit into the interior of a country house in the so-called hunter style, and into the living room of a city apartment. Such furniture - rough, but of good quality - is indispensable in the design of a rustic or ethnic interior. Chest of drawers with log trim. Photo from esquirol.co
In the same spirit, the rest of the design of the house can be decided, including structural elements: beams, stairs, etc.
If this style is close to you, or you prefer unusual furniture solutions, try creating a similar item yourself. Get double benefits - stylish designer furniture and the pleasure of creativity.
Basically these will be coffee tables, original, different from the ones we are used to. There will even be wood and bark in the selection, look!
It must be said that furniture design has changed recently. It would seem that what new can be invented here? But no, it’s possible. The pieces of furniture are the same, but they look different.
The trend can be called “back to nature”. How is it shown? Untreated wood is increasingly common, natural bark, tree roots, and cracked saw cuts are used. We are tired of artificiality, the cold of glass and concrete of megacities, we want naturalness, naturalness, wildlife, the warmth of wood.

Root coffee tables
In my house there is no such thing as a coffee table; for me it is an absolutely unnecessary attribute. It stands in the middle, next to the sofa, it makes it difficult to walk through, it is inconvenient to eat behind it due to its small height, unless you put a book or a glass or a glass. It takes up space and accumulates dust on its surface.
But in many homes it is an integral part of home furniture. So I’ll tell you about them. Tree roots often have a unique, bizarre shape; tables are made from them. For example, like this.
Of course, it should be noted that it is more difficult to process the roots due to their complex structure and bending, but the result is worth it.
If in the tables we are used to, everything should be smooth and neat, then here everything is exactly the opposite. The more ornate the roots, the more interesting the wood cut and the pattern of annual rings, the better.
There are some more examples of their tree root tables in another post. I was especially struck by one, a huge one, which served for cups and tea for breakfast at the hotel. It was something amazing, a continuous interweaving of roots.
Even such a round conglomerate of roots or solid wood can be turned into a table; a round glass tabletop is installed on it - the work of art is ready.
