Homemade door handle from a branch

A homemade wooden door handle made from a curved branch and very easy to make.

Hello to all DIY lovers!

I recently had the need to install a new door handle on my barn door. However, there was no spare pen at hand at that moment. Of course, I could have gone and bought some kind of pen, but then I remembered that I still had one interesting blank from last year.

The fact is that in early spring last year, while pruning garden trees, I saw one bizarrely curved branch. This branch grew as a shoot from the stump of an old elm tree, which had long since been cut down. However, young growth is constantly growing in this place, which must be trimmed periodically. And since elm wood is very hard and durable, it can be used for various crafts. That is why I did not burn this branch, but sawed off the most curved section from it, removed the bark from it and put it in the barn to dry.

And just now this blank came in handy for me, especially since it had dried well during this time, and it could have been used to make a door handle.

Below is a photo of this blank.

Making an original door handle

In this small master class I decided to show how you can make a very original handle for a door. As blanks, I took a cross section of a Siberian larch burl (base) and a piece of an Angara pine branch (the handle itself). In principle, you can use completely different materials for work, those that are at your disposal.

When working on a handle, everything will depend on your imagination, naturally, qualifications and certain skills in working with power tools. And the power tools you will need are a jigsaw, an electric plane, a circular saw and a hand router.

First, I planed a blank from the cross section of the burl and, using a jigsaw, cut out the shape I needed.

There was a small part with bark on the side of the workpiece.

It has to be removed with a jigsaw. As a result, after working with a jigsaw, you get this side edge.

And here is a general view of the handle base blank.

Using a router, we select the configuration we need.

At the same time, to round the edges of the base of the handle, we use a semicircular cutter.

Since the length of the handle is 29 cm, we are forced to do the sampling in parts (after all, we need to clamp the workpiece with a clamp).

As a result of milling work, the following picture is obtained.

Next you need to do some manual sanding.

Grinding the side edges using a hammer drill and an attachment.

And chamfer all edges.

After all these steps we will get the finished base of the handle.

For the handle itself, you need to select a beautiful knot, remove the bark from it, sand it and carefully trim the edges using a circular saw so that you can then install them on the base. I got the following.

The gluing stage begins. Mixing epoxy glue

Thickly coat the base of the handle.

And, using a clamp, we fix the handle to the base.

The gluing units must be reinforced with dowels. There are two ways to go here. The first step is to wait for the glue to set (for a day), and then drive in the dowel. On the second one, the dowel can be driven in immediately.

I went the second way. Drill two holes on the back side of the base.

It is best to drill holes at a slight angle. We hammer the dowel onto the glue.

We saw off the excess dowels.

Now you can remove the clamp, because her effort made our handle bend a little and the edges seemed to rise somewhat. We fix the edges with electrical tape. and send the workpiece to dry (set) the glue for a day.

The next day, the handle should be varnished three times. I took the glossy Eurotex. It turned out to be a beautiful product.

This is how the pen turned out. I hope you can do it too.

Thank you for your attention, with respect A. Novikov.

Important points

When making a product from a board, consider several important points:

  1. The bark must be removed from the material, otherwise the handle will not last long.
  2. All edges of the product are carefully sanded, as are the canvas and the box. At first, you can use a power tool, but you will have to manually adjust the evenness.

Simple products

  1. All wooden parts are treated with special compounds. This will protect them from moisture (especially if the handle is for the bathhouse door), microorganisms (fungi, mold), and fire.
  2. To give the handle a tint, use a wood stain of a suitable tone.
  3. Finishing is varnishing in several layers. At the same time, make sure that there are no drips left on the product.

How to make unusual handles for doors and furniture

Over time, fittings on furniture and doors wear out and become old. Salon products are expensive. Therefore, it is better and more interesting to do such decoration. The first thing guests of any home come into contact with is the door handles, starting with the entrance. They not only have a functional value, but also create an overall style. Therefore, the overall impression of the home is created by small details. The more original it is made, the better.

Child-safe door handles

  • Often the handles on furniture have sharp metal corners that can cause injury to small fidgety children. An ordinary leather belt will help solve this problem. How to use it as accessories? It's simple: cut two strips of the required size from the belt, make holes at the ends, and use fasteners to attach the handles to the doors. For creativity, you can paint it in a bright color.
  • Children's furniture is decorated with colorful satin ribbons, wrapped with multi-colored woolen threads for knitting.
  • Small toys are also useful: dinosaurs, cars, cubes with letters.

For wooden furniture

Handles wrapped with jute twine will harmoniously combine with the wood. Medium-sized stones (pebbles) of different shapes will look unusual. Make a hole in the stone and thread a rope through it. In a women's room, beads and pink buttons would be appropriate as handles on furniture. If there are wine or champagne corks left after the feasts, then you should not throw them away and use them in the mentioned capacity. The nautical theme involves the use of lengths of rope that can be dyed to your desired color. Twine wound in the form of a curl on a hook looks harmonious in loft-style houses. Old handles - metal or wooden - are painted bronze, creating an aged and gilded effect.

Entrance door

  • The door of an old country house will be decorated with a handle made from a wrench. At the ends it will be held on by bolts screwed into the door. Coat all parts with black paint.
  • Another option is a short-link steel chain, which is attached to the tree using a metal strip and self-tapping screws.
  • A mystery door is when, instead of a handle, you come across a padlock attached with a hook.

For kitchen utensils

Materials for decoration can be spoons, forks, even paint brushes. After disinfection, pumice stones for feet can be nailed to the doors of the kitchen unit.

Workshop, tool shed

Instead of a handle, attach a shovel, a pitchfork, a claw hammer, and branches to the door. A material such as copper pipes would be appropriate. Handles from old faucets will last for decades if you attach them to bathroom doors.

Decoupage

Paint the handles with white paint, cover them with PVA glue and glue them with pieces of napkin for decoupage.

PS This way you can update your home decor. The variety of available materials gives a lot of scope for imagination. In addition to the unique design, such things save money.

In this case, the handle can be a rope inserted into the door in the form of a loop or satin ribbons. Although such pens will not last long, they will look very original and unusual, and children will not get hurt on them.

Handles in the form of branches

The version of such a door handle is quite interesting and original. Thus, the two loops should be located vertically 30 centimeters from each other. A branch (initially processed) is inserted into them and secured. In this case, the handle can be dangerous, so it needs to be properly processed. This option looks unusual and family-like.

A door handle made of cement sounds strange, doesn't it? This way you can cast the shape you need and replace the round door handle with it. Material selection

A product made of oak or beech will be the most durable. A linden handle is the worst conductor of heat and is suitable for a door to a bathhouse. In the southern regions, an elm branch can serve as a good material. In middle and northern latitudes it is appropriate to use birch.

How to make door handles

When making a wooden handle with your own hands from a tree branch, it is definitely necessary to remove the bark. The semi-finished board should be thoroughly sanded, first with coarse and then fine sandpaper.

I hope that the proposed options and tips for making a pen will be useful and productive for you. Of course, it’s nice to touch every day with your hand something that you yourself have done, and done well!

If the product is intended for the entrance panel, it is made from strong, good quality wood. There are recommendations to use coniferous wood, because, among other things, they exude a pleasant aroma and have an antibacterial effect, and the material itself is inexpensive, and you can also make a box from it.

Wood material

Options for wood material from which to make an excellent door handle:

  1. Oak is a durable material, and products made from it are the same. oak is resistant to mechanical stress, looks respectable and will suit the entrance group (leaf and frame) made of oak in a country cottage.
  2. Beech is a valuable material, its properties are equal to oak. A distinctive feature is its uniform texture.
  3. Poplar is distinguished by bactericidal properties, which is why such door fittings are used to decorate the door in the bathhouse.
  4. Linden has a calming effect on the human body. This material is often used in the bedroom.

Creative furniture and door handles

When you make furniture yourself, you understand that the image and quality of the product depends on such seemingly trifles as the length and diameter of nails, the shape of screw heads, etc. Against the background of such “little things”, the handles are already beginning to seem almost the main motif in the product. And then, looking closely at them, you never cease to be amazed at the imagination of the creators of these small miracles.

So I decided to share photos of the most unusual pens, in my opinion. And how many “ordinary” ones there are!
