You just need to acquire the necessary material and some tools, most of which can be found at home. An ax case allows you to keep the weapon with you and also protects you from accidental cuts from a sharp blade.

Wooden case

Some people make an ax case from scrap wood or thick plywood. This type of case can be seen in the fairy tale film “Three Fat Men” at the executioner.

It is an ordinary box in the shape of an axe. These are actually two halves on hinges.

Required tools and materials

sheet of thick plywood 8-10 mm;
wooden blocks 10×10 mm;
glue;
piano hinges or small door hinges;
screws, small nails;
jigsaw;
hacksaw or saw;
hammer.

First you need to decide on the design. It is recommended to use a standard configuration - it will be difficult for a beginner to make a sheath with additional compartments and sections.

Then choose the material of manufacture - leather, wood, thick fabric.

It is not recommended to make the structure from plastic - there is a possibility of burrs appearing on the inside, which will lead to constant scratching of the blade.

Manufacturing stages:

Sample. A thick sheet of paper is folded in half and a knife is placed on it. We trace the contours taking into account the seam allowance on the side of the sharp edge. For a leather knife sheath this is approximately 10 mm. It is better to make the fastening separately so that you can dismantle it and install another one.
Preparation. The source material is cut according to the template, and allowances for the connection are taken into account. Wooden scabbards are made without them, since the halves are often glued together with special glue. The insertion of the blade is checked - it should not experience resistance, but at the same time the backlash is minimal.
Insert. It is located on the inside, on the side of the sharpened blade. The recommended material of manufacture is soft wood or thick felt. This is necessary to maintain the sharpness of the blade. This is one of the additional functions that a leather sheath should have.
Wearing method. The most common is hanging. On a wooden or leather sheath, a loop is made at the top of the structure. It is attached to the belt. The horizontal position is convenient for small blades. In addition to the top loop, another one is made, at the other edge of the structure.

To protect against moisture, the surface of the manufacturing material can be treated with special compounds. It is important that they do not have a negative effect on the steel - do not lead to rusting or rapid wear of the blade.

Leather

The easiest way to make your own is a leather sheath. Material: saddle leather or rawhide. They are easy to process and retain their shape. The stitching ensures a tight fit between the edges. This can be done with an awl or with an overlocker.

For this type of sheath you will need the following materials and tools:

Awl or overlocker. If this is a one-time production, you can stop at an awl.
Thread up to 0.7 mm thick. It is treated with paraffin for better glide.
Glue and thinner. The seam is treated with this composition so that the case for the folding knife has maximum tightness and reliability.
Felt liner. An alternative is to install a plastic insert.

The stitched components are tested for strength, and the homemade sheath must be comfortable. The knife can be removed without effort; to secure it, you can install a small rubber insert on the inner surface, closer to the loop. She will press the blade, preventing the knife from falling out when walking.

Wooden

How to make a knife case from wood, and in what cases would it be advisable? This design has better aesthetic qualities than a leather product. But in terms of performance characteristics it is inferior to them. To make a knife sheath, hardwoods are taken from wood - walnut, oak, beech. They are difficult to process, but the quality will be optimal.

Wooden scabbards are made according to the following scheme:

The outline of the blade is cut out on two dies. Its dimensions should be 2-5 mm larger than the blade dimensions.
The dies are cut, the inner surface is processed with a chisel. The processing depth is 1-2 mm greater than the thickness of the blade. Then sanding with sandpaper and polishing.
Connecting workpieces and checking the fit of weapons.
Gluing two parts. For this, standard wood adhesives are used.
External surface treatment.

Wooden scabbards are difficult to produce, but subsequently you can apply a pattern or design to their surface, treat it with varnishes or paints. A leather loop is mounted on the belt for fastening.

You can also make a knife sheath from fabric. But such homemade products will not last long, since additional processing will be required to improve their performance. This may affect the condition of the blade.

Preparing the template

When you have ready-made material, you can begin to create the ax itself. To do this, they think over and make a sketch of the handle, thanks to which the manufacturing process of the product in question is facilitated. The shape of the ax is determined by the type of tool. If a handle is required for a light ax weighing 0.8-1 kg, then its length is 0.4-0.6 m. The length of heavier ones can reach 0.6-0.9 m. Axes are classified according to their purpose:

carpentry;
lumberjacks;
loppers;
cleavers;
butcher's

Based on the purpose of the tool, the length of the ax will depend. When making it, you should adhere to the following rules:

to prevent the ax handle from slipping while working with an axe, the tail should be slightly wider than the handle itself;
the cleaver's ax handle is made 0.75-0.95 m long, while for a carpenter's ax it is 0.5 m long;
10 cm is added to the length of the handle for allowance. This part is cut off after attaching the butt.

The future handle of the desired shape and size is drawn on cardboard, after which the image is transferred to wood and cut out with carpentry tools.

Creating a case will require a dense piece of leather, which will have high-quality flesh - part of the skin, the processing of which determines the service life of the finished product. You can select the necessary material at any store that specializes in shoe repair. Today, the most suitable materials for making an ax cover are the so-called saddle cloths and “collars”. These types of natural leather are obtained by cutting from the spine and neck of the animal. These parts are characterized by high levels of strength and reliability.

When choosing the required size of a piece of leather, it is necessary to take into account the thickness of the material around the entire perimeter, since any abrasion can lead to the fact that the case will not serve its owner for long. Due to the fact that the material used is quite thick, ordinary scissors, even the sharpest ones, most likely will not work. Therefore, it is recommended to give preference to metal scissors or a carpenter’s knife. The material is cut exclusively from the wrong side of the material. This is due to the fact that the skin there is more elastic and easier to cut.

It is permissible to transfer the pattern on the wrong side of the leather using a regular pen or marker. But in no case should you do this from the front side of the material, since even a simple pencil leaves a mark that is difficult to remove. If you have smooth skin, it is recommended to use tailor's chalk or a small bar of soap.

You need to choose a shoe thread that has coated fiber. This guarantees the reliability of the connection and ensures that a sharp ax blade will not cut through the seams, and the wax layer will protect the product from moisture. When working with leather products, so-called gypsy needles are often used. They are very easy to use. But if they are unavailable, you can use a regular crochet hook. An awl will also cope with the task. Thus, to create a case you will need to acquire the following elements:

a piece of high-quality genuine leather;
threads treated with wax;
special adhesive composition;
carpenter's knife or metal scissors;
clasp;
a grinding device for processing the edges of the material (if you don’t have one, you can do the same procedure with a regular stationery knife).
