How to make a snow shovel with your own hands

A snow shovel today is relatively inexpensive. But still, many people are interested in whether it is possible to make a snow shovel yourself.

Of course, almost anyone who has the appropriate materials, tools and at least a minimum of skills to work with them can construct such a shovel. But in this case, you can only make a wooden shovel. To make plastic or metal, you will need not only materials, but also special stamping equipment. So, to make a shovel with your own hands you will need:

You will also need a jigsaw or hacksaw, a plane, a hammer, pliers, a set of screws, sandpaper and a meter.

As is already clear, a large sheet of plywood will serve as the base for the shovel. It does not undergo any additional processing. But you will have to work with the block. Arm yourself with a jigsaw and a plane to give it the desired shape: exactly match the length of the plywood, one side should be completely flat and the other slightly rounded. To make it look better, you can sand the block with sandpaper.

The picture shows the necessary materials to create a shovel

Now you can proceed to processing the cuttings. Its length should be from 150 to 180 centimeters. The new shovel should be comfortable for you to work with, so base it on your height and habits. The handle should also be treated with sandpaper so that there are no protrusions and splinters, which can easily injure you during work. Make sure that there are no knots on the handle, otherwise it will fail much earlier than expected.

Connect the block to the plywood so that its rounded part is adjacent to it. Place a long, thin strip of tin on top. Using self-tapping screws, connect all three parts into a single product. It is better to use at least 6–8 screws, then the load on each of them will be minimal.

we connect the block, plywood and cuttings

Using a jigsaw, cut a small semicircle on the block, the size corresponding to the handle; it should be half buried. Align the block with the handle so that the tip of the handle rests on the plywood approximately in the middle of the sheet. Remove the handle and saw off a piece of it at such an angle so that it fits as tightly as possible to the plywood. Align them again and make sure that the cutting is perfectly aligned with the plywood. If not, repeat the procedure, increasing the angle.

The video shows the entire process of making a snow shovel with your own hands. When you have achieved the desired result, install a small piece of tin (3 x 2 cm) on the opposite side of the plywood. Connect the sheet metal, plywood and handle with two self-tapping screws.

Turn the shovel over and place a 65 x 2 cm tin strip on the block. Secure with 4–6 self-tapping screws. Carefully bend the hanging edges and tighten them on the sides of the bar.

All that remains is to strengthen the front part of the plywood with tin, then the shovel will not crack when it hits the ice. Place the tin on the plywood, wrap it on both sides so that it covers the shovel by about 3-4 cm on each side. Gently pinch the tin with pliers until it fits snugly against the wood.

you can take the side cover from an old system unit as a piece of tin

That's all! The shovel is ready and you can start working with it.

How to make a snow shovel on wheels

Metal shovels win in terms of strength, but they are heavy for clearing snow. The only exception is lightweight aluminum. Soft metal is great for a scoop. Let's look at how to make a snow shovel from sheet aluminum:

  • It is better to make an aluminum scoop with sides. When applying markings to a sheet, the shelves should be marked on three sides of the workpiece. The handle will pass through the backboard, so its height should be 1–2 cm greater than the thickness of the wooden element.
  • Aluminum cuts easily. For cutting, metal scissors, an electric jigsaw are suitable, or in extreme cases, you can use a grinder. On the cut out fragment, the sides are folded on three sides. A hole with a diameter equal to the thickness of the handle is pre-drilled in the rear shelf.
  • A nest for the handle is attached to the center of the scoop with rivets. It is made from a piece of sheet aluminum. Place the workpiece on the edge of the handle and try to press its edges down. Next, the aluminum plate is tapped with a hammer until a semicircle is extruded. The result will be a scoop, as shown in the photo.

We suggest you read: Brew fresh hawthorn in a thermos

Now all that remains is to take the cutting, pass it through the hole in the back side of the scoop and insert it into the nest. To prevent the made shovel from flying off while throwing snow, the end of the handle is fixed to the socket with a self-tapping screw.

The auger shovel is characterized by high productivity, but it is not easy to assemble. First, you need to draw the correct drawings. Secondly, you need to understand the principle of operation of the auger. A diagram of the factory mechanism can be seen in the photo. We will now look into the operation of auger snow removal equipment.

So, let's start with the fact that the working mechanisms themselves - the augers - are installed inside the steel snow collection chamber. Its lower edge moves along the hard surface of the road exactly as a bulldozer blade does. At this time, layers of snow are captured. Rotating screws direct it to the upper part of the chamber, where the outlet pipe is located.

The rotation of the augers directs the snow to the outlet pipe, but they are not able to push it out of the snow receiving chamber. The tossing blades are responsible for this work. They rotate together with the auger, pushing the supplied snow into the opening of the pipe.

Using the principle of a factory analogue, you can make a homemade auger snow blower. The semicircular body of the snow receptacle can be bent from galvanized steel. A hole is cut in the center or side and an outlet pipe is installed. The sidewalls need to be strong, because the bearings of the rotor mechanism will be attached to them. Textolite or moisture-resistant plywood are suitable for their manufacture.

To make the auger, take a steel rod or pipe with a diameter of 20 mm. This will be the shaft. The blades can be welded from sheet steel or made from thick rubber. In the second option, steel strips need to be welded onto the shaft. The rubber blades will then be bolted to them.

When manufacturing an auger, it is important to maintain the same spiral pitch of the blades and choose the correct direction of rotation. If the outlet pipe is installed in the center of the chamber, then a rectangular throwing blade made of metal with a thickness of at least 5 mm is welded in the middle of the shaft.

Now all that remains is to attach the hubs to the side walls of the chamber, attach the bearings to the shaft and insert the auger into place.

The tool can be used manually, like a shovel. To do this, wheels are attached to the side of the body, and a handle is attached to the back of the camera. For large dimensions, the auger shovel is attached to the front of the walk-behind tractor.

Any snow removal tool is needed only in winter. The rest of the time it is stored in a dry place, preferably away from heating devices.

You may hear the opinion that you can only buy an aluminum scoop, but you won’t be able to make it yourself. This is not so - a do-it-yourself snow shovel with an aluminum tray can be made at home without much difficulty. To do this we do the following:

  1. We process and shape a sheet of aluminum. We cut out the blank for the tray with a hacksaw or grinder.
  2. Installation of additional metal strips. For structural rigidity, shanks are attached along the edge of the working blade. This improves the design and prevents damage. To install the strips, use a rivet gun.
  3. Handle attachment. To install a device on a seat tray, take two aluminum strips and place them on the holder. The ends of the strips are pressed to the bucket with a hammer. Holes are made and fastening is done with rivets. The handle is varnished.

Achievements of progress - to the masses

A few decades ago, a shovel with a motor was found only in jokes. But today the most amazing and strange things have firmly entered our lives. Therefore, every person should know about such a cunning tool as an electric shovel.

Of course, this device doesn’t look too much like a shovel. Rather, it has something in common with a regular lawn mower. You need to hold the shovel by the handle, pressing lightly from above, so that the screw rake in as much snow as possible. The captured snow is thrown far to the side, where it will not cause unnecessary trouble.

Before purchasing, you should seriously consider whether you really need this tool. After all, its cost usually starts from 5 thousand rubles and can be much higher, depending on the manufacturer and power. Therefore, it is worth making such a purchase in cases where it is necessary to regularly clear snow from an area of tens of square meters. Then an electric shovel will help you save a lot of time and effort. A serious advantage is the minimal energy consumption: you just walk around the area, lightly pressing on the shovel, and it does all the work for you.

The light weight – from 6 kilograms – makes it easy for both men and women, adults and teenagers to work with the electric shovel. Of course, when working, you should exercise some caution so as not to get injured by the powerful screw of the device.

Winter, after the autumn slush and the dirty gray inhospitable surface of the earth, recently covered with grass, pleases us with the first snow and brightened streets. Children do not crawl out of the snowdrifts, and babies look in surprise at the white flakes continuously falling to the ground, at their faces and small palms...

Fiskars snow shovel

But not everyone is not always happy about snow. Time will pass and not only the wipers in the morning, but also we, in a hurry going to work, will curse and grumble: “Well, where did so much snow come from?” And dream of having such a miracle snow shovel that would, without much difficulty, remove everything right down to the asphalt. But, alas, they have not yet invented a shovel-bulldozer so that each wiper is motorized. And that’s why simple homemade plywood shovels with a tin edge are still in use, and craftsmen are still thinking about new ideas for hand shovels for snow removal. In the meantime, we see various new plastic shovels that can generally be used comfortably to capture large volumes of snow.

Garden tools and other products in this Chinese store.

A lightweight snow shovel is quite convenient, but if your strength allows, it is better to buy a regular Fiskars snow shovel. It is equipped with a wide bucket made of plastic, so it is quite lightweight. To strengthen the edge of the Fiskars snow shovel bucket, a steel blade is attached. The tool is quite practical; it can be used to clean large areas without getting tired, since the weight of the shovel is a little more than 1 kg.

Plow for clearing snow from areas by hand

A more advanced means of small-scale mechanization for cleaning is a manual snow blade from the Kobzarenka Plant company from Ukraine. This, one might say, is a manual excavator; a person pushes the bucket of such an excavator, and to facilitate his work, the friction force is reduced with the help of wheels.

Characteristics of a manual snow blower: Blade: metal sheet 2 mm, size LxW 1000x400 mm with a rubber plate at the bottom. Handle: T-shaped (pipe DN 20x2.8 mm with two rubber handles) Chassis: axle made of pipe DN 15x2.5 equipped with two pneumatic wheels measuring 260x85 mm. The design of the blade allows for adjustment of the angle of the working surface.

In the video, a manual snow removal blade from the Kobzarenka Plant company is in operation.

A slightly unusual snow shovel “Sno Wovel”

Foreigners have come up with a somewhat strange, innovative shovel on a wheel for clearing snowdrifts. It's called “Sno Wovel”. It can easily be classified as a snow miracle shovel, because like its summer counterparts, it is designed to help relieve the back from stress and injuries. Well, since a lever is used, by applying a little effort, you can pick up large volumes of snow with a shovel and carry them and even throw them away. Manufacturers estimate that the required force is reduced by 80 percent thanks to the lever system and wheel. Like riding a bicycle, we travel a long distance, and we are several times less tired than walking.

Technical features of the shovel. Weight: 19.5 kg; Total length: 188 cm; Height adjustment; Tire diameter: 89 cm; Scoop width: 66 cm. Overall dimensions for storage and transportation: 86 cm x 20 cm x 50 cm

Look how cute the child laughs as he looks at his dad deftly handling this excavator

Scraper on wheels Snow Bully

Another interesting model of a snow scraper on wheels that costs $250-300.

This Snow Bully 4 Wheel Scraper is even more convenient, but the price is unreasonably high.

The video shows Snow Bully in action. It seems to be very comfortable to work on and can double as a cart in the summer.

Winter has come, a lot of snow has fallen, it needs to be cleared. So Anton Weber came up with an idea for the craftsmen. It offers a snow scraper based on a 200 liter iron barrel. I took half the container as a dump. It is better to use a barrel of paints and varnishes; its head and bottom are rolled. Just cut it in half with a grinder and you get a blade. If you want to reduce the weight of the device, you can cut it into three parts and use pine handles. More about this in the second part of the story and video about the invention.

Design features of a snow scraper

The barrel shown in the video is a barrel of some kind of lubricant with a removable lid. Therefore, the side where the lid is located had to be screwed to the barrel itself with self-tapping screws. I fitted bars on the side. On one side there are stiffening ribs, on the other there is a support platform under the guide. The last of the birch cuttings, the same - the handle. The top and bottom, where the handle is attached, are secured with a suspension.

I followed the path of least resistance and did not invent complex mechanisms. I did it the simplest way. It turned out to be a good working tool. This scraper does its job well. It's not easy. But at the same time, not very heavy. A grown man can handle it. If you cannot move it along with the snow, then since the handle is wide, you can stand with two people and push it. The dump can be modified. The sector can be reduced from 180 degrees to 120-130. It is not used. Therefore, in order to make the structure lighter, you can cut it off and also replace the ribs with a smaller section.

Cheap and cheerful! The best outdoor crossfit is to clean the snow.

Regarding the price of the barrel. Beushnaya costs 200 rubles. Since you only need one half, you can make two snow blowers from one purchased container. Cuttings for 20-30 rubles. Plus consumables. The cost of such a scraper is a maximum of 100 - 200 rubles. The master assembled it in 1.5 hours. If everything is in stock, a maximum of one hour of work.

The most important part is the blade on the bottom. When removing snow, the edge will cling to all sorts of pebbles and other irregularities. I tried it first without the edge, but it was a pain because it clings to everything in its path, plus there is a lot of wear on the edge. It will crumple and then begin to come apart at the seams. But with such a rib it’s normal. Can be lined with sheet metal to improve glide. The model is working. You can clean snow with this scraper.

Refinement of the scraper

I cut a slice at 60 degrees. It turned out that the blade sector is approximately 120 degrees. That is, from one barrel you can already make 3 scrapers. I left the side edge as a sector; I didn’t cut it along the chord, because the side is so high and wide, snow won’t fall out of it.

It is advisable to take Russian-made barrels that are currently being produced. Their metal is thin. The old Soviet ones are too thick, the snow removal tool will turn out to be heavy. Birch cuttings. They are mainly used on blades because they work on bending and are stronger than pine. They are not needed on the scraper. Birch is about 1.5 times heavier than pine, so if you can get your hands on it, the master will change both the guides and the handle to pine ones. Then the scraper will be completely airy.

Although a huge amount of snow falls in the Altai Territory, this is only the 4th snow region. And somewhere there are 5, 6, where such precipitation falls 1.5 times more. So stock up on shovels and scrapers and face the winter fully armed.

In winter, snow drifts interfere with normal movement. As a result of snowfalls, the surface of yards and lawns is completely covered.

This reason should force us to take care of the timely removal of snow, not only for the sake of order, but also for the safety of movement.

In order to prevent snowdrifts, roads need to be cleaned in a timely manner. Cleaning snow is a difficult and tedious job, but if you have convenient and effective equipment, this process can be significantly speeded up.

Currently, the domestic market offers a wide variety of winter equipment for snow removal. But we will tell you how to make different types of scrapers for snow removal with your own hands.

Manual snow scraper

The peculiarity of the manual scraper is its ease of use, as well as the low material waste when creating the scraper.

A hand scraper is indispensable for clearing areas of ice, but the runners will have to be pulled with difficulty along the sidewalk and ground. Therefore, it is better to make a manual scraper on wheels.

Let's look at the main stages of creating a manual scraper for removing snow on wheels:

1. To create a scraper blade, we need a pipe with a diameter of 27 cm, then we cut out a sector from it. As a result, we get the required blade.

2. Use an unwanted baby stroller to create a frame

3. We make stops using unnecessary water pipes. We create slots for the wheel axles in the pipes on one side, and weld them to the scraper blade on the other.

4. Take metal corners and create ears for fastening the racks.

5. To control the height of the handle, we make three holes in the upper part of the racks.

6. In order not to spoil the asphalt, you can install a protective conveyor belt to the lower parts of the blade. We paint the scraper.

Result: the scraper is very easy to use and cleans snow quickly and conveniently. Thanks to the conveyor belt, the asphalt and concrete surface are not scratched.

Snow scraper brush

A snow scraper brush is one of the most versatile tools. Its configuration can be different, the main thing is that it fits comfortably in the hand.

What to make brush bristles from.

Often, artificial bristles, similar to thick fishing line, are used for brushes.

You can, of course, make a brush from natural bristles, but then you will have to be generous financially. The stiffness of the brush will depend on the task at hand.

The scraper should not be heavy in weight, otherwise your hands will get tired quickly. Therefore, when creating a scraper, pay attention to its weight, since this is one of the main characteristics.

Plastic snow scrapers

The advantage of a plastic scraper over others is that snow practically does not stick to it and it is much lighter in weight, so working with it is much easier.

A plastic scraper, like other types of scrapers, can be created in any size. A small scraper can only be used for ice, but a wide one can clear most of the area.

A plastic scraper is suitable for clearing snow from not only roads, but also roofs.

Metal scraper for snow removal

Steps to create a metal snow scraper:

1. We take a metal sheet measuring 1500x800 mm, a 3-meter pipe for the handle, as well as 2 parts of a metal angle, 1 m long, for future runners.

2. Bend the tips of the runners and attach the handle. At a distance of a couple of millimeters in front of the posts, we install 2 pins, then attach the sheet to them.

3. Firmly install the upper part of the scraper using clamps.

Clamps will help control the height and are able to secure the side panel.

By the way, the scraper can be made foldable if there is a need to transport it in transport.

With the help of a special tool like a scraper, snow removal becomes better and faster.

A homemade snow scraper is not complicated in its design, and making it will not be difficult.

How to remove snow from the roof of a private house - Scraper.

Huge snowdrifts that form on the roofs of houses pose a danger to surrounding people and the building itself. Therefore, knowing how to clear the roof of a house from snow will never be superfluous.

The simplest cleaning methods

If the roof has a large slope or complex configuration, it is better to call a specialist who knows exactly how to clear snow from the roof of any private house. In other cases, you can try to do it yourself.

To begin with, you should use a special scraper with an extended handle or a special device that allows you to clean the roof while on the ground. However, this method of removing snow from the roof of a private house is not always effective. Otherwise, you will still have to climb onto the roof. To remove snow from the roof you will need a long ladder, a reliable cable and a shovel. It is better to start work from the top of the roof and throw off the snow evenly on both sides.

Using scrapers, a special design with a backing that prevents snow from damaging the drainage system. But if problems with the roof do not arise due to a large amount of snow, then it is better to leave the snow on the roof.

Application of technologies for snow removal.

How else can you remove snow from the roof of a private house? Some use the vibration method for this. It requires a strong rafter system, otherwise it may be partially destroyed.

There is also a thermal method, which involves laying a cable over the surface of the roof, which helps melt the snow. However, it is better to use it as a preventative measure, and not as a way to clear snow from the roof of a private house.

General rules and requirements for manufacturing

A snow shovel must meet a number of characteristics - consider this before manufacturing:

  • durable bucket that can withstand snow loads;
  • the depth of the bucket corresponds to the length of the handle, the surface is preferably ribbed to facilitate movement on the snow;
  • handle with a handle at the end and a rubber insert to prevent slipping;
  • cutting length suitable for growth.

A homemade snow shovel is no worse than a store-bought one

When designing the design of a shovel, if possible, avoid the folding handle - it reduces the strength of the product. Choose the width of the bucket depending on your physical characteristics. A wide shovel can remove more snow, but there's no point if you can't lift it. Having drawn up the project, start making the tool.

The more convenient the shovel, the easier it is to remove snow.

Traditional snow shovel

The easiest option to make with your own hands is a wooden snow shovel. A little more difficult are plastic and metal tools, the most difficult are snow rollers and auger cleaners.

Plywood shovel with wooden handle

To create a wooden shovel, you will need a sheet of OSB or plywood, a 50x8 cm board, aluminum strips, as well as a cutting - you can buy a ready-made one at a hardware store. Prepare the following tools:

  • sandpaper;
  • jigsaw and files;
  • self-tapping screws 4 cm long and small nails;
  • drill with toothed bits;
  • screwdriver;
  • impregnation for wood.

Wooden snow removal tool

How to make a snow shovel:

  1. From a sheet of plywood 6 mm thick, use a jigsaw to cut out a square base of the bucket measuring 50x50 cm.
  2. Cut a crescent 50 cm long from the board. The width of the central part should be 8 cm, and the side parts should be 5 cm.
  3. In the center of the board, drill a round hole with a diameter equal to the diameter of the handle. To attach the handle at an angle, drill a hole with a 1 cm bevel.
  4. Insert the handle into the hole and measure the length of the handle to suit your height. Saw the cutting to the desired length at an angle and, if necessary, sand it with sandpaper.
  5. Secure the plywood sheet and the half-moon back wall with nails.
  6. In the center of the scoop, draw a straight line along which you will attach the handle.
  7. Place the sawn-off cutting into the hole, align it along the line and screw it onto the self-tapping screws. To prevent the plywood from cracking, pre-drill holes.
  8. Make a metal reinforcement for the scoop - fasten an aluminum strip 5-7 cm wide along the bottom edge. To do this, bend the strip in half, place it on the base and hit it with a hammer several times. Bend the protruding edges with a hammer as well. Drive three or four nails along the length of the strip to strengthen the structure.
  9. With the second strip, strengthen the connection between the plywood sheet and the back wall, and with the third strip, strengthen the connection between the bucket and the handle.

Classics of the genre

Treat the shovel with antifungal impregnation and leave for a day. In a day it will be ready for use.

Where to find materials if you don’t want to spend money:

  • plywood - ask at the nearest sawmill;
  • handle - make it yourself from a 50x50 mm block or detach it from an unnecessary tool;
  • aluminum strips - cut from tin cans;
  • impregnation - replace with unused paint residues.

Metal helper made from a baking sheet or lid

Metal shovels are often rejected as they are considered expensive to manufacture and excessively heavy. In fact, you can make a snow shovel with your own hands for free, using materials and tools available on the farm.

You will need:

  • aluminum lid with a diameter of 60 cm or a baking tray 60x40 cm;
  • metal tape 3 mm thick;
  • wooden stalk;
  • grinder or jigsaw with a metal file;
  • electric drill;
  • rivet gun.

Saw off one side of the old baking sheet to create a base for the ladle.

How to make a snow shovel:

  1. Prepare an aluminum base for the bucket. Using a jigsaw or grinder, saw off the edges of the lid or baking sheet so that you get a square measuring 50x50 cm or a rectangle 40x60 cm.
  2. Reinforce the bucket. Take a metal strip and cut three strips equal to the length of the ladle, and then three more equal to the width. In each strip, drill holes every 4 cm with a drill. Place the strips on the bucket in the form of a grid and secure with rivets.
  3. Attach the cutting to the ladle and measure the length. Use a jigsaw to saw off the excess part of the handle.
  4. Cut 2 strips 8-10 cm long from a metal strip. Using a hammer, hammer the strips into the handle at a distance of 7-10 cm from each other, and secure the protruding edges to the ladle with rivets.

Plastic is not afraid of moisture

Coat the wooden part with varnish or anti-fungal impregnation to increase the service life of the tool. A snow shovel will last for several years if used strictly for its intended purpose in winter.

Plastic toiler from an old canister

The easiest way to make a plastic snow shovel with your own hands is to attach the finished bucket blade to a wooden handle.

Advantages of plastic over wood and metal:

  • the material is durable - does not rust or rot;
  • The weight of a plastic shovel is half that of a wooden one;
  • a wide range of ready-made ladles in stores.

Ready-made bucket from the store

When buying a bucket base in a store, check its strength. Try bending it - it shouldn't break. From available materials for production, you can use plastic barrels and canisters with a wall thickness of 6 mm or more.

How to make a snow shovel from plastic:

  1. Using a jigsaw, cut out a base measuring 50x50 cm from the barrel. Do not pay attention to the unevenness - they will grind off the first time you clear the snow.
  2. In the center of the scoop, draw a straight line along which the cutting will be attached.
  3. Attach the handle to the base of the scoop and secure with a countersunk self-tapping screw.
  4. Place aluminum or steel strips over the handle and secure with rivets.
  5. Coat the handle with varnish.

If you do not plan to remove large volumes of snow, you can attach the handle to nails and reinforce it with wire.

Advantages of homemade snow shovels on wheels

Scrapers with wheels are not an invention of folk craftsmen. Similar factory-made shovels of various designs are sold in stores. The popularity of the inventory is due to its advantages:

  1. If we talk about a homemade snow scraper on wheels, then the advantage here is the minimal cost of its production. A tool of this type is expensive in the store. You can assemble it yourself almost free of charge, you just need to find the right material. You will only have to buy wheels if there is nowhere to remove them.
  2. Shoveling is a pleasure. A person does not have to lift snow on himself, creating a load on his back and stomach. When clearing the territory, the muscles of the legs and arms work mainly.
  3. Tools with wheels make it possible to complete work much faster than with a regular shovel or scraper.
  4. Maneuverability is another positive quality that simplifies the use of a shovel. Wheels allow you to overcome any obstacles in the form of holes and bumps. If you encounter a bump or a piece of ice on the way, just lift the bucket and move over the difficult area.

If desired, a homemade snow shovel on wheels will be a good winter entertainment. Snow removal can be turned into a family sport.

Snow removal equipment with wheels can be not only homemade, but also factory-made

To make the tool convenient and effective, you need to follow the rules and requirements during assembly. They are simple and will help you avoid common mistakes. Having decided to assemble a snow shovel on wheels with your own hands, from the general requirements for such equipment you should take a closer look at the following points:

  1. The ladle is made of durable material. It must withstand the load from dry and wet snow, and not deform when colliding with ice or other obstacles.
  2. I calculate the depth of the bucket in direct proportion to my physical capabilities, the size of the wheels and the design of the handle. If a person is in poor health, he will not move much snow. The same goes for structural elements. A weak handle will bend under heavy load, and small wheels will slip.
  3. The shovel handle is equipped with a comfortable handle for gripping with the hand. It is optimal to consider rubber anti-slip pads.
  4. The length of the handle is determined individually according to your height. It is optimal to equip a shovel with a wide bucket with two wheels for better stability
  5. The number of wheels depends on personal preference. However, here you need to take into account the width of the bucket. There is no point in placing a narrow shovel on two wheels. It will be uncomfortable to use the tool. If the bucket is wide, then a pair of wheels will be required for stability.

Advice! If the goal of cleaning is to perfectly clear the area of snow, then the scraper can be improved by adding a brush. It is placed behind the bucket. In one pass, the scraper removes the bulk of the snow, and the brush sweeps away the remaining snow.

Particular attention is paid to the design of the handle. Telescopic and folding options are not suitable. Such handles bend under load and often fail. It is optimal to use a solid lever. If the shovel needs to be transported in the trunk of a car, then it is better to make the handle removable with a reliable bolt fastening.

To assemble a snow shovel on wheels with your own hands, it is not necessary to draw up a drawing. However, the diagram will help give a better idea of the design. An example of a drawing can be found in the relevant literature or on the Internet. It is best to copy the diagram yourself from a real instrument. This will give you a clearer idea of where and which node is installed, how it is positioned, and secured.

The diagram gives a clear idea of all the components, which will simplify the process of assembling the shovel

Once the drawing is developed, it is easier to determine what materials and tools will be required.

To assemble the scraper you need to prepare:

  1. One or two wheels. The quantity depends on the size and design of the shovel. They can be taken from an old car, stroller, or other mechanism. A bicycle with one large diameter wheel is used for a tool with a small bucket, which is convenient for cleaning narrow winding paths.
  2. Steel for the ladle. Rolled sheets, preferably galvanized, are suitable. The optimal metal thickness is 1 mm. You can use aluminum or stainless steel. If there is no sheet steel, use a grinder to saw through the body of a used washing machine, a barrel, a gas cylinder or a large-diameter pipe.
  3. Pipe for handle with a diameter of 20 mm. The frame can be welded from a profile tube of the same cross-section.
  4. Additional materials may require bolts and nuts, metal tires, angles, and a piece of rubber hose for the handle.

Since a snow scraper on wheels is made entirely of metal with your own hands, you will need the appropriate tool. To trim parts, use a grinder. The workpieces are connected by welding. You may also need an electric drill, wrenches, hammer, and pliers.

When all materials and tools are prepared, begin assembling the shovel. First of all, according to the drawing, blanks of the required size are cut. To avoid confusion, each element is marked with chalk.

In general terms, a homemade snow shovel on wheels is assembled in the following sequence:

  1. A rectangular blank for the ladle is cut out of sheet metal using a grinder. Where the bottom of the scraper will be, a bend 5-10 cm wide is made in its front side along its entire length. The angle is arbitrary, but small. At the bottom of the bucket they make a bend along its entire length so that it does not crash into the ground
  2. On the back side of the bucket, two rectangular frames are welded from a profile pipe. One element is attached to the top of the metal sheet, and the other element is attached to the bottom. The top frame is longer than the bottom. This arrangement allows you to weld a pipe handle to the crossbars at an angle. The jumper of the lower frame is also the axle on which the wheels are mounted. Extended frames increase the offset of the bucket relative to the wheels, thereby improving the balancing of the shovel
  3. The finished snow removal equipment is tested in operation. You may need to change the slope of the handle. This can be done easily by bending the tube slightly in the desired direction. If the bucket crashes into the ground, change the bending angle of its lower edge. By bending the handle and the lower edge of the bucket, convenient control of the tool is achieved

To ensure that a self-assembled snow shovel on wheels lasts longer and has an attractive appearance, the welding joints are cleaned with a grinder. The structure is treated with an anti-corrosion primer and painted.

Advice! To prevent the bucket from scratching the paving slabs, a rubber strip from a conveyor belt is attached to the lower edge with rivets.

In the absence of sheet steel, the ladle is made from a barrel. First, the container is opened with a grinder. If the barrel has a volume of 200 liters, then a segment from about a third of its part will be required. The workpiece already has a curved shape, so there is no need to bend the edge from below.

The frame for the shovel will be the frame of a wheelbarrow with one or two wheels.

The frame is welded from pipes, exactly as in the example of a sheet steel structure. If you have a car at home, then you should refuse unnecessary work. The body is simply removed from it, and a segment cut from a barrel is fitted in front. Moreover, the car will fit even with one wheel. At the end of winter, the instrument will be re-equipped, returning the body to its place.

It is impossible to clean narrow winding paths with a wide two-wheeled shovel. For such purposes, it is optimal to consider another device. It is made from one large diameter bicycle wheel.

A single-wheeled shovel is convenient for clearing snow from narrow paths

First, they create the shovel itself. You can take a ready-made factory-made plastic scoop. It is mounted on a long handle made of an aluminum tube. A T-shaped handle is attached to the other end for a two-handed grip. A hinge mechanism with a bicycle wheel is attached to the handle. The lever should rotate freely on the axis so that it is convenient to lift the shovel and throw away snow. The location of the hinge on the handle is determined individually, which depends on the diameter of the wheel.

Many still have Soviet washing machines in their dacha sheds. Their body is made in the shape of a barrel. If you cut it, you get a good blank for a ladle. If you need a narrow shovel, you can find even better material for it. The tank is hidden inside the washing machine body. It is made of stainless steel or aluminum alloy. The tank is opened in the same way with a grinder, cutting out a segment of the required size.

The shape of the Soviet washing machine is identical to the barrel

We suggest you familiarize yourself with How to make an auger for a snow blower with your own hands

The downside of the washing machine body is the thin tin. To prevent it from bending under the load, the ends of the semicircular bucket are sewn up with metal. You can install two wheels on the frame, and two on the shovel itself. The front wheels use a smaller diameter. Additionally, they will act as a limiter that prevents the edge of the bucket from cutting into the ground.

The stability of the snow removal tool will be given by a load of bricks placed between the frame and the bucket.

Making a snow shovel out of wood with your own hands is quite simple and quick. You will need a sheet of plywood measuring 0.5 by 0.5 meters. Thickness - 4-5 mm. You will also need aluminum strips and a finished cutting. For the cutting, you can take a square block with a cross-section of 5 cm and process it with a plane. Tools you will need:

  1. Fine grit sandpaper.
  2. Jigsaw (preferably electric).
  3. 40 mm self-tapping screws and small nails.
  4. Drill.
  5. Drill attachment for cutting holes (crown).
  6. Screwdriver.
  7. Primer for processing the finished product.
  8. Board 50x10x2 cm.

When all materials and tools are prepared, you can begin work. By checking the drawing prepared in advance, everything can be done in 1-1.5 hours. Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Cut a square base 0.5x0.5 m from a piece of plywood.
  2. The board needs to be cut into a crescent shape. There should be 10 cm in the center, and 4 cm on the sides.
  3. You need to cut an oblique hole in the center of the board so that the handle can be strengthened at an angle. The diameter should match the cutting.
  4. Insert the handle into the hole in the board. Measure the length and cut off the excess. Clean the cut area with sandpaper if necessary.
  5. Attach a sheet of plywood with small nails to the board on the cut side.
  6. Insert the finished cutting into the hole and screw it to the plywood with a self-tapping screw. To avoid cracking, it is better to drill holes first.
  7. Next you need to reinforce the shovel with metal. Bend a metal strip up to 10 cm wide in half. Place it on the edge of the scoop and tap it well with a hammer. Secure the entire structure with several nails.
  8. The second strip needs to be used to strengthen the connection between the bucket and the board.
  9. The third strip strengthens the joint between the handle and the bucket.
  1. Durability. The material will not rust or rot.
  2. Light weight. It is easy to work with, without much strain.
  3. Large selection of ready-made ladles on sale.
  1. Wheels from a cart.
  2. Sheet of steel 1−1.5 mm thick.
  3. Metal tube.
  4. Bulgarian.
  5. Welding machine.

Snow roller on wheels for quick removal

A type of snow shovel is a wheeled shovel, also called a “plow”. Key device requirements:

  • ease of use;
  • minimum physical activity;
  • minimum manufacturing cost.

Example of manual rollback for snow

To make a snow roller, you will need:

  • drawing or project;
  • two wheels for trolleys;
  • sheet steel 1 mm thick (you can use a metal pipe with a diameter of 30-40 cm);
  • steel tube with a diameter of 20-40 mm.
  • Bulgarian;
  • welding machine.

Procedure:

  1. Construct a recoil blade from sheet steel. The optimal length is 70 cm, width 40 cm. If you are using a pipe as the starting material, use a grinder to cut a piece of the required length and saw it lengthwise into two parts.
  2. Weld a 20x10 cm metal plate to the back of the blade. Drill three holes in it - one for the mounting bolt and two for the stopper that fixes the blade at a certain angle.
  3. Cut a stem from a steel tube. Select the length according to your own height.
  4. Weld two flanged metal plates along the bottom of the handle, having previously drilled holes in them for installation on the wheel axle.
  5. Weld a handle to the top part - a horizontal piece of tube 30-40 cm long.
  6. From a tube with a diameter of 30 mm, cut off a piece 60 cm long. Place the handle on the axle and secure it in the middle with locking rings. At the edges of the axle, secure the wheels at a distance of 50-55 cm from each other.
  7. Weld a horizontal tube to the lower end of the handle to attach the blade.
  8. Secure the blade to the tube with a bolt.
  9. Cover the finished snow dump with paint.

The rollback base can be made from a pipe

You can run a conveyor belt along the bottom of the blade for better glide. An alternative rollback option is a four-wheel one.

Manufacturing of parts

You need to start with the base for the shovel, since it is this part that sets the parameters for subsequent dimensions of the product.

The width of the web and the length of the metal fastening strips will depend on the length of the arc at the bottom of the rib.

We invite you to familiarize yourself with the ceiling in a log house with your own hands

From the scrap board we make a straight piece at the top and a semicircular piece at the bottom for the base.

On the upper edge, on the sides, we select recesses for the metal strip, which will go around the body after attaching the tin sheet.

Exactly in the middle we drill a through hole along the diameter of the handle and at an angle of 10–15%.

We cut out the scoop sheet 400x400 mm and drill holes at one edge with a diameter of 4 mm and a step of 3 cm according to the markings.

In order to avoid cutting yourself during installation, the sharp edges of the canvas around the perimeter are treated with emery cloth.

We cut a 15x450 mm strip from thicker 1.5–2 mm iron, bend it around the body of the scoop from below and bend the edges to the width of the selected grooves in the base.

In the resulting part, we drill holes with a diameter of 4 mm so that they coincide with the previously made holes in the scoop blade.

We cut out the top metal strip 400x15 mm and drill holes in it with a diameter of 4 mm.

If you can’t find an old cutting, then it can be made from a 40x40 mm block; it is chamfered on all four sides with a plane until a hexagon is obtained, and then the edges are removed with emery cloth.

For a more durable attachment to the canvas, the end of the handle is cut off on one side at an angle of 15 degrees, and at a distance of 50 mm from the same edge a hole is drilled for a fastening bolt.

DIY shovel with auger shaft

An auger is a kind of screw that rotates inside the scraper of a shovel as it moves. The snow travels in a spiral and is thrown to the side through the chute. Types of auger snow shovels:

  • manual single-stage - the auger rotates as it moves and the snow is thrown away due to the rotation of the shaft;
  • automatic rotary - the auger rotates due to the operation of the engine and is thrown into a chute from the fan.

The snow throw distance in rotor mechanisms is up to 12 meters, while the throw range and speed can be adjusted.

Auger Shovel

Manual snow removal unit

An auger snow shovel seems like a complicated mechanism, but you can make it yourself, even at home.

You will need:

  • sheet iron;
  • plywood;
  • metal rings and bearings;
  • screw;
  • two toothed sprockets;
  • drill;
  • welding machine.

Screw shaft factory

How to make a snow shovel with an auger:

  1. Assemble the scraper body. Make the back and side walls from sheet iron and weld them together. If welding is not possible, secure with bolts.
  2. Make holes in the sides and install the auger. You can also make it yourself by welding U-shaped plates of sheet iron to a pipe with a diameter of 5 cm at an angle of 180° to each other and attaching a spiral of sheet iron to them. The auger shaft must extend beyond the boundaries of the housing by at least 6 cm on each side.
  3. From a metal tube with a diameter of 30 mm, cut off a piece with a length equal to the length of the body. Weld an asterisk to the central part of the tube, and secure the wheels at the edges using locking rings.
  4. Weld a second sprocket onto the auger shaft and connect it with a chain to the first one on the wheel axle. Design a handle of optimal length and weld it to the body.

When driving on snow, the wheels will begin to spin, the rotation will be transmitted through the chain to the shaft, and the snow masses will recline.

Project of an auger snow blower for a walk-behind tractor

Mechanical snow blower with motor

The power of a mechanical snow removal tool is 6.5 horsepower, and its width is 50 cm, which is perfect for clearing paths on the site. The unit operates on a gasoline engine.

To make your own snow blower, you will need:

  • sheet iron;
  • gasoline engine, for example, from a walk-behind tractor;
  • metal tube for handle with a diameter of 1.5 cm;
  • plywood sheet 10 mm;
  • conveyer belt.

Assembly procedure for the unit:

  1. Make a screw shaft. Take a 2 cm thick pipe and cut it lengthwise to secure a metal snow shovel measuring 120x70 cm.
  2. Place bearings on the pipe and secure a 150 cm long conveyor belt.
  3. Make a frame from corners 5x5 cm and 2.5x2.5 cm. Attach the platform for the engine to it.
  4. Make a chute for discarding snow from a stainless steel or water pipe with a diameter of 160 mm. Select the length of the gutter depending on the required distance for throwing snow masses - the longer the pipe, the further the snow will be thrown.
  5. Use a belt drive to transfer torque from the motor - if the auger stops during operation, the belt will simply slip without affecting the motor.
  6. Form a body from sheet iron. The side walls can be made of plywood for convenience.
  7. Secure the auger in the housing and install it on the frame. Connect the motor to the auger with a belt and enjoy easy cleaning.
  8. For better gliding around the area, place the unit on wooden or plastic skis.

If you are using an engine with an air cooling system, cover the air hole in it with a mesh or a metal plate so that snow does not get inside during operation.

Snow bag on the roof. How to avoid problems. Correct arrangement of the valley.

Snow bagging is a common problem on complex roofs. Forms at the junctions of different roof planes. Simply put, in the inner corners of the roof. Especially on the north side. This place on the roof is called the valley.

Snow and ice accumulate in these places. Moreover, it can reach substantial thickness. And if on the southern side the snow bags melt under the sun, then on the northern side they lie and accumulate all winter until April.

And the problem is precisely that due to spring melting, if the roofing is not done correctly, water can easily seep into the house and ruin your interior.

Why is this happening?

This happens because during the day the snow on the roof begins to melt. Even in winter. The snow bag only grows and gradually becomes saturated with water. At night the water freezes. The snow bag turns into an ice plug and interferes with the free flow of water. Water accumulates and begins to leak under the outer valley strip.

How to avoid this?

Make the correct design of the valley.

The valley structure consists of three elements: continuous sheathing, lower and upper strips

Important point! The blue arrows show how the air should move. The roof must breathe!

Continuous sheathing is done due to the large snow load in these areas of the roof.

The top bar has a decorative function.

The bottom bar does all the work of collecting and draining water.

Upper strips are usually ordered along with the roofing.

The lower strips are factory-made, especially in roofs with a polymer coating such as ondulin.

Factory valley.

You can also order them from the company where you buy the roof. You draw the configuration, they will bend and cut everything for you. All that remains is to attach it in place.

But usually the bottom strip is made by the roofers themselves.

The bottom strip performs the most important part of the work of draining water, so we will consider the most common mistakes that are made when installing a valley.

Firstly. The bar is too narrow. The narrower the bar, the more likely it is that it will not hold water.

If this width will work for the southern side, then it is not enough for the northern side.

Sometimes, in order to save money, roofers or homeowners install a valley that is too narrow, and as a result, water gets inside the house. It is very difficult to fix this unit; you will need to remove all the roofing sheets lying on top.

It’s better to play it safe right away, in this case it’s completely justified.

And the size is good and the edges are curved.

Lay a wide valley with a side width of 50 cm and an overlap of at least 15 cm and the problem of leaks will never arise.

This is the right size! But for some reason the edges of the valley are not bent.

Secondly, this is the design of the unit itself. It's quite complicated.

It is important to remember that the roof must be ventilated.

The top figure shows two examples of laying an internal valley. The upper one is more reliable, the lower node can be freely used on the southern sides, for the northern side it is better to take the design of the upper node.

On seam roofs, a simple valley design is used.

Unlike other roofs, it is one and immediately has a decorative function.

On slate roofing, only one valley is also often used.

The method of fixing the valley depends on the type of coating.

In a seam roof, clamps are used; in others, as a rule, the valley is attached to a roofing screw.

A very important point. The edges of the inner valley should be curved inward. This side protects against water leakage into the roof space.

Remember one thing, it is better to assemble it once as it should be than to correct the jambs.

A properly assembled roof does not require any attention from the owners and serves well for many years.

Snow shovel for cleaning the roof

In winter, snow removal requires not only the paths of suburban areas, but also the roofs of buildings. It is also possible to design a snow shovel for the roof with your own hands.

Roof scraper with tongue

Iron scraper with tongue

A roof snow shovel is a U-shaped scraper with a handle attached to it and a plastic “tongue” for dumping snow masses. The design allows you to clean the roof without lowering the shovel down.

To make the tool you will need:

  • galvanized iron sheet;
  • pole 4 meters long;
  • bolts;
  • flexible strip of plastic.

Manufacturing procedure:

  1. From a sheet of galvanized metal, bend a U-shaped profile 40 cm wide, 60 cm long. The height of the side walls is 30 cm.
  2. Cut a metal strip 60 cm long, 5 cm wide and bolt it to the side walls of the profile.
  3. Attach a wooden handle to the bolt strip.
  4. Attach a plastic “tongue” to the bottom of the U-shaped profile with nails. By default, the plastic for the “tongue” should be in the form of a roll, and when snow gets on it, it should unwind.

To ensure that snow rolls off the roof onto the plastic without your help, it is enough to lift the filled shovel during the cleaning process.

To make a scraper you will need the tops of the canisters

How to make your own scraper for removing snow from the roof

I think that many of you have encountered the problem of clearing snow from your roof in winter.
Snowy and harsh winters are not uncommon in our area.

On our summer cottages there are many buildings from which it is necessary to clear snow from the roof.

One of these buildings is a greenhouse, whether a glass greenhouse or a polycarbonate greenhouse. If the snow is not removed from the roof of the greenhouse, then a large layer of snow can push through the roof under its weight. Then in the spring you will have to incur extra costs for repairing your greenhouse or other structure.

It is also recommended to remove snow from carports and the porch of the house.

To remove snow, you can climb on the roof and clear the snow (don’t forget about insurance here). Another option is to clear the snow using a snow scraper or similar tool.

Of course, you can buy a scraper in a store, but it will cost you around two to three thousand rubles, and with a telescopic handle it will cost more. You can make such a tool without problems and quickly yourself.

DIY electronics in

To make this tool we will need: a rake with a handle, a board, self-tapping screws, a thin metal strip and a screwdriver.

It is best to take a board no more than 80 centimeters in length and no more than 20 centimeters in width.

We will need to attach the rake to the board using a thin metal strip and self-tapping screws.

To secure the rake like this, I only needed four self-tapping screws (more could be used for reliability), and the rake was already tightly connected to the board.

As you can see, making such a simple tool will only take about five to ten minutes.

Now you can go and try to clear snow from the roof using this tool.

The video above showed how easily you can use this tool to clear snow from the roof of a polycarbonate greenhouse.

Snow is cleared from this roof without any problems, and this tool was also tested on a metal roof.

The only thing that could be improved for this tool is the handle.

A regular rake handle can be too short in many cases, so it makes sense to use a longer handle.

You can find other homemade scrapers on the Internet, but they will take much longer to make than this one. Source
