For Kot’s seventh birthday, I want to present my invention to the court.

The lawnmower was built over several years and has undergone many changes and improvements. Initially, the idea was to use the PDA as a control panel and BlueNiceCom IV. The touch screen slowed down the program and data packets were lost, and the communication range was too short for such an invention. Then I spent a lot of time studying the RFM01-RFM02 combination. It's finished... Well, for starters, the mechanical part: The cutting part is based on two engine cooling fan motors from a car (12v 160W) with knives from trimmers mounted on them. The speed and power of these motors turned out to be quite enough, I even tried to mow small bushes. The video shows a test of the cutting force of the motor. The knives are located at different levels with a difference of 1 cm with the intersection of the rotation area, i.e. They mow without a stripe but they don’t occur. The total swath width is 48cm. The steering is assembled on an electric drive for the car's hatch, and as it turns out, it develops quite strong traction. The chassis is a windshield wiper motor from the same car (a very old BMW) with a gearbox and a chain drive to the main axle. Drive to both wheels without differential for better cross-country ability. It really affected the turning ability. But with sufficient load on the front axle it turns quite normally. The wheels were purchased from some kind of garden wheelbarrow. Lifting the header is a trapezoid, not the best idea but easy to make. More about the shortcomings later. PS2 control panel. Well, now the electronic filling. The board with the controller was pulled out and assembled. As it turned out, the controller capacity of the Chinese remote control is somewhere around 6-8 values. I decided to completely assemble the board using PIC16f877. The capacity of the ADC is even very high for smooth control of speed and angle of rotation. The RFM02 transmitter is connected to it. All this and the lithium battery are compactly housed in the remote control body. The diagram was drawn from memory due to the habit of keeping all the diagrams in my head. There may be some glitches, but in general everything works properly. The printed circuit board in Sprint Layout 5.0 is shown at the end of the article. A few points on the controls: Raising the header - up and down buttons on the left joystick. The right joystick is the top button to turn on the knives, the bottom button is to turn off, the left button is pressed to activate the AUX channel. The two-speed drive motor also implemented this feature: on the back of the remote control there are buttons 1-2 for the first and second speed. The analog joysticks here, for convenience, have implemented three functions that are activated by clicking on them: Clicking on the left - control back and forth left and right - with the left joystick. Pressing the right one is the same as the right joystick. Pressing the left and right simultaneously - the left analog joystick is forward backward, the right joystick is left to right. As it turned out, the third mode is the most convenient only if the second hand is free. The remote control is charged from a Nokia charger. Now about the steering servo. The diagram is taken as a basis from examples of the Proteus program. Added PWM filter and op-amp for range adjustment. Video of the actuator. Well, the control unit itself. Heart PIC18f2550. A USB connector is connected for flashing via bootloader. The purpose of the LED is to indicate modes: entering the software update mode (long press of the button) is constantly lit, blinks evenly - waits for a signal from the control panel, blinks with short flashes, receives data from the remote control and the data is received correctly, constantly lights up in operating mode - Battery voltage is below 10.5 IN. In this mode, launching knives is impossible, but moving abilities are not blocked. When grass is wound around the motor axles, they stop, the voltage drops and the motors turn off. It turned out to be very convenient in practice. It is necessary to more accurately select the R2 value for setting the cut-off of knives. Launching the knives through a relay (an ordinary 40A car relay). The RFM01 receiver is connected to the controller, no comments here. The wheel drive motor is connected through a speed relay and a direction relay, as well as through a field-effect transistor for smooth speed control. Header lifting motor via LB1650 driver. I connected an alarm siren to the AUX output with a modified generator circuit to a police “quack-quack.” Field-effect transistor IRL2505, the diode next to it is double from the computer’s UPS. The remaining transistors are at your discretion based on the current of the relay winding. Sea trials. During the tests, shortcomings were revealed: - Winding of grass on the axis of the knife motors. It is necessary to install screens on the axes. — Trapezium, here everything is much more interesting: the knives themselves turned out to be far from the front axle, and when the wheel hit the hole, the knives rested on the ground. We will have to change the design of the header and move it closer to the front axle. Well, overall it turned out very well. The mowing speed is much higher than manually with a trimmer. I even tried to ride it myself, it rides in a straight line without any problems. A car battery should last more than 2 hours. You can mow a lot during this time. It doesn’t get stuck in the grass, I haven’t tried it in wet weather, and there’s no need to mow it when it’s damp. It is necessary to allow the knife motors to cool down every half hour. I plan to replace the LED with a multi-mode LED flasher.

To install the engine on a homemade lawn mower, you must follow the following tips, guided by the video:

  • Next, to protect the engine of our homemade lawn mower, we create a casing, the thickness of which should be at least 1.2 mm. We cut holes in it slightly wider than the diameter of the shaft;
  • Immediately decide at what height from the ground the engine will be located. In order to protect the electrical device from various breakdowns, it is better if there is at least 3 cm left to the ground.

To make knives we need sheet steel approximately 4 mm thick. From it we cut out a circle with a radius of 19-20 cm. It can be either larger or smaller. It all depends on how powerful the engine is. But most often, a disk of such a radius is enough for a homemade lawn mower to work well. Now you need to make a small hole in the very middle of the circle in order to thread the edge of the shaft into it. Please note that it must be flush with the disk. It would be best to weld the shaft to the circle, as seen in the photo. Despite the fact that it will be impossible to remove this structure, it will not cause any particular inconvenience. If problems arise with the engine, it is best to disassemble the device from the casing side.

To install blades on a homemade electric lawn mower, you will need to do the following:

  • Make two holes in the disk, 2 centimeters from the edge. They are necessary for installing knives. They are attached to the circle using M6 bolts;
  • Knives must be cut from a hacksaw or saw. They should be 60 mm in length and 30 mm in width;

  • The bolts must be secured in such a way that the knives can rotate freely around their axis when pressure is applied to them. This property is very useful if you find some hard object in the grass. This will protect your homemade lawn mower from frequent breakdowns.

  • Now you need to disconnect the “steering wheel” and the tire from the saw;
  • Using water pipes, attach the handle to the cart. We attach the “steering wheel” to it, which we removed from the chainsaw, extend the fuel supply hose and the “throttle” cable;
  • After this we attach the engine to the frame. Make sure that the shaft is always at the bottom;

  • To regulate the height of the grass to be trimmed, weld a piece of pipe 8 cm long and 5 cm in diameter coaxially onto the “star” from a chainsaw. Another piece of pipe 8 cm long and already 5.8 cm in diameter is placed on it with a gap.
  • The disc and blades are attached in the same way as a mower from a vacuum cleaner.

Radio controlled lawnmower

This lawn mower was made especially for a disabled person. Due to health problems, he is unable to operate a lawnmower with conventional controls, and friends decided to convert one of the lawnmowers to radio control. This device has two motors. One electric engine is for movement, the second gasoline engine is for operating the lawn mower mechanism. The master installed a generator on the device to charge the battery, and a wireless camera that transmits the image to the user’s screen. The gasoline engine is started by a remote-controlled starter. The master does not provide detailed instructions, only a general concept. Carrying out such a procedure is quite simple, the main thing is to be patient and have the following elements:

  • wheels (even suitable for an old stroller);
  • welding machine;
  • hand saw;
  • steel sheets;
  • electric motor.

A special platform should be cut out of a steel object, because it will play the role of a mounting support for the engine, whose shaft should be placed in the lower area. After installation, as in the above video, it is necessary to create a reliable protective casing for the engine.

The thickness of the “shell” should be 1.2 mm, and as for the diameter of certain holes in this protector, it should have a greater coefficient than the shaft, literally by 4 mm. The propulsion system must be marked at a distance of 3-4 cm from the ground, otherwise the part will be damaged during movement and work.

Particular attention should be paid to the metal disk that is installed on the shaft itself. Knives need to be created in several versions. To do this, the master must cut a disk from an iron sheet (the dimensional coefficient of which is 38-40 mm). It is placed on the motor end and carefully welded with a welding machine.

FROM THE WASHING MACHINE

The following items are ideal for creating a homemade mower:

The structure of the lawn mower itself cannot be called extremely complex, because it contains a reliable body, sharp blades, a powerful engine and a conveniently located control lever. Therefore, anyone can quickly create a useful lawn mower with their own hands.

An asynchronous motor would be the best option as it makes virtually no noise. The wheels should allow the knives to be at a height from the ground (5-6 cm). This feature makes the mower suitable for tall grass and uneven areas. It is advisable to install 4 wheels, since only then can maximum maneuverability and stability be guaranteed.

The metal sheet for the frame should be 30x50 cm wide, and as for the depth, in this regard it is necessary to ensure that the engine and the casing covering it do not “peek out” beyond its boundaries. In most cases, knives are made independently from steel sheets (thickness 2–3 mm and width 20–50 mm).

FROM CHAINSAW FRIENDSHIP

This type of chainsaw has the necessary level of power, so it will be an excellent basis for a future garden assistant. To create you will need:

Having taken the engine out of a good old, but no longer needed, chainsaw, it is important to simply install it in a mobile cart without changing anything in the mechanism. And you can create a cart of the specified plan using 25x25 corners with dimensions of 500 mm and 600 mm. They must then be joined by a frame-shaped welding machine.

The angle grinder needs to be carefully mounted on top, making sure that the enclosing casing on the tool itself is securely fastened. Since the working shaft of the angle grinder is quite short, a nut with an elongated thread should be screwed onto it. Now you can attach the knife to it. Naturally, such a unit is suitable for cutting short grass, which is why making a homemade mower from an angle grinder is quite simple.

What does it consist of?

To make a lawn mower with your own hands you will not need many things:

  • metal sheet 2–4 mm thick,
  • tool steel knives,

A 180 W motor, taken with a starting relay and a capacitor from a simple washing machine, or a Soviet-style one, is quite suitable - its heaviness will come in handy here. It is better if the motor is asynchronous - it makes less noise. The wheels need to be selected (or made with your own hands from plywood and bearings) so that the knives are at a height of 5–6 cm from the ground - this will be the height of mowing the grass. The number of wheels depends on the wishes of the owner: 4 - guarantees stability and the same height of the grass, 3 (with 1 wheel installed in the rear of the frame) - the same, but more economical, 2 - ensures mobility and maneuverability, the ability to work at different angles. A two-wheeled machine will be easier to navigate among bushes, trees, or some decorative elements installed on the lawn.

The metal sheet for the frame should be approximately 30 by 50 cm; usually the width of the frame is made at least 30–50 cm, and the depth is such that the engine and the casing that covers it do not protrude beyond its boundaries. Knives are usually made by hand from mild steel 2–3 mm thick and 20–50 mm wide; the steel should not be brittle; a hacksaw blade for wood will work well. The cutting edge should be slightly curved downwards, this will protect the motor shaft from winding up the grass. The handle can be made by bending the water pipe so that it is comfortable to hold it without bending over. The handle is welded to the frame of the lawn mower; there must be a place on it for winding the cable.

How to make your own mechanical lawn mower?


Mechanical mowers are noise-free, do not require a power source and can operate in any weather conditions.
But you can fully enjoy all these features after purchasing a factory-made object, because with home-made objects you need to try a lot. Despite the simplicity of the mechanism, it is quite difficult to create a mechanical device with your own hands. After all, the main problem is the impossibility of choosing knives, wheel and gear sizes the first time without experience.

The mower includes two types of blades: one rotates and collects grass, and the other remains stationary and cuts elongated vegetation. For full operation of the mechanism, a sufficient speed of rotation of the knives is required, which is formed using the transmission movement from gears and wheels.


Problem: how to make sure that the grass is cut using the principle of scissors? Since the working width, drum size and number of cutting elements are completely interrelated, the solution to the above problem has a mathematical direction.

This needs to be sorted out. The diameter of the drum is determined by the size of the wheels and the diameter of the gear installed on one of them. If the wheels are mounted on one axle, then the radius of the drum will be less than the radius of the wheel. If you analyze everything, you can create conditions for methodically touching the cutting edges, between which there is grass. It is important to understand that the knives must have a special curved shape that allows for continuous cutting of the grass.

Summer is the time to carry out gardening work, and simply to tidy up your own plot. In order for it to have a well-groomed appearance, it is periodically necessary to take measures against the growth of grass, which not only spoils the appearance, but also interferes with work on the site.

Alternatively, you can manually weed the grass, or you can trim it using a lawn mower. This method is good because we get a neat, well-groomed area just tens of minutes after we start cutting the grass. Making a lawn mower with your own hands from a vacuum cleaner is no more difficult than from other household devices that have a fairly strong motor.

Which engine to choose

The type of power unit directly depends on the area planned for processing and its relief. As a rule, home craftsmen do not go through the options and use any motor that is available in electrical engineering or household equipment. The following options are suitable for a DIY lawn mower:

  • trimmer motor;
  • vacuum cleaner;

A gasoline power unit from a chainsaw will also serve as an excellent basis. The most optimal motor is an asynchronous type, capable of producing more than 3000 revolutions per minute. In order to assemble a homemade lawn mower from a vacuum cleaner, you will need a welding machine, some sheet steel, an old baby stroller, and an unnecessary saw or hacksaw.

All you need from a baby stroller is a chassis that is a good size for making a lawn mower with your own hands from a vacuum cleaner. Large wheels move well over uneven soil and grass without getting stuck. Therefore, you can trim off all excess, or leave the handles (depending on the stroller itself) that we will hold on to when cutting the grass. The lawn mower is made for the convenience of working on the site, therefore the handles for it can be made separately by adjusting your height.

Using the same sheet steel and corners, we create a platform for installing the engine, on which we place the vacuum cleaner engine. We do this in such a way that its shaft is directed downward towards the ground. To protect it, a casing 1.2 mm thick is cut out, in which a hole is cut with a diameter 4 mm larger than the diameter of the shaft. We adjust the engine installation height by determining the distance from the end of the shaft to the ground. It is not recommended to leave it less than 2-3 centimeters to avoid damage to the device.

Then a disk with a diameter of 38-40 centimeters is cut out of steel 3-4 mm thick. The disk can be made either larger or smaller - this takes into account the force that needs to be applied to it to spin it. Accordingly, a more powerful motor can be used with a larger disk. But since it is most convenient to make a lawn mower from a vacuum cleaner using a disk of exactly this size, it is better to take advantage of the experience of people who have been creating such units for many years. A hole is drilled in the center of the disk into which the end of the motor shaft is threaded. It must be flush with the plane of the disk, after which they must be welded to each other. The disk will not be removable, and in the event of an engine malfunction, it will be disassembled from the casing side, so there will be no difficulties in disassembling the lawn mower from the vacuum cleaner.


At a distance of 2 centimeters from the edges of the disk, we cut two holes for the knives. Their size should have been sufficient to subsequently secure the knives with two M6 bolts. Knives are cut from a blade from a saw or hacksaw. Their length should be 6 cm, width - 3 cm. The bolts are secured so that the knives can rotate along their axis when pressure is applied to them. This will be useful if you hit a stone or other hard object in the grass - when it encounters it, the knife will simply turn to a different position and will not break. In principle, they will have to be changed periodically in any case, but at least they will not be used up every time the grass is cut.

All that remains is to make a button or switch lever by running a wire from a standard toggle switch to the motor, and you can use the new lawn mower. It is quite suitable for a small amount of work around the house, and will help you make good use of an old vacuum cleaner that was previously standing idle. I would also like to note that nowadays you can make a lawn mower from a chainsaw.
