Owners of private houses and summer cottages are constantly faced with the need to remove rust. It covers metal parts of fences, garden tools, and household utensils with a brown coating. This is not surprising, because due to the proximity of the land to outbuildings, the air in them is especially humid. If metal objects in your home or country house have begun to rust, then it’s time to get down to business and remove these red stains from the surface.

We will need

You can, of course, get by only with hand tools, but we will still list everything that will significantly facilitate the work process and speed up the restoration of the ax. A hand-held metal brush, grinder, grinder, sandpaper, and mechanical jigsaw will come in handy. As well as a sharpening machine, calipers, a vice, a hammer, a wood file, a pencil and a ruler.

There are several things you definitely can’t do without. These include a wooden beam at least 50 cm in length. You also need a block to make a wedge. Two small metal plates. You will need glue, rags, and water-repellent agents.

The working process

First, you should make sure that the ax does not have through cracks or chips. However, if the blade is covered in rust, it will need to be cleaned first. It is best to start removing rust with a hand-held wire brush. The blade must be secured. In this way, only the top, loosest layer of corrosion can be removed. Subsequently, you can use an angle grinder. To speed up the process, it is recommended to hold the ax at an angle. Rust must be removed from all sides and bends. Cleaning is completed using a belt sander and abrasive belt, as well as the use of hand sandpaper.

Once the rust is cleaned, you can polish the ax using a felt wheel previously placed on the shaft of the sharpening machine. This operation is purely aesthetic.

Now you need to make an ax handle. Here we need a suitable block of wood. It is best to choose hardwoods: oak, ash, birch, maple. We mark the future block with a pencil and begin cutting. The easiest way to do this is with a mechanical jigsaw. When the blank is ready, the inner contour of the ax is marked and sawed out in the same way, after which there will be a long and painstaking work - using a wood file. The work should be completed with a grinding machine.

Cutting a groove for a wedge using a jigsaw is the most important part of working on an ax handle. After this, with powerful movements and blows we place the blade on the handle. On the entrance side you need to have a reserve of up to 1 cm of ax handle. All that remains is to make and drive a wedge of hard wood. Before hammering, it is better to apply glue to it to ensure additional reliability. Stabilization of the ax is completed by installing two metal plates at an angle into the middle part of the wedge. Now you can treat the ax handle with a water-repellent agent.

I have sharpened more than one ax in my life - I can probably do it even with my eyes closed. Looking back, I can sum up intermediate results and share my experience.

Today I will tell you how to sharpen an ax to a sharp blade in 5 minutes.

Why is this a problem

Some people may wonder why it is necessary to deal with rust. Indeed, this is not always a serious problem. Yes, for a screwdriver and an open-end wrench this will not be a problem, because they have no moving parts at all. But for an adjustable wrench and other tools that have moving parts, rust can ruin everything. Due to the unpleasant coating of oxidation, the tool loses its properties, so it needs to be dealt with.

Sharpening the ax

Five minutes and it will be like a straight razor

Without delving into the details, when sharpening an ax you need to know the following:

  • When sharpening an ax mechanically, you must not overheat it.
  • When treating with abrasives, you need to lubricate their surface
  • Finishing is done by polishing the cutting edge of the tool

Professional pneumatic angle grinder with a set of high-quality discs

To sharpen the ax I use a grinder with a flap wheel. The latter differ from each other, sometimes significantly - there is a dependence: price and quality. One of the main differences is the property of not heating the metal during processing.

However, the price of such a consumable is very high, so having budget flap discs at your disposal, you need to monitor the heating of the tool being sharpened and periodically cool it with water.

Checking the sharpening result

There is no need to repeat so as not to return to step No. 1

After polishing, the ax blade acquires a mirror shine - this is an indicator. However, we need to check it in practice - cut the metal rivet. As can be seen in Figure 9, it did not resist - it was cut in half and at the same time practically did not jam.
